Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anybody remember when AH wasn't tabloid central with "shock" headlines and absolutely no substance?

    http://amyalkon.mensnewsdaily.com/2012/08/09/man-goes-to-jail-for-collecting-rainwater-on-his-own-property/
...Harrington was found guilty two weeks ago of breaking a 1925 law for having, what state water managers called "three illegal reservoirs" on his property. He was convicted of nine misdemeanors, sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined over $1500 for collecting rainwater and snow runoff on his property.

he was convicted for diverting a waterway to fill his own pond.He was warned a few times before he got charged and convicted.

There was a thread about it in the CT forum recently.

EDIT:cant find the thread so possibly was brought up in a thread about something else

It's not quite as outrageous as claimed by some heavily ideological media outlets.

    This from a regional paper:
    http://tdn.com/news/state-and-regional/oregon/jackson-county-man-sentenced-for-water-diversion/article_1cd023ef-011f-5ca1-a25a-4f7241cb1c2b.html
A Jackson County man has been sentenced for illegal water diversion and ordered to breach dams

The Oregonian ( http://is.gd/4cgQcP) reports Gary Harrington had a 10-year history of illegally divert water with homemade dams. He has also been sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $1,500.

State Water Resources Department officials say Harrington has three dams across channels that cross his property outside of Medford and feed into Big Butte Creek. The creek is a tributary of the Rogue River.

Two of the dams stand about 10 feet high and the third is about 20 feet tall. Harrington stocked the reservoirs that formed behind the dams with trout and bluegill, built boat docks and used the ponds for fishing.

It is illegal to divert and store waters of the state without a permit.

    http://is.gd/4cgQcP
State officials estimated 40 acre-feet of water collected behind the dams, enough to fill nearly 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Officials are uncertain whether Harrington built the dams himself, ordered their construction, or if they were on the property when he bought it. At any rate, it is illegal to divert and store waters of the state without a permit.

How is this even a story?

When can I expect a knock on the door from Phil Hogan then to tell me to stop collecting rainwater in a barrel then???????

I know what I will use the barrell for "big phil".;):D

i am not sure this is a good example of a bad law.

Under Oregon law, all water is publicly owned since 1909. They have to manage water more effectively in Oregon. If Harrington had a natural spring that did not flow off his property he could use that as it for his pond. You can collect rainwater.

The same law exists in Ireland where you can not divert flowing water.

I just checked my own link.

And I thought this was a wind up. It's not.:pac:

How is this not the main story here?

calling it a POND is very subvertive..

    it was 50 million litres!

thats a huge ammount and totally liable to dick with local aggriculture, wildlife and water supplies

Ah jaysus when I first read it I was a bit shocked. I thought he had a small bottle with a funnel to collect rainwater that he used to boil the kettle or something. But 50 million litres? Of course he deserves to go to jail!!

Going to jail voluntarily but changing your mind when you discover jail is hard, like Floyd Mayweather.

Just for scale here, if I've done the sums right, 50 million litres is 200 swimming pools 2m deep, 5m wide and 25m long. Yep, that is a big pond all right :eek::eek::eek:

    or 250m x 100m x 2m deep
