Oke, suir is my local river fish it around holycross and thurles, river is in good order despite all the rain it was well down to later summer levels and even lower and this rain has just kicked off the mayfly, seems to be alot more on our stretch this year with trout taking an interest in the duns coming off around mid afternoon, the river isn't that high considering the rain, let us know how you get on golden is a lovely stretch

    Premier

any particular patterns good for the mayfly?

Most of the typical irish lough mayfly patterns will work although i tend to fish smaller and more olive coloured flies, it tends to be the freshly emerged duns and in warm wet conditions,

here is a patterns i use alot

Just back from fishing around Cashel. Lots of Mayfly around and a lot of trout rising. Caught a few over the 1lb mark - good trip. Met a couple of locals who reckoned the mayfly would be around for another week or so.

Good stuff Oke, glad you had a good trip, sounds like you did well! It's great to see the mayfly coming back as they were in decline the last few years, the suir in general is turning a corner I feel, never seen so many salmon up the upper river this winter, long may it continue! Any flies in particular doing damage? Weekend looks colder but I'll try and get out...

I was using a mayfly I bought in Cashel - never really fished mayfly before so I've no hometied flies. Size 12, pheasant tail - tail, cream dubbed body with a gold wire rib, looked like a mix of dun and light olive shoulder hackle .

Plenty of these around and a good few bigger:

I am pleased to hear of your success.
My observations over the last few years have indicated a severe drop in the ammount of Brown trout on the Suir.
Wether its by weather fluctuations, pollution, predation, whatever, they are not by any means prolific.
Strangely as the salmon increased the trout decreased. Although in the past it appears thatv there were plenty of Both.
I would ask that people only take what they really need as they take years to mature and breed.

There was plenty of trout around yesterday. Though I agree about taking trout - the permit I bought said the bag limit was 6 trout! This is crazy, if the clubs put in place large catch and release stretches then this would be a world class trout fishery. None of my trout were kept by the way.

I agree a bag limit of 6 is still OTT my clubs limit was 12 up to 2 years ago.
Some keep the lot, the excuse is "for the cat" ( never knew a cat like trout)
Certainly not a problem taking a few if needed. Especially when one has paid for a day ticket because they are not cheap.
I think the Trout may have moved upstream towards Golden to escape pollution further downstream?
    Golden is a lovelly stretch.

6 would be the limit on my stretch too over 10 inches, it seems excessive, in saying that most of the members I know would practice catch and release, regarding numbers I've seen no real change in trout numbers although the river seems to be getting lower and lower in water level past two years especially, always surprises me how intensively places are fished but still produce 2lb-3lb fish in some places. Suir trout are smart!
