Ultegra 6700 shifter problems

    Hi,

    my left hand ultegra 6700 shifter has a problem after only 5ish months. When changing to the big ring or halfway across small ring the shifter doesn't spring back, it just stays out and has to be pushed back in, which is VERY annoying. anyone know what to do ? Thanks

    Have you tried opening the clamp at the dérailleur end to discount a cable issue.

    Yeah, was my first thought, but unfortunately not. When I take the cable out and just move the shifter it still gets stuck. Thanks though!

    There are lots of mechanical parts in there so a squirt or 2 of lube oil would not do any harm. Dont use WD40 though as its not really a lubricant, something along the lines of 3 in 1 oil is much better. Personally I use a penetrating oil spray with PTFE additives but I am not sure where you can get that (I work in an engineering business)

    What's the cable run like ? My focus goes through the frame and gets stuck usually after lots of cold weather rides

    @macnab Thanks, will certainly try now!
    @ednwireland it's not the cable unfortunately, the shifter doesn't spring back into place like normal, it just stays there, even without a cable. I put on an old 7900 lever and it's working okay, so definitely not the cable run. It is internal and very new.

    Agree with everything above.

    3 in 1 do a "high performance lubricant with PTFE" (in a spraycan like WD40) and it is very good. They also do a lithium grease in a spray can which is brilliant if used very sparingly.

    I think I got them in Aldi.

    I work as a bicycle mechanlc and we are seeing this problem a lot with the newer ultegra , spray oil may help in some cases but I think you have a release spring problem , I would bring bike back to where you purchased it as at only 5 months old all parts will still b under warranty
    Shimano all ready know there is a problem with these levers so the normally replace with out any fuss

    I have an old school 7 speed rsx sti shifter that wasn't down shifting but is ok now after a wd40 soak. However, supposedly it's not good to leave without lubrication and supposedly spray lithium grease is a recommended substitute when the grease is washed out. Looked for it in halfords without success. Do you remember when you got yours in aldi?

    I can't remember to be honest( about 2 or 3 months I think).

    You should try someplace that sells bearings etc or an old fashioned "motor factors" cos they generally have a better selection of specialist type parts, lubricants etc.
    What would probably work also would be something like "Finish Line Dry Lubricant" that you will get in your LBS.

    I read an article on repairing these shifters and and spray lithium grease was the one to put in. Thought you might have picked it up recently! I was in a motor factors the other day and forgot all about it. I'll look the next time.

    I wouldn't be keen on spraying anything in there, that generation of shimano shifters are by far there worst offering in years, take out cable check if it's still sticking, if it is, it may not be an easy fix, generally with the 6700 unless you use quality cables and replace outer you are going to have poor shift quality
