I don't know if still true, but in late 1990s the Antanov Cargo planes commercial serivces were run from Shannon and to prevent Russian "mafia" interfering either the Airframe or engines were owned by an "Irish" company. Even during Cold War the Russians built an oil terminal and refuelled Russian flights to / from Cuba.

So not totally unlikely that they take notice of us.

Also Internet does not equal to Broadband. How many European Statistics from Ireland are much worse because Irish agencies dishonestly include Mobile & Satellite and Irish Broadband WiMax (the version with no fixed outdoor aerial) as Broadband?

Rte ran an article the yesterday.
    http://www.rte.ie/news/business/2013/1218/493621-ireland-still-below-eu-average-on-broadband-access/

Note that it says that Comreg are happy that the average speeds are increasing, even though this has no effect on the percentage that cannot get any service or those doomed to 3G and satellite. There must've been a huge jump, all UPC 100mbit customers went to 200mbit, fudging the figures even more

The average speed is only increasing for those already on Urban & Suburban broadband, largely due to UPC. Though eircom's competition Fibre to cabinet (largely only UPC competition and only of value < 900m from cabinet) will drive up average speed. Comreg have nothing to be happy with.

Our broadband here has increased by about 0.5mbps download and there has been a decrease in upload too, that's since about 2010 when Eircom finally offered us a fixed line.

A refreshing change to read that nearly 1 in 5 in Ireland can't access the internet (rather than reading the usual obfuscatory waffle we get here).
