Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2nd millenium AD Irish Famine?

Could it be possible in Ireland to cause a second famine?
Think about it. Imagine if the agricultural corporations and (increasingly) large scale farmers were coerced or corrupted into exporting all the food/fish abroad to make money (to "aid" the flailing economy) at the hands of corrupt EU political minions, or worse still, gradual conversion over to non-sustainable cash crops to make money and cause starvation. This could be fueled by an increase in imported agricultural products that could easily be cut off, followed by by poisoning of the land air and water, couldn't a Ireland get a second famine?

A blockade and the restriction of fishing fleets could probably bring Ireland to submission over a couple of years, as to whether we would end up in a situation of mass starvations/famine I'd be unsure, We have a reasonably decent agricultural sector, its a small country, Swan is apparently tasty;), there would be a marked deterioration in standards of living obviously and people would mourn the loss of exotic things like Banannas and limes, health might well be affected to a point that the already overloaded system would collapse easily.

Theoretically its possible to cause a famine anywhere.

Any such scenario "simply" requires that you remove access to food supplies. It doesn't matter whether you do so by a scorched earth policy, by selling the food elsewhere, or by not producing/acquiring the food in the food in the first place.

The questions, surely, are why anyone would want to do this in Ireland or elsewhere, and what the reaction (both in the effected area and elsewhere) would be.
