Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Yes.

I'd strap a saddle to my Labrador and use a mop handle as a lance.

I was reading about a veteran of WWI who dug latrines for the duration of the conflict....

    War isn't all front-line Infantry.

    If someone invaded our country?

    Yes.

    Circumstance would dictate everything.

Fight for the freedom of my country, sure. In a heartbeat.

Go to war for a government agenda (oil) under the guise of freeing the people? Not so much.

One look at my age and medical record, instant "4-F" or whatever the local equivalent is. Besides, war these days is a job for professional soldiers and high technology, not massed armies of bodies barely able to march and fire a rifle.

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

We are at war. It's just different from the previous ones. And the answer is yes.

I could give aid but I couldn't kill anyone. I'd rather kill myself than kill anyone. I couldn't live with it.

Nah I'm a conscientious objector unless it's a war for Jennifer Lawrences Cnut, sure the whole world has seen it but only I get to lay it down at night.

I know of our people's history. The desperate rebellions against a foreign power and being the disciplined backbone of that same power. The ability to soldier is engrained with the generations of Irish people, even if certain elements of this feckless generation of keyboard warriors are more comfortable being enrolled in the PC Brigades.

I'd say I could. I can shoot, I'm reasonably fit and I can follow commands. Who are we fighting and do I need to bring my own rifle and boots :)

I can't do either of those, and I've been in two wars.

Soldiering is as much a thinking man's game, now.

Different story for those who were conscripted in both world wars or any American male born in the late 40s and early 50s who came of age and had their number come up in the draft for Vietnam. When you've no choice it must be hell, the military know's most just aren't suited to that life, it's a vocation more than anything.

The rebellion against foreign power is relatively new; for the most part the 'rebellious' people were trying to impose a Catholic monarch, be he English, Scottish, French or Spanish. The most enduring aspect of the Irish 'soldiers' was their inability to unite as one...far too much in-fighting and rivalry.
As recently witnessed, the Irish are easily divided... an old tactic.

If the circumstances were right, then absolutely.

I think I'd be good at it too, but then again I do love a good lie in and I'm partial to diarrhea so there's that...

Judging by how I managed the fitness boot camp, I'd be the one walking 100ft in front of everyone else to look for booby traps and snipers.
They might even give me a uniform. No chance of getting a gun anyway.

Perhaps new 'owners' would be a good thing at this stage
