When my friend shipped her prefab house into this country from Germany they had to do escort duty themselves from Rosslare to the site at 5 miles per hour in front of the all the lorries as they arrived.

somehow I dont think your friends prefab would of been attacked by crusties or the other blow ins causing the hassle.

    harsh much?

Probably a bit flippant alright, but I've absolutely no time for the shell to sea protests, or the percentage of locals up there who have ever put a tick beside the Flynn name on a ballot card

Its all well and good having a laugh at Shell's misfortune... Every cent they spend getting the gas out will be less money paid to the state for any gas extracted...
Every delay caused by shell to sea, every extra security guard they employed, all reduce the payback to the state as it can all be offset as a "cost of extraction" of the gas..

In many people's opinion we struck a poor enough deal for returns from the gas in the first place but the NIMBY crowd are just helping shell avoid more and more payments...

    Typical modern Irish attitude..

We don't want the gas extracted without making a big fuss...
    We don't want wind turbines..
We don't want overhead power lines..
    Incinerators... no thanks
Farmers spreading slurry on their own land, no thanks that's smelly
Don't want to pay teachers, nurses and guards their salaries but complain when standards fall..

Damn it... what do people want, to be back in the 1800's digging crusty spuds out of their gardens !

    From the article...
There were scuffles with guards and people’s clothes were torn. One woman had her trousers torn off.

    :pac:

I need a video of this!

I know plenty of people who could lift that.

They can claim back expenses against tax on profits down the line anyway, so either way we pay.

Wouldn't matter if Shel do pay the cops, they are divirted away from other duties
I dislike the thought of private enterprise paying the Gardaí to do security even more than I would dislike the bill coming out of the taxpayer's pocket. Do they have their full garda super powers when engaged privately or do they become common or garden security?
They more than likely have to have proper gardai to escort this thing across the country. It's probably a legal requirement. Therefore, this is their duty.

They don't even need one capable of lifting 160 tonne.

Shell to Sea and the truth are mutually exclusive.

id be more worried about the fact that becuase of past corrupt goverments, the country will lose out on hunderds of billions of euro from said oil and gas.

    The million dollar question.
Who the hell planned the route and how did they forsee narrow roads as not a problem?

The deal struck was sound. There was no guarantee that it was financially viable to extract the gas when the deal was done. The deal was no different to similar deals done in similar areas

The West coast of Ireland is not the North Sea, hence the odds were far higher of making a viable find then in the likes of the North Sea and the value of the deal reflected this

As an aside, I'm not defending FF, I have absolutely no time for them, but in this case I can't criticise

Yeah that trailer looks like it has 8 axles.

Max weight per axle is 10 tonnes - and that includes the weight of the trailer. max weight for a 4 axle bogie is 24 tonnes - so the load may only be 40 tonnes http://www.rsa.ie/Documents/Vehicle%20Std%20Leg/Vehicle%20regs/Weights_Dimensions_Leaflet.pdf

[edit] has more rear axles and the front of the trailer is resting on the tractor unit - so weighs more [/edit]

yes permits may allow heavier loads, but there would have been bridges and culverts en route

Or instead of a crane do like they did at the mines - use a large bucket excavator to lift up it up a bit.

[edit]Mr Hynes confirmed the weight of the lorry and its load was about 170 tonnes[/quote] - tractor, trailer , load - still plenty of mobile/crawler cranes that can handle that

How many Gardai are used in this transport?
That appears to be serious overkill.

If you didn't have a big camp of foreign crusties threatening to incite violence and vandalism, the Garda presence wouldn't be necessary.

Don't complain about the Gardai, complain about the scumbags - they're the reason the Gardai are there.

In any case, I actually can't see any Gardai in the main image on the site...

Not complaining about the Gardai. In the video that is on the site - there is four out riders, 2 cars, a horse unit and Shell's own security van. That seems a lot for a road-trip to Mayo. What are the horses for?

Not just foreign crusties - there are plenty of local crusties as well. Galway appears almost empty without them.
