Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There's a notice on www.leinsterchess.com about these competitions, with a deadline for entry of Friday 25th.

We might use this thread for posting results once they're under way.

In news that will be met with mixed responses, the Branagan (and indeed the other cups) will not be FIDE rated this year.

Unfortunately, they should have been registered even before I was told I would be running them. If I'd known, I could have registered them immediately and postponed the first round by a week, but I only learned they hadn't been registered on the weekend.

    Bray 4 - 2 Inchicore

Bit of a surprise. Was it a full strength Bray team?

I know from last year that Heidenfeld teams aren't expected to get 2 points from top half Armstrong teams. :)

No, not full strength; their expected score was about 4.3 or so.

They had one 2000, three 1800's and two 1600's.

    Phibsboro 6-0 Rathmines
It seems Rathmines fielded only 5 players due to a late withdrawal and also had a very weak team.

I finally have all of the round 1 results (or at least one team's report of them).
    Group A
    Phibsboro 1 6
    Elm Mount 1 4
    Dun Laoghaire 1 2
    Rathmines 1 0

    Group B
    Gonzaga 2 7.5
    Celbridge 1 3
    Balbriggan 1 1.5

    Group C
    Bray/Greystones 1 4
    Inchicore 1 2
    St Benildus 0 0

    St Benildus 2½-3½ Bray/Greystones

Had winning positions in the two we lost apparently. But then maybe should have lost one of the ones we drew.

Upshot is that Inchicore are mathematically out of it, and we need to beat Inchicore 5½-½ to top the group, though 5-1 may be enough for the best runner-up spot.

Yep. In the position below (I've had to estimate the move number), White rejected 25.Ne8+
    25...Kg8 26.Qg7#
    25...Kh7 26.Qg7#
    25...Kh6 26.Qh8+ Kg5 27.h4+ Kg4 28.Nf6#
The line that bothered him was
25...Kf8 26.Qxe6 Rb7. I think he underestimated his chances here, but he was down to a few minutes and thought this other line was safer. The game continued:
    25.Nd7+ Kg8 26.Nxb8 Rxb8 27.Qxc5 Rc8 28.Qg5 Rxc2+ 29.Rxc2 Qxc2+ 30.Kg1 Qxd3 31.Qd8+ Kg7 32.Qf6+ and white settled for perpetual check. I don't think he has anything more, and time was a factor by now.

    @cdeb
re 'Upshot is that Inchicore are mathematically out of it' - think your sums are off, should Inchicore take you out 6-0 (a possibility you may not have considered) then they top the group
    @mikhail
pls clarify 'best runner-up spot' - eg am guessing results v last team in group A discounted like the soccer qualifiers, next tiebreak?

You're right actually, yep! Good spot.

Group A's runner-up's results against the bottom team are discounted for the best runner-up tie-break. Not sure what separates teams after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,862 ✭✭✭mikhail

Given my own club might be in that situation, I should clarify it in advance. I don't see provision for it in the existing rules (where tie-breaks assume the two teams have met, which isn't the case here), so I'll have to make something up.

For simplicity, I propose that in the event of a tie for best runner up, the results of the board 6s on each team will be discarded. If there remains a tie, the board 5s results are discarded, etc. Finally, if we are still unable to separate the teams, a coin toss or die roll or other appropriate random event will break the tie. Naturally, this would take place with an independent witness.

If Inchicore 6-0 they overtake Bray..

    Benildus 4-2 Inchicore.

So I guess the best runner-up won't be us. We need Celbridge to score 3 or less against Balbriggan while Balbriggan score 4½ or less in the same game and - assuming Rathmines end up bottom of group A - we need Elm Mount to win that group, and then Phibsboro to score 3½ or less and Dún Laoghaire to score 4 or less in their match against each other. If any of those teams scores a half point more, we're into tie-breaks, and I've no idea how we stand there.

All plausible individually. But you'd imagine one of the teams is going to pip us somewhere.

Dún Laoghaire v Phibsboro was played on Wednesday actually; any score? Celbridge v Balbriggan is on Saturday and Elm Mount v Rathmines is on on Monday.

    I believe Phibsboro won 4.5 to 1.5.

I think that means runner-up in group A will have either 7 or 7.5 points.

Phibsboro beat Dún Laoghaire 4½-1½, so we're out.

Elm Mount beat Bray 4.5 to 1.5.

    Gonzaga won the other semi-final.

Elm Mount beat Gonzaga 3.5 to 2.5 to win the Branagan Cup last night for the 4th year in a row.

The match was played in Elm Mount's home venue in Drumcondra.

The Branagan's been rated. Let me know if there are any mistakes: I was dumb enough not to think about rating reporting beforehand, so wound up having to write the entire file by hand, which is more prone to error.
