This thread has been set up to alleviate the excessive amount of news stories - or more specifically, on new shows still in development or in early casting stages.

These threads, while they are appreciated, don't tend to invoke a whole lot of discussion in the forum.

We'd ask that any news on shows still in development (whether it's casting stages, pre-production or filming) be posted here.

Ideally, we would ask that a show should have at least have an air-date and / or footage before it's warranted to be be posted for discussion / it's own thread.

 this could be the new Rome!!!!!!!

Synopsis : Pharaoh will be set in Ancient Egypt, during the XVIIIth Dynasty (Akhenaten, Nefertiti, Tutankhamun). Season 1 takes place in 1500 BC. Egypt was ruled by a king whose mission was to make sure the harmony between humans and gods remained strong. When he died, instability and uncertaintly began to emerge among the people. The fight for power raged between two pharaohs : the young Thutmosis III, who will ultimately become one of the greatest egyptian conquerors, and his stepmother, Queen Hatchepsut, one of the most influential women of all Egypt. Thieves, soldiers, priests, scribes and servants will all be a part of History and affect it through alliances, betrayals and manipulation.

    - It will be shot in english.
    - Canal+ won't have to assume the gigantic cost of the show alone : italian and middle-eastern broadcasters recently joined and will finance the project as well.
    - John Milius (writer of Dirty Harry, Apocalypse Now, Conan the Barbarian and creator of HBO's Rome) and Daniel Knauf (creator and showrunner of HBO's Carnivàle) started working on the show in March 2011.
    - John Milius will be the showrunner of Pharaoh. He wrote the first draft of the pilot. Daniel Knauf wrote the second draft of the pilot and he wrote the second episode as well (the second draft of episode 1.02 was completed last month).
    - On July 28, Daniel Knauf met with french writers and intents to hire some in the staff.
    - Pharoah will be shot in 3D, this is the first series ever to be shot with this technology.
    - The show will be shot on location in Morocco. Pre-production is already undergo and a french production team is working with a moroccan team to establish usable locations over there.
    - Pharoah will feature a lot of sex, violence, romance and drama and will premiere on Canal+ in 2013

"Marco Polo" is Fusco's fantastical martial arts epic, chronicling the famous adventurer's early years in the court of Kublai Khan. Acting as the ruler's spy, ambassador and explorer, Marco treks across the Far East and returns with tales of his journeys. In a court filled with political betrayal and forbidden relationships, Marco must use his martial arts training to survive, but it is his ability to enchant Khan with imaginative tales of his kingdom that is often his best tool to stay alive.

I'm basically pulling out pilots i *think* will go to series and posting updates. Just based on general buzz, twitter and industry blurb, so The Selection i one i think has a shot along with The Carrie Diaries.

    Castings news etc.

The Selection. Ethan Peck, is set to star opposite Aimee Teegarden in the project, which draws parallels to The Hunger Games. Based on the upcoming series of books by Kiera Cass, The Selection is described as an epic romance set 300 years in the future. Written by Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain and directed by Mark Piznarski, it centers on America Singer (Teegarden), a poor young woman who is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to marry Prince Maxon (Peck) and become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads. Maxon has an unusual run-in with potential bride America and is impressed and intrigued with her honesty and moxie. Peck’s credits include feature In Time, a regular role on ABC Family’s 10 Things I Hate About You and an arc on the CW’s Gossip Girl.

Nothing to do with the 1984 movie :)

    http://www.digitalspy.ie/ustv/news/a368919/pillars-of-the-earth-follow-up-labyrinth-to-air-on-channel-4.html

Labyrinth is based on a novel by Kate Mosse and intertwines stories from the present day and the Crusades, as two heroines from the different periods have to work together to stop a 4,000-year-old secret from being unveiled.

John Hurt, Harry Potter's Tom Felton and Gossip Girl star Sebastian Stan will appear in the drama alongside Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown-Findlay, Great Expectations actress Vanessa Kirby, Janet Suzman and Threesome and Game of Thrones actor Emun Elliott.

Merlin's Katie McGrath, who will also appear in Labyrinth, previously told Digital Spy that the show has a sense of "gritty realism" with "blood, guts and gore".

Channel 4's Tim Highsted said: "We are delighted to build on the success of last year's The Pillars of the Earth and to continue to work with [production company] Tandem. These epic historical dramas combine compelling storytelling, top-notch casting and excellent production values."

    http://www.tvline.com/2012/03/keri-russell-the-americans/

Keri Russell has landed the female lead in FX’s The Americans, an hour-long drama pilot from Joe Weisberg (Falling Skies) and Graham Yost (Justified).
The ambitious project is set in the early ’80s and centers on two KGB spies, Phillip and Elizabeth (Russell), posing as married Americans in suburban Washington, DC. Despite their arranged union, the couple’s bond grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War. Complicating their relationship further is Phillip’s growing sense of affinity for America’s values and way of life and the couple’s two children, who know nothing about their parents’ true identity.
Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) is directing the pilot.

The fact it is on FX it stands a better chance and I hope they pick a good actor as the male co-lead

[VIOLET LANGTON LILY] 19 to 20. A sparkling-eyed, virginal beauty, she's the wealthy, aristocratic daughter of Edwin and Elizabeth. The Lilys have been the reigning family of New York's elite for decades, but a recent family scandal has undermined their fortunes, both financially and societally. Now Violet, Edwin's "perfect" daughter, is expected to help redress her family's problems with a stellar liaison to the Carnegie clan. But during her latest trans-Atlantic
crossing, Violet has fallen head-over-heels for John Kidd, a low-born ship's servant who is the man of her dreams -- and the stuff of her blue-blooded family's worst nightmare. But whether Violet can acknowledge her secret love before she is trapped in a thankless marriage of convenience remains to be seen...SERIES REGULAR

[JOHN KIDD] 20 to 25, with the hint of an Irish or Scottish accent. He's a charismatic, sexy and adventurous individual of Scottish descent who has a romantic soul and a first class intellect, as evidenced by his ability to speak several languages fluently. In fact, John seems the stuff of any woman's dream, and that includes beautiful society heiress, Violet Lily, whom John meets on a trans-Atlantic crossing. However, the fact that John is a low-born ship's servant puts him
completely out of Violet's exalted league, but their intense shipboard connection has floored them both with its intensity. Because of a past (perhaps dark) mysterious secret, John has not left his ship for five years -- but his desire to see Violet again sends him on a dangerous mission into the streets of New York in search of his lady love -- a mission that could land him in very hot water indeed...SERIES REGULAR

[EDWIN FALTERHAUS LILY] Late 40s to early 50s. He's a serious, tidy, "socially ungifted man" who has been left in control of the bulk of the family fortune, much to the dissatisfaction of his playboy brother, Julius. Very much in love with his wife, Elizabeth, Edwin is trying to recoup the family's fortune and restore the Lilys' good name in the wake of a huge family scandal. To that end, he's devoted the bulk of his time, effort and cash to opening the Lillian, the most lavish hotel
in 1895 New York. He has enlisted the support of Andrew Carnegie in his new endeavor -- a partnership cemented by the impending engagement of Edwin's daughter, Violet, with Andrew's nephew, Charlie. However, Edwin does not yet know that his "perfect" daughter has fallen in love with a lowly ship's servant. And when his hotel's grand opening meets with unexpected disaster, he's left in a social limbo between success and disgrace...SERIES REGULAR

[ELIZABETH LANGTON LILY] Mid 40s. Edwin's beautiful, beloved wife, she's an intelligent, strong-willed
woman who is very much her husband's partner and equal. Elizabeth rose from the upper middle class to the social elite "with hidden claws," marrying Edwin against the objections of his dowager mother, Caroline.
She is as anxious to restore the family's wealth and position as her husband, and to that end, she pressures
Elizabeth to accept an alliance with the Carnegies. Seemingly above reproach, Elizabeth seems to be
carrying on a secret affair with a mysterious lover... or is it another secret entirely...? SERIES REGULAR

[JULIUS ASHFORD LILY] Late 30s to early 40s. He's a charming, handsome society playboy, the apple of
his dowager mother's eye and the bane of his serious minded brother Edwin's existence. Gifted with
exquisite taste and a hearty sexual appetite, he is notorious for his womanizing exploits among New York
demimonde's, circa 1895. Miffed because his father willed Edwin the lion's share of the Lily estate, Julius
has been enlisted to decorate Edwin's new hotel, the Lillian, but his lavish overspending has gotten on
Edwin's last nerve. When Edwin announces that he's taking Andrew Carnegie on as a partner and is pushing Julius out, Julius responds by planning an even more lavish hotel -- an announcement he makes, embarrassingly, at Edwin's grand opening...SERIES REGULAR

[CHARLIE CARNEGIE] Late 20s. Violet's childhood friend, he's the nephew of wealthy millionaire, Andrew
Carnegie, who has just entered a partnership with Edwin -- a merger cemented by the supposition that Charlie will marry Violet. Tall, dashing, self-aware (circa 1895) and somewhat shy, Charlie is a pleasant surprise for Violet -- but she is still too smitten with the forbidden John to give Charlie her full attention, much
    less her love...SERIES REGULAR

[ABIGAIL PERKINS] 19 to 20. This freshly attractive girl is Violet's devoted personal maid, who has been
raised with Violet and considers her more a friend than an employee. However, lately, Abigail is beginning to
feel the vast social divide that separates her from her wealthy mistress. Taken with John herself, Abigail will
be torn between an old and deep loyalty to her lady and her own quest for happiness... SERIES REGULAR

[JASPER KRAVETZ] Early 20s. A sharp-tongued trouble-maker, he's Julius's valet, who is thrilled when he
gets a job as a hotel footman at the lavish new Lillian. As he explains to his friend, Abigail, "being the slave to a hundred different men will be far more interesting than being knicker-picker-upper for the same damn one." However, when Julius pressures his return to his old duties, the resentful Jasper just may retaliate by agreeing to sell family secrets to the highest bidder...SERIES REGULAR

Lennie James has signed up for a role in ABC's pilot Gotham.
The drama, which comes from The River's showrunner Michael Green, focuses on a female detective who stumbles across a magical world that exists within New York City while investigating an "impossible murder".
James has now landed the role of Gabriel Riga in the project, Deadline says.
Gabriel, who is described as rich and charismatic, is a CEO running for the position of New York City Mayor.
He will be joined in Gotham by newcomer Megan Ketch, who has already signed up for the lead role of Annie in the project.

Lennie James is always a welcome addition to any show but not too sure on the premise of this show tbh

Gary Cole has fashioned himself a plum role in the ABC drama pilot Scruples.
Scruples — based on Judith Krantz’ novel and executive produced by Natalie Portman — follows Billy Winthrop (played by Claire Forlani), a rich and powerful clothing designer working in a business dominated by sex, revenge and scandal. Cole will play the the manipulative, longtime lawyer of Billy’s late husband.
The Vow director Michael Sucsy will helm the pilot, which also features Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), Boris Kodjoe (Undercovers) and Karine Vanasse (Pan Am).

I think Karine Vanasse would be better as the lead character

I hate comments like that. We haven't seen so much as a teaser trailer yet all ready you are criticising the shows casting. Obviously Forlani suits the role far better than Vanasse, otherwise the casting director, the shows producers, director and executives at ABC wouldn't have signed her for the part.

New Canadian series on the way, nothing to do with the movie :)

Entertainment One has teamed with NYPD Blue co-creator Steven Bochco for his next straight-to-series drama project, Evolution. Created and written by Bochco and Bryan Law and to be produced by eOne in association with Steven Bochco Prods., Evolution is set 3 million years in the future where Social Darwinism is born once more. A discovery by a tribe of Homo sapiens is about to change the world — a Box that offers the whole of human knowledge has been unearthed and the meekest of the group, The Boy, is first to interpret its lessons. Bochco will executive produce with eOne’s John Morayniss and Michael Rosenberg, with Law will serving as supervising producer.

HBO and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are in early talks to acquire the Berlin Noir novel series by Philip Kerr. The plan is to develop this as a series that focuses on the police detective character Bernie Gunther in 1930s Germany, with the political climate and run-up to WWII and then the Cold War as the backdrop. Deal isn’t done yet, but I’m told that it will close. Numerous studios and producers pursued the property as a feature, but the author decided to go for a prestige series. He’s gone through enough development hell on the feature front on past books and HBO can point to enough successes like Game of Thrones to show the merits of an episodic adaptation of novels with storylines that span around 20 years.

Could be really good if the dialogue and actors are German, I can't watch people speaking english with an accent pretending to be other nationalities anymore. (look at the likes of At The Gates and Valkyrie versus Downfall and Lives of Others for realism).

    http://www.cinemablend.com/television/HBO-Picks-Up-Woody-Harrelson-Matthew-McConaughey-Series-True-Detective-42029.html
Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey project True Detective has found its cable home. HBO is finalizing the deal to pick up the project with a straight-to-series order following a bidding war between the cable networks. Two big names like these were bound to spark a lot of interest.
Earlier in the month, the project set to star best friends Harrelson and McConaughey was announced and prepared to pitch to the cable networks. It generated plenty of interest and it looks like HBO has come up on top according to Deadline; the deal is nearly done with an eight-episode first season order.
True Detective is about two detectives (Harrelson and McConaughey) who investigate an over fifteen-year-old murder. The format will move back and forth between testimony from the present day investigation and what happened in 1995, when the murder occurred. Each season will follow this same structure, but will feature a new story. Harrelson and McConaughey will be on board for the first season, and a new set of stars will take over should the series get renewed.
The series already has two episodes and a bible written, and also has Cary Fukunaga signed on to direct. It seems writer Nic Pizzolato has signed an overall deal with HBO, and this series is part of the package, so we should be hearing more from him soon.

McConaughey best work (besides taking his shirt off :p) is in the legal/crime films so this should be good

When pilots begin staffing it basically means they are unofficially picked up, also staffing are NBC comedies The New Normal and Save Me. Go On already has a series order.
ABC's Mistresses and NBC's Hannibal also have series order but they were ordered straight to series without pilots.

Starz And Michael Bay Take To The High Seas For New Original Series "Black Sails"

Eight-Episode Season One Commitment for Pirate Adventure Tales of Captain Flint

Starz to Retain All Domestic and International Rights Including TV, Home Video, and Digital

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., May 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Starz Chief Executive Officer Chris Albrecht announced the straight-to-series greenlight of "Black Sails" (working title) from executive producer Michael Bay. The new STARZ Original series is expected to air in 2014. The eight-episode first season of the pirate adventure centers on the tales of Captain Flint and his men, and takes place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island."

Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

"Starz is excited to be working with a visionary like Michael,'" said Albrecht. "Along with the high-octane action that is a hallmark of a Michael Bay production, it has the elements that Starz originals are striving to bring to the premium landscape: epic, larger than life, cinematic storytelling. The series is also a property we believe will appeal to the global content marketplace with broadcasters around the world."

"I'm excited to branch out into television," says Michael Bay, the record-breaking director/producer of such big screen hits as Transformers and Bad Boys, "especially doing a long-form series for STARZ, a network known for supporting cutting edge programming."

Following the model of the "Spartacus" franchise and "Magic City," Starz will retain all domestic and international rights to the dramatic series, including television, home video, and digital.

"Black Sails" will be executive produced by Michael Bay (Transformers, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form [producers on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Nightmare on Elm Street (2009)]. The series is created by showrunner and executive producer Jon Steinberg (creator "Jericho," "Human Target") and co-executive producer Robert Levine ("Touch").

The production is set to shoot at Cape Town Studios in Cape Town, South Africa later this year.

    Series is-a-go :)

    http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/directv-orders-rogue-tv-drama-summer-2013/

DIRECTV announced today that it has ordered ten episodes of an original suspense-drama, ROGUE, starring award-winning actress Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible 2, Crash) from leading independent studio Entertainment One Television (eOne) and Greenroom Entertainment. ROGUE marks DIRECTV’s first foray into commissioning an original drama series exclusively for its customers. Production is slated to begin in August 2012 and the series will premiere next summer 2013 on DIRECTV’s Audience Network.

ROGUE revolves around a morally and emotionally conflicted cop, Grace (Newton), who is tormented by the possibility that her own actions contributed to her son’s death. Series Is from Award-winning Creator of “Luther,” Neil Cross, and Acclaimed Film Producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black,” “The Ring”)

NEW YORK CITY -- May 14, 2012 -- From the award-winning creator of “Luther,” Neil Cross, and successful producing team of Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black,” “The Ring”) comes an extraordinary action-adventure series “Crossbones” -- with an unexpected moral center where one can't be sure whether the pirates or the British crown are the villains.

Ten episodes of “Crossbones” have been ordered and production will begin in the fall.

The announcement was made today by Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

It’s 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise, this is a place like no other on earth – and a mounting threat to international commerce.

To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the pirates’ haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But The Closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple. Lowe can’t help but admire the political ideals of Blackbeard, whose thirst for knowledge knows no bounds – and no law. But Lowe is not the only danger to Blackbeard’s rule. He is a man with many villainous rivals and one great weakness – a passionately driven woman whom he cannot deny.

Parkes and MacDonald serve as executive producers. Cross will write and also executive-produce the series. Ted Gold (“Three Rivers”) also is an executive producer. The series will be produced by Parkes/MacDonald Productions; Georgeville Television (GVTV), Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital's new TV Studio; and Universal Television.

Reelz Channel in the US has picked up Shaw Media's Bomb Girls and World Without End. Showcase in Canada will air World Without End while Global has already aired Bomb Girls....which was renewed for a second season.

That looks like it will be as disappointing as the Pillars mini-series. The best part of the book was about the black death which seems almost absent from the trailer.

I loved Pillars of the Earth

I do remember complaints from the book readers though

Maybe the book readers have different expectations and are being a bit harsh in their judgements?

Ken Follets's book are huge, of course there have to be major cuts and editing for a TV adaptation

There wasn't major cuts, there was a whole load of new crap with magic dreams and the like, a weird distortion of King Stephen and a fantasy version of Empress Matilda, neither of whom were major characters in the book, which was about how ordinary people suffered during The Anarchy, not about the major players in it. Follet's books are realistic period books, they don't have magic or prophetic dreams. The mini-series was seriously over the top and laced with really sub-standard fantasy elements.

    http://www.deadline.com/2012/06/hbo-orders-charles-randolph-cold-war-spy-drama-pilot-aaron-paul-in-talks-to-star/

HBO has given a pilot order to Cold War spy drama The Missionary. Emmy-winning Breaking Bad co-star Aaron Paul is in talks for the lead in the project, from film/TV writer Charles Randolph (The Interpreter) and producer Stephen Levinson as well as best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell and frequent Levinson collaborator Mark Wahlberg.

Set in Berlin in the late 1960s, The Missionary, written by Randolph, centers on a young American missionary (Paul) who becomes involved with the CIA. Randolph and New Yorker writer Gladwell, who are friends, had been working on an idea for a spy project when they met with Levinson and Wahlberg, who also had been looking to do a spy drama. The four joined forces and last fall took the project to HBO, where Levinson and Wahlberg have produced four series: Boardwalk Empire, Entourage, In Treatment and How To Make It In America. Randolph, Levinson, Gladwell and Wahlberg executive produce The Missionary, which HBO is producing in association with Levinson’s Leverage and Wahlberg’s Closest to the Hole Prods. The Missionary is the second Cold War-era cable spy drama pilot ordered this year, along with FX’s The Americans, about undercover KGB spies in the U.S. played by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. At HBO, it joins another period drama, Prohibition mob series Boardwalk Empire, also executive produced by Levinson and Wahlberg.

The Missionary would mark Paul’s followup to his breakout role opposite Bryan Cranston on the dark AMC drama Breaking Bad, which has earned him three Emmy nominations and a win. The series will end its run with a two-part, 16-episode fifth season that premieres July 15. Missionary also would mark Paul’s return to HBO, where he recurred on Big Love. On the big screen, the UTA-repped actor starred in this year’s Sundance entry Smashed.

another marvelous write up richard ;), i always look forward to your opinion on these lovely thread you create:D,

i love that aaron paul is getting some recognition, and now being trusted to lead a show, its could be very strange seeing him in a role outside of breaking bad, but i suppose i said the same about cranston after malcolm in the middle,

i dont mind that there going back to the 60s but i would have loved to see HBO take on a show like this but have it based in the present,

I think Jane Fonda has aged better than the Barbarella idea.
