Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I persuaded my sister in law to get the starter pack for my brother but its sold out. Will they be back in stock soon? I told her to go for the 70euro one instead. Any discount codes to get me on the good side :)

Boards.ie used to be a discount code, you could try it.

Gentlemen, I am hoping you can help me. My husband has asked for a decent razor/shaving set for Christmas. He has a heavy beard and dry skin. At present he is he uses a Mack 3 razor and NO7 shaving gel and normally ends up with nicks and cuts.

I have no idea what to get. I had a look on shaving.ie and saw this

    http://www.shaving.ie/products/merkur-34c-hd-safety-razor.html

I also had a look at this

    http://www.shaving.ie/products/muhle-rytmo-4-piece-fibre-safety-razor-set-ash.html

Few questions does he need the brush if he used a shaving gel like No7 or should he use something else??

Max budget would be €100. Any advice welcome

First thing, when he ask for a decent set did he have a safety razor in mind?
Because safety razors are different from cartridge razors like the Gillette Mach3. Safety razors will have a small learning curve. This video explains it a bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufG1dPmVo8Q&list=PL2DB6D82F52BA7608&index=6

If he did have a safety razor in mind and your budget is 100 euro then I recommend building your own set
The Merkur 34c would be a good razor to go with.
If he wants to stick with his gel then he doesn't need a brush but, if you want to get him one of the better creams or soaps from shaving .ie then you need to get him a brush too, I recommend this one http://www.shaving.ie/products/black-silvertip-special-iii.html
I'd recommend a cream like one from Taylors of Old Bond street. This one is nice, http://www.shaving.ie/products/taylor-of-old-bond-st-grapefruit-shaving-cream-bowl.html
You'll need the blades so, get a blade sampler,http://www.shaving.ie/products/50-blade-premium-selection-sampler.html
You could top it off with a good aftershave.
I'd also recommend getting a Styptic Pencil just incase, http://www.shaving.ie/products/styptic-pencil.html

I'm thinking about putting in my first order with shaving.ie.

I picked up a cheap brush and Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn cream to give it a try, and now obviously I want a better brush, ha.

Are the Silvertip Special brushes on the website worth it? And are the three of them pretty much the same brush with a different handle design?

Also, what's the difference between an Alum block/stick and a styptic pencil?

Thank you so much Uncle Sam,

I am not sure if he is thinking of a safety razor to be honest I am not sure if he really knows much about them or in fact any kind of razor. He used to use a Dry Electric Shaver for years and moved to the Mack type ones a few years ago as he felt the Dry Electric Shaver was tugging his beard and making his face very sore. He is now very unhappy with the Mack type and just said he wanted a good shaving set for Christmas. He beard is very heavy.

What other options do I have?

I love the stuff and I don't say that lightly considering I'm a big fan of Proraso. I read once that someone said Mitchell's was tricky to work into a lather, well I find the opposite, I face lather it and it's always been excellent to lather within a minute or two.

They all have the same hair specs, just in a different handle. They look to be decent value. I had a very quick look online and I can't find another 22mm silvertip brush for a similar price.

A safety razor sounds ideal for him but, just make him aware that he has to go at it differently then he is use to with the Mach3. When I get home tonight I'll link a good beginners video on shaving with a safety razor.

Alum is great for small weepers. Styptic is when you get a bad cut. I've never needed to use my styptic pencil but they're cheap and handy to have just in case. My alum block has been used a lot.

Michaels can be tricky to lather for people living in hard water area's. If you like MWF then take a look at Tikibar shaving soaps. Her soaps are the same only with a lot of great smells.

Regarding the brushed.. It entirely depends on what you are looking for/at. Yes there is a difference in the different kinds.

Alum blocks I find are best for sealing pores whetted the styptic pencil is for dealing with "nicks. I use the Alum block as a matter of course following every shave. I find it seals the pores and ultimately to a better finish. I love used styptic pencil years ago to seal a nick

My wife bought me one of these for Xmas, along with several smaller items such as shaving brush, lavender shaving cream, styptic pen and bloc d'alun.

Very nice razor to be honest - well crafted, nice weight. I've never used a safety razor before, and have only ever used Mach 3 / Fusion style cartridge blades.

I was a bit apprehensive about using the single blade - was afraid that i'd maul my face with the safety razor. However, I found it easy to use (the Muhle kinda assists you in placing the blade at the right angle for a pass, with the curve on the top), and only had some minor cuts at the end (which the styptic stopped instantly).

Have to say also, i find that this razor gives a very close shave. I used it first xmas day, with about 4 weeks worth of growth on my face, and it took all off, absolutely no problem (obviously the razor needed quite a lot of flushing!)

If I didn't already own the R2 ATT razor then the 37c HD (39c just has a different haddle) slant would be my choice. It's suppose to give some excellent close shaves.

So I got my merkur 34c and a mix of 50 blades from shaving.ie

I'm just wondering what's the best order to try these blades out?

With my own research, this is my best guess:

    1) personna platinum
    2) bic chrome platinum
    3) polsilver super iridium
    4) Gillette 7'oc yellow
    5) Timor
    6) Astra
    7) Feather

Anything I'm mixing up badly there? Thanks

That blade order would work for me.
The Bics never worked we'll for me whereas the Personna range I'd recommend as a good starter blade.
    Any questions, holler!

Yeah first time. The Merkur 34c seems to be recommended for beginners, so plumped for that.

I've been using brush, Proraso pre-shave, soap and aftershave balm with the mach3 up to now.

Cormacjones don't worry about blade sampling just now. Concentrate on your technique. There's no point sampling if your technique is varying from shave to shave. You'll end up blaming the blade. Mapping your bread growth and no pressure are the key. When you can get a DFS (Dam fine shave) and leave no weeps behind your ready grasshopper.
If I where you I'd go with the Astra's and finish the whole pack then go with the personna's and do the same.

So I tried out the Merkur for the first time last night and I'm really impressed.

I did wtg x2, across x1 and atgx1. So four passes in total. Does this sound ok?

I only had very a few very small nicks on my neck, so watching mantic59's videos paid off (straight wrist, no pressure).

Decided to go with the personna blades, so I'll be interested to see how the others compare after I've finished the 10 pack.

Thanks to Shaving.ie for the great service and products.

Never even thought of checking this forum for shaving.ie until now. Placed my first order with them on Friday and made a mistake with it - ordered cream instead of soap. Contacted Chris through the form on the and he got back to me on Saturday and changed the cream to a soap for me - no hassle. Shipped Monday - hopefully arriving today or tomorrow :)

    So for my first order:

    1 x Merkur 34c HD Safety Razor
    1 x 50 Blade Premium Selection Sampler
1 x Taylor Old Bond Street Traditional Shave Soap in a Bowl
1 x Black Silvertip Special IV

I see a post in this thread recommending the order to try the different blades so I'll follow that and see how I get on. Better stock up on loo roll to patch up the face after my first attempt :D

The owner of Shaving.ie typically shows up and answers any questions. Examples are dotted throughout the thread if you care to take a look e.g.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=84405351&postcount=1233

As to the original question, I don't think they sell sample packs. If you go to Trumpers directly they'll sell you a sample pack of creams and scents. There are other vendors that do sample packs e.g. Czech and Speake are one I know that sell to Ireland. French crowd too, can't remember their name right now though.
