Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

New MacGuyver - Female Lead

Long, long way off but maybe.
It’s 2015, and women have made some great strides. Running for president, going into space, busting ghosts, looking at porn, even taking the lead role in a whopping 15 percent of movies. Yes, equality is nearly upon us, but there’s one last frontier women have yet to cross: being MacGyver.

Yes, MacGyver. The smartest, best-mulleted action hero of the late ’80s, whose eponymous TV show has been looked back on with a mixture of affection and ridicule ever since. Well, the National Academy of Engineering, USC, and something called The MacGyver Foundation have decided our televisions have been MacGyver-free for too long. Those organizations are coming together to launch a new show, with a female MacGyver, and the only missing piece is you. And probably a paper clip. MacGyver always needs a paper clip.

A new web site, thenextmacgyver.com, is asking the general public for ideas for what would be, “the first great show starring an iconic female engineer character.” (Clearly, someone’s forgetting a little show called Chip & Dale’s Rescue Rangers). Five winners will receive a princely $5000 and the chance to partner with a Hollywood producer to develop a pilot based on their script. No word as to where or how this show will air, but Ms. MacGyver can probably use some tinfoil, your old flip phone, and a Pringles can to build a transmitter that will just beam the show onto people’s TVs.

I thought that was just me! For the last 20 odd years!

Stop trying to rewrite my childhood for **** sake! MacGuyver always was and always will be Richard Dean Anderson. There is no need for a female reboot.

No, just no !!!!! it's like when they remade anne last year and cast her as a black orphan, I'm as big a race/gender equality supporter as you can find but....... no , just no

Casting a white person for the role of a non-Caucasian character = whitewashing and insulting.

Non Caucasian/Woman getting role of a white Caucasian male = Progressive

I look forward to seeing Ms. MacGuyver defeating ISIS with a tampon, hairclip, lipstick and her copy of Cosmo.

Stop ****ting on the 80's FFS. What's next? All girl A Team with Queen Latifah as BA Baracus?

I assume this is some sarcastic attempt at summarising recent events but it's actually true.

Although, maybe there's an issue where hollywood/tv producers feel like they need to base a female led movie/show around an existing property to guarantee and box office/tv ratings boost.

Its serious. I've seen recent outrage at whitewashing but people lauding the decision to potentiall be cast Idris Elba as James Bond. Its adapted from source material. I just don't get it.

So you don't think the latter is progressive at all? And you were being sarcastic?

Oh sorry. Misspoke. I was, of course, being sarcastic.

Can they not just create compelling female characters from scratch? Seemed to be possible in the 90s. Xena, Buffy etc.

Suppose it won't be long before you see Harriet Potter.

Remember Veronica Mars? What a fantastic show. Surely there are more original ideas out there for female leads.

I wonder would RDA be interested in it? Could be good having him in some kind of mentor/father capacity.

    MacGuyvers first name was Angus.
That is the least cool name ever.
    /thread.

    Why would it bomb/fail?

Throwing fuel on the fire here but having watched episodes of the classic series on Netflix... it really hasn't aged well. At all. In fact it's a fairly poor show nostalgia has kept intact by way of cultural nods such as The Simpsons

A female McGuyver? Cool, whatever. Playing the outraged nostalgia junky gets tiring so I say let's see what they come up with first. We live in a world where the Battlestar Galactica reboot happened so retooling a cheesy, forgettable show with little mythological value can work with the right attitude and approach.

That said, odds are it'll be some throwaway procedural drama like everything else on TV anyway, so when it gets canned after two seasons all that angst will have been for nought ;)

April 17th seems to be the cut-off point @ thenextmacgyver.com

Although it'll bomb in the US, seems a female engineering lead will do better in China or Asia.

Count me in too. Watched them all a few years ago (6 or 7 years now) and most of it was really enjoyable.

The Murdock episodes always being a particular highlight :)

Addison Timlin has been cast as the female lead opposite Lucas Till in CBS’ drama pilot
The pilot, co-written by Paul Downs Colaizzo and Brett Mahoney and directed by David Von Ancken, features twentysomething Angus MacGyver (Till),

I take it that 'Angie' MacGyver is no longer , there's something's you don't mess with!

Although i hear a MacGyver Film In the Works From Lionsgate :)
