Coin Dealers in Dublin

I did find a site that showed some of the 2002 euros for sale, they varied from 600 to 2'000 euro, majority were German and a few very rare ones, no other Irish ones apart from the one I have, I dont know where you take it to get it verified as no one seems to know what they really are

yeah there was only 13,000 minted in 1959 but they were minted the same coins all through the 1960s with the same date 1959 so it has very little collectors value, but going by the gold in it its worth betwenn €550 and €600 depending on the day and gold is a bit swingy at the moment but its swinging more down than up

that it weights 15.3g doesnt sound right, your scales might be out so you should get it checked

believe it or not i have 2 10p coins and i know where 19 of the 21 unaccounted 20p coins are and they will probably be going to auction soon

Hi Philomena, your Krugerrand is currently the best type of investment, being 22carat Gold and weighing 1 Troy Ounce, that's 33.93grams @ 91.67% gold.
You should be able to get €1100 – €1130 from a decent local dealer or keep it for the RDS coin fair later in the year. I buy a few each year but in £ Sterling and the exchange rate would nullify any small profit I could make on the deal.
Good luck if you sell but my advise is keep it if you can, Gold will rise to $2000 an ounce before the World Economies start to seriously grow again.

Hello all,

I would like to ask for some advice regarding possible value of two coins in particular.

1931 (Very Fine) old Irish shilling

1978 (Uncirculated condition) "Cupro-Nickle" old Irish Two Pence piece (this seems to have been some type of anomaly at the mint)

I know very little about coins and am trying to help my Dad with this inquiry, if anyone knows where I can take them, dealers in Dublin etc or any info from resident experts here on the forum would be most welcome.

Here's the current values depending on condition,

Obviously these are retail prices, expect a dealer to offer 2/3 leaving a 1/3 profit margin.
Try Gumtree Dublin Coins for sale but be realistic with expectations and send in 2 good pics.
The Catalogue of Irish Coin Prices ref to by Judgement day is a fair reference but is out of date with 2012 Market Values.

Yes I know, they have a habit of making it extremely difficult to find. Sometimes I wonder do they even want people to show up at these events. It's on at the same time as Stampa October 12-14, same entrance:

Yes, the coin section would be quite big, though perhaps not as big as the Feb fairs.

LB, I have bought and sold at this Fair, Feb one is the best. It is worthwhile for a new collector to familiarise with Dealer Prices/Values but you can do this on the Internet. If you are looking to buy you will pay top price, better to deal through Internet/Phone where you can bid/Offer a percentage. The show is really an outlet for dealers to shift coins they have been stuck with for Months/Years which are currently depreciating, they should be prepared to lower their prices but as they have paid for table space the price is kept inflated. The October show will have 85% same coins which were on show in Feb.
If you are selling coins the dealer is likely to offer between 50% and 65% of the current market value, for silver coins 70% of the silver bullion value but it's worth getting a few quotes, weigh silver accurately let's say 100gm, deduct % not silver, get Daily rate per Gram from Internet eg 65cents/gm.....100gm of 75%silver@.65pg=€48.75 expect a dealer to offer approx €30-€36 for that quantity.
Rare coins should be sold individually at the regular coin auctions, usually 4 or 5 each year, rather than offered to a dealer who will make the bulk of the profit.

Todays silver bullion buy price is 73c per gram, I have used 65cpg as an example only.

I was wondering. The €20 gold proof Ploughman coin from the Central Bank is selling for €55. It is a gram of gold which is worth about €42 at current prices. What are peoples views on this coin as a potential investment?

Hi, I am looking for advice about getting a coin valued. It is a US $5 gold coin from 1912 (Indian Head) in what appears to be very good condition. I did find it on ebay going from $600 all the way to > $13k, which makes it pretty hard to figure it out. Any suggestions about where or who to talk to?

That's probably because a coin's value is all about it's condition, the amount of wear etc. You'll have to compare it with one of the same grading that actually sold. Never mind what prices people put on them, you have to look at what they actually sell for. Also keep in mind there may be different varieties of that same year coin with certain ones being rarer than another, also different mint marks.

You'd be better off posting your question on a specialised forum for American coins making sure you post large clear photos of both sides. There's no point asking for the value of a coin like that if you don't post photos.

You could also bring it along to the next coin fair at the RDS which will be sometime in the middle of next month. This will be the largest coin fair of the year in Ireland and there'll be quite a few international dealers including Americans. But I wouldn't trust any one individual dealer without doing my own research first!

I have a 1 cent euro coin that is the same colour as a 10 and 20 cent coin. Presume its not worth anything but does anyone know if this is part of a set or is it in circulation as i haven't seen one around before and cant see it on any pictures of it online. It is a German Coin from 2002. Thanks.

Sound like an error coin. If you could post a picture of it sitting beside a normal 1c and a 10c coin, we'd get a better idea of what it is.

Thanks for the photo. Unfortunately I can't tell by looking at it as the top coin is heavily toned so the other 1c just looks like one that hasn't toned much. When these coins are new and uncirculated they are very shiny and I'm wondering might that be confusing you? I think I'd really need to see it in hand to determine if it's got a golden colour as opposed to a very shiny copper colour. Hard to tell from here sorry! But keep it aside anyway as you could be right.

I think that it's a Moroccan 2 or 4 falus. The symbol in your first picture is the seal of Solomon. The Islamic date of 1288 converts to 1871 in the Gregorian calendar.

I can't find any logical explanation to classify this as a 'mint error'. It might well have been the case that the original die was worn at the last digit and or it might have been a weak strike at that spot, in which case the coin even as new might have had a particularly weak last digit to begin with. With natural wear and tear (which this coin has had plenty of) the remainder of the digit might well have worn away. It wouldn't have been that unusual to see a weak image on parts of a coin like that. I really can't think of any other explanation other than someone having had a go at it...

I'm looking to get a coin collection that was left to me valued with the option of selling. I'm looking for input from three posters in particular on this thread. There's over 1,000 in total, mostly Irish and English. Here's a few photos. The one's in the brown bags are only a small selection as there are between 50 and 60 of these in total.

Dave you won't get a proper valuation on this thread if that's what you're thinking? A proper valuation would involve inspecting each and every coin either in hand or by much clearer pictures than you have provided. As there's over 1,000 of them it's not practical to do that here and no one will inspect them in person and give you a valuation unless there's a good chance of them buying them at a low price. It's too time consuming for anyone to give you an accurate free valuation.

Your only options are to bring them to a few different dealers and let them make you an offer on the lot. There'll be a coin fair on in Feb, that might be a good place to start. Another option would be to list them all on ebay in separate lots with clear photos, this way you'll get top prices but it's also very time consuming. Or you could put them into a normal auction like the Dublin coin auction which I think the next one will be due around the same time as the coin fair.

Andrew is dead sound but so are a few of the other dealers you could talk to at the coin fair. But as experienced dealers they'll be fair with you but won't give you the kind of money you could get selling them on ebay. Also keep in mind that while you do have some nice sets in your collection, you also have a lot of what a collector or dealer would call "junk", coins that are plentiful and not in demand. Dealers might not want to touch these at all. You could always dispose of junk on the likes of Adverts in lots.
