Hey, wondering if there is anywhere in Ireland that build boats made of wood anymore? I would love to build my own boat (that won't sink) but wouldn't know where to start. Also what are the best sites for plans etc.

The place to begin your education :) is:-

    http://forum.woodenboat.com/index.php

    very addictive site.

Plenty of guys building wooden boats in Ireland and the UK , a lot of people do it as a hobby/past time. Have a look at Watercraft magazine and Classic Boat.

This guy down is Cork is building wooden boats
    http://roeboats.com/

and you could always start off with doing a course with these guys:-

and remember : No boats = No sport, so all hands build hulls!

Thanks for those great links Fingalian; I've no aspirations to build a boat (not just yet anyway) but it's nice to see what that Cork boat builder is turning out of what appears to be a very modest shop.

Most of the entries have pictures, you need to click through to see the full story. The last one doesn't.

It's at a very early stage, so the pictures aren't terribly exciting.

I bought plans and a manual off Clcboats.com, it was only for a stitch and glue kayak but it turned out quite well, i think. They have a ball of designs from kayaks to small boats. The only thing is the materials are cruel expensive, it cost me 600 quid to build a 13ft Kayak, i got the stuff in dublin. But that said i really want to build another 1, maybe a timber strip design, they look class. I may start saving. Thats a picture of what i made, it was fairly simple to do.

Thanks "jack of all," I egotistically presume that comment was aimed at me. I'm stupidly proud of it I have to say. Realistically the finish could be better on both the outside and inside, (the picture isn't very clear, its not what you'd call show winner) but its good enough for me. I think I'd be terrified to use had I got it much better, for fear of damaging it. The next one will be right tho, hopefully:). I should learn from my mistakes and impatience's.
I was just looking at the plans of your boat oscar, its a fairly big lump of a boat the two of you are building, no throwing that on the roof of the car and down to the nearest pothole. Ah no, fair play. I seen a few pictures of finished boats there, they look very well when their done. How will you finish it? keep it natural or paint it? or have you any plans yet? the site is a nice touch, keep it going. best of luck with the build.

Heh, no - we'll either pick up a boat trailer somewhere, or Shane will get a chance to demo his welding skillz.

We'll be painting it. We haven't decided on colours yet, but the inside will almost certainly be white, and we'll figure out what to do with the hull before we're done.

    Cheers.

Hi centre half, I am on my second 1950's style boat build from scratch this was my first time doing any sort of woodworking expect for a bit of DIY and I have the bug now "love wood",they are built on a very tight budget with a lot of reclaimed wood and parts bought on ebay. The plans are from Glen-l and are full size so no lofting.
