any way to train a 1 year old jack russell from running out the gate after people? she doesn't bite but just barks at passers by and follows them a fwe yards. some people think its funny cos she is tiny but others find it annoying and they've every right to be. i use a lead now sometimes until i get a gate up but was wondering if i can train her not to. every time i catch her doing it i put her on the lead hoping she might learn but no cigar;)

There are 'radio dog fences' http://www.britishdog.net/gbu0-catshow/Dog_Fence.html?gclid=CJnmpI-mrZkCFUiT3wodeTDYJw
you set up this fence and put the special collar on the dog and its gives the dog a static shock if it passes thru' it . This sounds cruel but its not.

the next door neighbour used to have one of them, thought they were a bit cruel but maybe not. cruel to be kind?

Well its for training purposes. The dog will learn not to leave (unless you let him)

Get a gate asap don't waste money on the radio fences by the time you've paid for one it'd cost the same or more than a bog standard gate. If any good at DIY you can even just buy some fence panels and make one yourself.

Either way a gate is the only long term safe option.

an old Barbara "walkies!!" Woodhouse 'trick'. Get someone to walk passed carrying a jug of water, when the dog runs out, throw the water all over the dog ...

not much use if you want the dog to be a guard dog, but y'know ...

    Gate is a good idea!

You could always just wait till you see the dog do this then give it a good thrashing with a stick or if you are feeling a bit weak wristed just a rolled up newspaper. really show that dog whos boss and that you are in charge and she must obey you.

    (^^huge dollop of sarcasm there)

Don't get a radio fence they are cruel and don't work well, the dog could just learn to associate the shock with strangers and then be worse off than before. Try socialise the dog better to people she doesn't know, reward her for being friendly to strangers and just take the time to get her used to people calling around. in the meantime get a gate, till you get a gate don't leave her out there off leash. it is only making a bad problem worse and its not fair on the people either
