Hi, just wondering if there's anyone out there who's actually happy using Three mobile broadband? (or midband, if you prefer)

Seems like there's a lot of complaints about it on this board, which kinda sucks since I was thinking of using it (prepay) until I can get a more permanent broadband solution.

Reason I wanna go Three is the 20gb cap, and I think the Dublin coverage should be okay, which means the speed should average around 3mbps.

So, any satisfied Three customers out there? :D

i have to say, i am happy with three mobile broadband. i have the 30 day sim, and recently purchased the e585 mifi unit, its great, i mainly use it while out and about, however i have now cancelled the data plan off my phone, and instead connect my phone to the mifi instead, saving the cost of the mobile phone data plan.

on the E585 signal is always full signal, speeds vary from 2-4 mb which is enough for general browsing and email.

unlike other operators you can set a credit limit on your account so if you go over the limit, you wont run up a huge bill!

Just thought Id share with you my super fast internet connection speed in Kerry, and before you say it, im not in the mountains, Im in Killarney town. At times its ok and I can get through emails but latley its been shocking. Tried ringing them and their engineers are useless and dont really care about solving the issue. I think its prob best to avoid mobile broadband at all costs unless your really stuck, which I suppose is about 70% of the population :)1259666106.png

I don't mind 3 at all... I am unable to get a fixed line so I've to get mobile devices for internet and can say 3 works ok for me

Lowest points at 1Mbps... Highest are 3.5Mb and it averages about at 2Mb or so usually with a ping of around 80ms... 5 bars signal from the 3 router i put on the roof and seems to work ok...

Any sort of multitasking or multiple computers hampers it a bit and downloading large files really adds some lag, but as a whole considering I've only mobile options it's not that bad... Meteor had a FAR better connection here but I'm only with 3 for the data limits... If Meteor had a 30gb cap I'd switch over immediately

Too many variables for this type of service but it works ok for me in West Dublin

3 has a 14 day money back gaurantee also and I use the Wifi Router they supply you!

+ i also made a D.I.Y solution to improve speeds by putting the router on the roof in a waterprrof box and running a cat5 cable into my wireless N router for the main network... I posted in a thread recently with pictures of it...

Here's my result from a few mins ago... 19:34 on a tuesday evening

Edit: about the online gaming, i wouldn't really recommend it but it works for me no problem and ive had no issues really and i connect via wifi... downloaded a few demos this week also.. 4-5 demos at maybe a gig each!? it's grand and I havnt unplugged the router since last wednesday.. Ive 15gb remaingin and it renews on friday, Ive clocked up maybe 20 hours online gaming, a few demos, a few softwar downloads general browsing always on service and its fine

and for the software mobile usb dongles make u install are ok, not a fan of them but they do the job fine

    my 2c!

Myself.. some days I get 1.5MB down, 2MB up.. Last few days, I have had to connect\reconnect between different website visits.. impossible to use. The wording of previous posters is spot on, it is very much a gamble. Depends on your location to masts, the topogrophy, congestion, weather, time of day, dirty or clean SIM.. (;) existing customers of 3 know what I'm on about..)

I have a service which sometimes works, in a sorry manner, 'most of the week'.

Lucky members that come on with speed tests close to maximum possible speeds and start getting stroppy with existing discusions.. are in low mast use areas, with very sparse ground users ..or are lucky enough to live very very close to a mast.. a denial of that is to have no comprehension of the technology.

It is midband, it is dial up, it is technology that suffers badly once useage ramps up in any one given area.

I miss the megathread hogging the main page, there's a good few recent 3 threads that could feed that snake..

Current speed , site was down for last two weeks for "upgrading" Was promised as usual that this was a major upgrade and expect better speeds.....

    1261345388.png

The above is the highest speed I have obtained in the past 30mins .. Cant be bothered to call three's customer service again because I couldnt bare to listen to their waffle and lies for 30mins. I have been with three mobile midband for about 2 years, during that time their service a disaster along with their customer service department.

I rang meteor a few mins ago and was talking to a very helpful guy on their costumer team, He was as honest as could be and in the 10mins I was talking to him I got more straight talk then I have out of three's team in 2years.

He told me the best I could hope for from meteor in my area was 2G and that the speed wouldnt be the best. He advised me that in his opinion vodafone or 02 would be best at my location. If I rang three as a new customer they wouldnt be able to spew their 7mbps waffle out of their mouths half fast enough. They dont care about your location or speeds, all they care about is making that sale.

Some people have no problem with three others like myself have nothing but problems. If you try them out make sure you get a 14 day return policy and do speedtests every 30mins-1hr for as many days as you can, at least that way you know what you're getting into.

    Best of luck with it.

Here's another DIY solution, photos taken before it was setup on a pump house about 400m away.

    156109.jpg

    156108.jpg

I'll explain in more detail if anyone needs them, but key points are the main box is a waterproof enclosure (originally desinged for keeping the power sockets for outside christmas lights dry), the router is an Edimax 3G 6200n, there is a 4m USB extension cable to get the best placement for the USB dongle and the antenna was added to increase the range of the WiFi and allow the main box to be mounted away from the antenna. The dongle was orignally "water proofed" by placing it in a plastic bag but its now been mounted in a section of plastic pipe sealed at the top end and mounted vertically. The stuff in the box is held in place with sticky back velcro. Normally I'd use PoE for power but in this case it wasn't suitable. Most bits were from eBay/carboot sales so the whole lot cost less than 80euro to put together.

-=al=-'s DIY solution can be found here

The last 400m to the user is achieved over a Wifi link. I bet that lot cost you around €450 (apart from the dongle) William ?? A phone line would cost €120 ...even if it takes eircom about 2 years to install them nowadays :(

thats very nice indeed, mine was a lazyer winging it approach that was sorted in minutes

but it works none the less, I like that one above there, nice and neat (Y)

Connection has been rather good with 3 still

and i didn't know meteor offered a 30gb bill package, one of the main reason i got 3 was for the router!

I might join meteor when the 3 contract expires i didn't wana get a new 3g router, but with the system i have now if I just got a 30gb meteor sim, made a new profile on the 3 3g router, id' be away with no probs, awesome

You don't know me :D LOL €450 , the original setup was very similar to -=al=-'s but if I say the antenna cost €5.99 (eBay inc P&P) :D:D:D, the box £3.50(UK car boot), the dongle €4.50 (eBay inc P&P) and the router €40 then you'll see it was a bit cheaper than that. Broke my heart to have to buy a double socket for the end of the trailing lead at €4.99 :o, other prices would be, extension lead free (left over after a strimmer accident :o) antenna lead about a fiver years back on eBay and usb extension again about a fiver.

Very nice, basically, since the dongle is going into the router.. and the only thing connected to your assets is the router plug, you don't have to take any specialised lightning precautions?

Hi, I can reate to all the comments here. I've had a not to bad, bearable service from three for 8 months but for the last month im getting speed test results as low as 0.07mbps!!:mad: I've called them today asking them to cancel my contract with immediate effect so I don't have to pay for a service I'm not recieving. 0.07mbps is a far cry from what the sales team promoted when selling me my 60mb heavy usage contract.

This has really angered me and I would like to pursue this further with a consumer agency or small claims court, I'm just wondering has anyone else had any success in his matter?

I've been 99% happy with it since Feb 2012, when I signed up, and bumped up to a faster modem (with renewed 18mth contract) in July or there abouts. If it had been dreadful, as so many others have found, I'd not have stuck with it.
It occasionally goes a bit squirrelly, but so did Eircom's ADSL and the vast majority of the time I'm getting 4x the max speed that Eircom could ever supply me, as I'm out in the sticks and 5km of copper has a speed limitation. Overnight, I'm getting far faster than that, of course, as there's no contention on the cell.
So, on balance, I'm happy enough with it.
This evening it went a bit slow, but who knows why - it's back to normal now.

    Very dishonest or unprofessional.
Me too I have unlimited data usage and without warning they put restriction on data usage.

First time when calling to customer support they said I have to topup by 20 to lift up the restriction. After loading with 20, restriction still in place.

Calling customer support different ball game, saying there is no restriction and there wasn't any before topup either, clear you cache and cookies and everything be back to normal. They do not even want to admit they put data restriction on my account. What a disgrace. Bad dishonest people. Wont recommend

I have the same problem always slow and unusable. The speed is under a 1mb and it will not load YouTube videos. What is the point of having a 60GB limit when you cannot use it. I contacted them and they said the would call me to troubleshoot the problem with me, so I am waiting to hear from them. If I get told to reset the device I will not be happy as it does noting, also turning it off and on is no help.

Still waiting to hear from them, got a reply from them yesterday and they said they would contact me within 48 hours. Anyone wait a long time for them to call you back?

I thought they might have decent 4G, but they havent.
    Its so localized its useless.
Data speeds were always crap with 3 and their coverage of 3G and 4G outside of cities is terrible.
So having waited to see if 4G improved things, it hasnt so ... Im out.

I know this is an old thread but would be interested in comments / views on the 4G mobile broadband.
I have both the 3G Hot shot from o2 and the 4G Mi Fi from 3 and speed tests indicate the Hot shot download is 5.15Mb and the 4G from 3 is only 1.53Mb .
which is not great from the 4G unit ????

I must say I am very happy with 3 broadband. In the 4 years I am with them I have had no problems with them. I now have 4g with them and the speeds are excellent.

WOW, you are so lucky, I have o2 3G and 3 4G both in the same house and there is no difference, in fact o2 most of the time is faster and fast for me in Dublin is 3mb.
You clearly have zero congestion , well done

I live in carrigaline a town with a population of 14,000 and one three mobile mast. I think that there would be congestion in the area, but my three mobile broadband is always good.

14000 probable equates to 5000 that use 3 ? A mast will cover 100000 ? I think I will move to carrigaline, I hope your using your broadband speed to the full with Movie streams , Android box and XBMC downloads , 1 channell, Icefilms, and music.

No idea what is happening with Three recently for me... used to be stuck on horrible speeds (0.50Mbps at best). Now doing stuff like this late at night - and decent daytime speeds too (3 to 4 Mbps),

I have a horrible feeling it will get rubbish again just when I start to get used to it!

Been with THREE for the past 2 months now - fairly happy with the connection so far, can't say the same for the Sales fella putting me on a 1month €20 contract mobile phone service though that I didn't agree too [€40 down the drain]...!

I am just back from Three store in Dundrum. I was never so angered and disappointed in my life by service I received.

    Here is the story:

I wanted to move from bill pay to pre pay, therefore 30 days ago I rang Three technical support to give notice about it. The person on a phone told me to come on 25th of November to any Three store to collect my new pre pay sim card. I though great! This is easy!

I could be more wrong… On 25th of November when I woke up I realized that my sim card is not working any more. I rang technical support from another phone I had, I explained that I am expecting an important phone call today so I need my sim card to be working. They told me I had to go to the store to sort this out. I had planned to go to the store after work, but as I needed my sim card to be working I went in the middle of my working day to try and sort this out as soon as possible. When I came, instead of getting the new sim card I had to buy a ten €10 credit and afterwards I also had to call technical support team to move my old number to pre pay sim card. Technical support this time also informed that number transfer will take up to 2 hours.

Eventually I got the new sim card. Thanks God, I though!! But no! I could not make any calls as there was no credit, even though I just topped it up by €10. I went back to the store to see why there is no credit and I was then informed that it takes around half an hour for credit to be there... Well, thanks for letting me now in advance.

Definitely not staying with Three and spending my €10 credit on charity.

Thanks Three for the wonderful experience!
