Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. It's made by Matrix who made the DS versions of FF3, 4 the underated four heroes of light and the ipad game which is really good. They know how to make a good FF game.

Remember all the fanboy whining that SMT IV didn't have Shoji Meguro as the composer? What a load of guff that was especially when you hear how good the soundtrack is:

Just started another go at FFX on PS2. Never quite finished it the first time. Wanted a change from GTA, COD, and Minecraft.

Yes it's brutal :o If I could mute it altogether and keep it text-based like the older ones I would!

The voice acting is grand, there's real talent in the cast. The problem is the script, it's hard to act well with such bad writing.

I am loving the music in it, probably my favourite thing about it.

I never thought of it like that. Tidus sounded pretty stupid a lot of the time...that could easily have been the voice actor doing the best he could with such a cheesy script.

    Fair point ;)

When you have people like Tara Strong on your cast struggling with lines then there's something wrong with your script. I can't even blame the localisers for it either. If you look at the japanese voice acting it's quite poor as well, the infamous laughing scene in particular is even worse in japanese! At least it's not all bad, there's a lot of moments when it works but I'd probably chalk them up to good localisation work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭carbonkid

I looked up Tara Strong on IMDB...yea it must be the scripts lol. Hard to believe the laughing scene could be worse!

He had nothing to do with it. Ghibli designed the graphics and joe hisashi did the soundtrack but everything else is by level 5 and it shows. The story is the worst thing they have done and the gameplay is dull.

Tidus is the main problem, Yuna to a lesser extent.

I tohught Seymour, Auron, Wakka, Lulu were all very good.

    Auron especially.

I don't want Nolan North or Troy Baker to voice every leading man but Tidus VA was a little bit too pre-pubescient.

I'm not sure thats the word I'd use!

I played it, admit it is very good and I thought the story was okay in the end (although it took an absolute age for the payoff).

But major plot developements felt few and far between.

The battle system was decent for me. The boss battles were a satisfying challenge but the whole familar concept seemed overblown to me - there was no real incentive to use familars earned later on in the game, they just took too long to level up to the level of your originals.

Again it's not the voice actors fault. It's hard to play a character not as a whiny pre-pubescent teen when he is written as a whiny pre-pubescent teen like Tidus. There's only so much an actor can do with crappy lines.

Just look at the two voice actors that played Tidus (James Aernold Taylor) and Yuna (Hedy Burress) and look at their other roles. They've got some really great parts on their CV.

I'll put it another way, Hedy Burress was the same voice actress that put in a stunning performance as Rosie in Valkyria Chronicles.

Playing a few JRPGS myself at the moment the first list are the ones who I've yet to beat

FF10 = stuck on the third seymour fight but still I really love this game.
FF9 = I can get as far as necron before being wiped out. Trying to beat Ozma first because my logic if I managed to beat both Ozma and hades I can beat necron easily.
FF13 and FF13-2 have to replay them again because my freaking brother ended up accidentally corrupted my ps3 save files. have to redo them again at a certain point.
Xenoblade chronicles: it just keeps going on when you think you've reached the end it just continues at the mechon capital city at the moment though.
Persona 3 FES: I am stuck at the boss battle against the three tables after the mid term exams that is.
Kingdom hearts 3D: The boss battles are too difficult early on and I don't like the design of the enemies and the bosses as apart from the one boss fight in Tron they don't look menacing.
chrono trigger: was playing on an emulator reached lavos but my computer got a virus and I have to replay it all again but this time I'll likely download it once it comes out on wii u store.
JRPGames I am replaying at the moment then
FF7 because I want to rename all my characters funny name.
FF6 I played the GBA version on an emulator and used a bunch of cheat codes to win till it got hit by the virus. Playing the originally named FF3 version instead.

Not sure if you could call it a JRPG in the purest sense but I've been really enjoying One Way Heroics on PC. Really super roguelike/RPG that looks like a cheap RPG Maker game at first but has a ton of depth underneath, love it.

Really recommend you grab it off Steam, only €3.

Started playing demon gaze over the weekend. Seems good so far and a good bit easier than Etrian Odyssey. I might beat this first and then go back to EOIV once I've gotten to grips with the genre a bit more.

currently playing Legend of legaia! i need to see the ending again ehe

Last one I've played was Tales of Vesperia last year, picked it up cheap for like €7 from Xbox Live's marketplace discounted sales.

    Decent game, but I burned myself out playing it completely from maxing out cooking on all characters.... it takes like 36 battles per character per food item! Too fecking tedious >_<;

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,506 ✭✭✭✭Xenji

Finished up playing Freedom Wars over the weekend, not the greatest story, but the combat system and the graphics are top notch, it will be a must have for people when they release a localised version, looking forward to getting Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed next week.

Etrian odyssey is very different to other RPGs. You go into the dungeon explore until resources run out then get out of there with a warp wire. Rinse, repeat and hope to get a little further each time. There's no way you'll get through a stratum on your first go.

I know, its the planning of characters I find intimidating. I never had a problem with the exploration aspect of EO.

The best thing to do is min max. Pick a role for your character and stick to it. If you do that it's hard to screw up. If you have a character that can specialise in two different weapons then only focus on one or else one type of magic. It's hard to screw up a character really.

You can always respec characters and the later games are a lot better about this, EO 1 had a 10 level penalty to do that. I'm playing EO 2 with a very unorthodox team and even though it feels like I'm making it hard on myself it balances out.

However I can get if you feel apprehensive about the skill tree. It takes ages to get skill points and its stressful thinking you could mess things up. I kind of like that about the game.

I find EO is actually one of the more streamlined and user friendly of the dungeon crawlers, more of an entry point than others ive played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,897 ✭✭✭megaten

Yeah its always skill tree's that trip me up. I feel like I should be planning skills for whatever's coming next not what I have to deal with at the moment.

In every case it's best to min max. Have a role for your character and specialise in it. If you try to become a jack of all trades then you won't excel in any. It's good in a way since you might have a defender but you can make a lot of different defenders that all play differently. You can branch off later but anything you have will just be a tiny bit of support. Never try to adapt to the situation. Skill tree progress is so slow in EO that it's just not worth it. Stick to the plan unless you think that any changes you make will have a long term benefit.

For instance for me having healing skills on my defender seemed like a good idea at the start but they quickly became useless by the third stratum since my healer was dealing with it all and MP consumption was the real issue.

Also EO like Megaten is stat buff heavy!

Been playing FFXIV:ARR online for the past 3 months and I'm hooked. It's looks unbelievably beautiful on the PS4. Visually, it's easily the most beautiful game I've known too. I can't get to play it as much as I'd like unfortunately. I just got my first job white mage recently. :)

I've spend a few weeks playing Breath of Fire II on the Wii U VC. Nevermind that I've been following a gameFAQS to help me almost every step of the way I've been enjoying it a lot. Only things are I might not have been following the gameFAQS quite well enough because I had needed to employ various characters from around the game world in Town Ship in order to get better weapons and armour. Might have to start the game which isn't really a bad thing I think.

Most annoying thing is unlike the first Breath of Fire, there is no Mrbl3's, meaning no items to keep the monsters away if you don't want to be bombarded with random battles. Places where I would find it particularly useful would be in boss caves where you have to travel a few miles to return to the safety of civilization after a difficult boss battle. Particularly egregious example is in the Whale Cave, and the journey to and fro fighting Munmar. My party was already somewhat devasted just trying to get to the boss, and I think I had only one party member alive with no means of reviving my chums. No surprise I was wiped out before I could leave the whale cave. Ironically just getting ourselves killed was probably the fastest way to leave. At least I didn't have to do the boss battle again when I restarted at the save point.

Suikoden II LOVE! I like the battle system and the added interactivity for massive battles.

GF wants to play xenogears, she heard it incorporates Nietzsche. Think she may be disappointed.

I really want to play chrono trigger again.
