Today we are announcing a beta version of our new map much like the old map but very much different underneath, the main reason for the change is mostly for structural and maintainability reasons.

    http://irelandoffline.org/mapbeta

There are a number of new features:
    VDSL Cabinets

    Find your town
    find your phone number
    A new demographics section
    Constituencies (find your TD)
    Population
    Urban areas
    NBS Areas

The beta only works with modern browsers (IE9+)

Please give it a test drive and let us know what you think or if you have any ideas, thoughts, suggestions or indeed facilities you'd like to see in such a map.

And as ever if you spot any bugs do please let us know so we can fix them up.

    Thanks

Not spotted any bugs in it yet,

Looks good! I had a look in Chrome (v33.0) and all seemed good. If I find any bugs will let you know.
FYI We are doing a similar project for mobile coverage (http://freq.ie/mobile-networks-in-ireland-mar-7th/) There will be a lot more data coming up over the next few weeks.

The fixed wireless thing is weird. Sometimes Net1 shows, other times it doesn't. Sometimes is shows Net1 as the only provider in Ireland.

It shows wireless providers that cover the place you last clicked.

Any plans for detailing what mobile masts have 4G enabled?

    Probably.
But actually once they have customers it will be irrelevant. None of them have enough spectrum to make 4G much better than 3G / HSPA, except when heavily loaded it will be 0.25Mbps to 1Mbps instead of 0.12Mbps to 0.5Mbps. Lightly loaded at an average real world distance there is almost no difference on the same size channels.

    It will never be Broadband.

Ok. Back in your box now.

    NO

    For a few reasons:

    1. The information is all top seKret and in general the mobile telcos behave like little children with their information....now I wonder why that is? Do they not want consumers to know the real story? They babble on about "commercially sensitive" but that's (in our opinion) simply just a cloak for utter marketing led incompetence.
Of course, and this has to be stressed, there is one notable exception to this and that telco has been very open about their plans and forthcoming with real verifiable and usable information. We may indeed publish that information sometime in the near future (and thanks guys for your assistance)

    2. LTE/4G cannot/will not be a solution to the broadband problem and it should never be considered as a replacement for proper broadband, it is simply not suitable. 4G is perfectly fine for what it was designed for - mobility.

    3. We have seen the supposed future 4G plans and frankly there's more reality in a harry potter novel.

    4. Just because it's marketed as flying horses and sooperfast blah blah doesn't actually make it so. The independent measurement tests done on lightly loaded networks in the UK give us a more realistic view of the likely performance to expect on 4G and while it's better than 3G it can't be considered as broadband, in fact these independent tests show some very disappointing results for 4G and show up some notorious 180Mb/s peddlers as well, in our opinion, either un-educated or perhaps deliberately mis-selling the capabilities of 4G*.
The reality here has yet to be seen and the probable performance especially on loaded cells...yes it's all been modeled but models are a notoriously bad way to plan things as they frequently vary wildly from the reality on the "ground".

We do look forward to a nation wide 4G rollout and we ourselves will make great use of it but reality must always prevail.

*(There are a number of technical reasons why 4G will never perform as the marketing seems to promise - you know physics and not some easter bunny marketing)

Yes that would be nice, but it won't be really Nationwide will it?
Hasn't Comreg stipulated more lax coverage rules than 3G or GSM (2G)?

They will only install it where there is a quick return on investment.

Beta 2 released yesterday, minor improvements etc, some new sections added but essentially nothing very new.

VDSL distance calculations now follow roads rather than line of sight.
    (Thanks for that suggestion)

    Again all suggestions/ideas are welcome.

Another new beta (beta3) added...this one includes the National Broadband Plan villages so proper analysis can be done on this proposal.

The mapping engine was rewritten and most "objects" are now interactive.

For instance if you click on a "village" in the NBP section you will be presented with a map that zooms in on that area.

This is the last beta as the telecomms industry is moving very quickly now so this may go "live" over the next few days.

Again thanks to all who made suggestions and observations it has really helped us clean up the data and make somewhat more useful ways of presenting the data.

Again all comments/suggestions/ideas/puppy sacrifice etc are most welcome

We've added some more layers to the NBP section of the map for analysis purposes of where fibre assets are being duplicated. Obviously our internal analysis is much deeper than this simple presentation allows.

Great map, have used the old one in the past too, the fibre map especially is great

Where do you get the planned dates etc from?

Phase 30 means sometime before 2016...so yes nothing is finalized yet

OK mini newsflash the map is finally out of beta...the url is http://irelandoffline.org/map and is linked to from our front page

All other beta urls and old maps are now retired...

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions it was very much appreciated and without the feedback we wouldn't have this resource.

The new bits are a slightly new interface and colour scheme...
Tweaks here and there (these will be ongoing)
Some new information on exchange based VDSL deployments.

Once again we depend on your feedback so please keep letting us know what you think.

Many thanks to all who have been involved
