So, what are we to expect? A good performance and comfortable win from England following on from Croatia? Or a mediocre performance with a shoddy last minute win/draw as per the England of old?

Seriously, why do Irish people care so much about this? I know people have an interest in other football but I don't see threads for the French, German, Spanish and Italian national team matches very often.

what an odd comparison, of course there would be more interest in an england game then one of any other country bar our own, it's because we're incredibly familier with them. We all see their players on the premiership/MotD every single week, we know them back to front and have exactly the same level of exposure to their players as we do to our own.

On the game itself, england win. im intrigued to see what will happen in center mid though. Hargreaves and Carrick still prob aren't fit but im interested to see who of Gerrard, Barry and Lampard will start. Will Capello try again with Lamps and Gerrard? Gerrard has finally started showing again that he can reliably be part of a 2 man midfield without ruining the balance of the team so i could see him and Barry in the middle. Lampard has been great for Chelsea though, and while he never does as well for England, its still harsh enough to drop him.

I think if i were England boss at this point i'd be going with;

Defoe--Rooney
Young--Barry--Gerrard--Walcott

though with Young not even included i'm not sure..

He's going to start Gerrard and Lampard int he middle. I'd put money on it.

Erm, if you will only watch an EPL game if there's an irishmen playing, then yes you most definitely have a problem with England.

ok i do have a problem with england. I don't stick to that way all the time but generally a english league match won't interest me if there is not an irish player on the pitch.

And no they wouldn't. Messi, Kaka and Ronaldinho could play here and for a couple of weeks people would go and then the novelty would wear off.

im not even that sort of LOI fan anyway...i just like the style of play and go and watch random matches, so it has nothing to do with the league of ireland.

des is obsessed with the english national team for example and im sure he likes the LOI more than me.

Look back to when clubs were able to sell tickets. Look at my hometown Dundalk, playing against Celtic and spurs to name a couple of teams in competitive matches back in the day. My da and his mates went to every match in the ****hole known as Oriel Park and went to Dublin and put up with the smell of the septic Tolka and Liffey to see their decent team play another decent team. I would sooner stand in the pissin rain watching a local winter league match than watch the ****ty Eircom League on television.

I've gone off football a lot lately tbh, I find it hard to watch a match that doesn't have something to do with Arsenal.

I don't have a basement, I live in a bungalow. Ah yes, 4 years old cheering arsenal on to their dizzying 10th place.

I ****in love football and I wish I hadn't stopped playing, but I just find it hard to watch sometimes when there's two teams playing poorly and some little bitch lyin on the ground for 2 minutes when there's an alternative like Rugby League. Even Arsenal games can be tough to sit through at times.

Funny that you should mention someone else not being a football fan.

If you're a fan of football, it won't make a blind bit of difference if there's an irish player on the pitch or not!

I'm just thinking of great games you missed out on because of your narrow minded attitude. Chelsea/Villa 4-4 last season came to mind straight away. That was a great game of ball.

On topic;

I'd say England will win comfortably, however... like any games against weak opposition, they will be trying to break down an 11 man defence for 90mins.

I just have great respect for people that support a LOI team, and still love watching the game at a high level too (and having a favourite team, call it support to if ya will).

I think if most of us did this the world would be a happier place!

the fact remains that we are all bound to know the english players as well as our own, and far better then those of other nations simply because we're exposed to them so much. Exposure breeds interest. Its hard not to be aware of the internationals when the teams most of us support aren't playing because of them and we'll become saturated with commentary on international football over the next week, majoratively based on Ireland and England.

of which there have been very little, in fact when we became seld dependant and properly seperated from Britian the country started to improve....post 1960.

i would have prefered the dutch or spanish to have colonised the place.

NOTHING. Played an indirect in the starvation of the countries people, pillaged and raped through the land, abolished our language through fear, and generally hated everything about us.

My dad in London in the 70's was victim of a lot of abuse for being Irish. I lived as a young kid in London, only a few years back when my family moved so much and still anti-irish sentiments exist.

Links might not be the right word, but England has been good to many thousands of Irish people whose own country could not give them work, many thousands of Irish have family in England, we follow English teams, we watch English tv, we read English newspapers and magazines, we shop in English shops,they are a huge exporter for our business, they consistently are the biggest group of tourists to the country, culturally we are the same. I prefer to for the positive in people, I find you will get much more in return, but maybe that is just me

What part of London did you live? I lived in London in the mid 90's, I am constantly over in London now, the anti irish sentiment does not exist imo,I have never experienced it, none of my friends have experienced it.

Anyway think we should get back on topic as we have gone way off topic.

Ok I agree with some but I disagree with this, Britian but mostly England was no more good to the irish than the usa was to the africans or that ireland has been 'good' to the polish. the irish provided a function and did the work that their employers asked of them for very little money.

now i agree its better to look at positives but its not like i hate english people.

I presume the interest has much to do with the fact we are not playing untill Wednesday, it will probably be raining and alot of people have sky sports.

I watch a fair few English games myself because I am so familiar with the players, not too bothered if they win or lose generally, athough I do enjoy the english media throwing their toys out of the pram when they lose, draw or 'only' win 2-0.

I might watch this, although tommorow is going to be a great day weather wise so i might be out doing something, but what im saying is i neither like, hate, despise, adore the england national football team.

Its funny when they lose but if ireland qualified I couldn't care less if england did or didn't make it.

the only rivalry i care about is northern ireland and those damn cypriots.

you haven't worn an irish jersey around i'd say thats pretty much certain to assume.

i remember playing football one day with the ireland jersey on and out of nowhere some grown man started abusing me...throwing out all the usual crap and whats worse I heard its even worse in birmingham.

lucky for me i wasn't a sensetive kid but i'd say others would take it much worse.
