Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is it too early to blame the russians?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,655 ✭✭✭✭Tokyo

Reports that there might be a survivor.

Considering that debris field, that would be nothing short of a miracle :/

Reports that there might be a survivor.
    Links?

I'm quite sceptical of those claims, after seeing pictures of the crash site - people are saying there are pieces of the plane and pieces of bodies.

La Provence are reporting that there might be a survivor, according to the rescue coordinator General David Galtier.

Looking at the debris though I really don't think its possible for someone to have survived :(

A survivor would be ****ing incredible.

The aircraft hit the side of that mountain at 400 knots.

Had a look at the live coverage page linked in the tweet.

They are quoting one member of the rescue team who told a radio station around 2PM: "Our priority is is rescue possible survivors. We might have spotted a body which was moving.".

Given own uncertain the original source was and the fact that it was 4 and a half hours ago ... unfortunately I doubt this is very solid information.

Apologies Jonjo for my sarcasm. You are right - there are in fact such reports (on which I remain a doubting Thomas), but bear in mind that links don't cost money.

It does perhaps verify the speed on that reddit graph, going intact into the mountain at that speed would smash into a confined but littered* debris field...rather than the likes of the Air Inter crash or Turkish Airlines into the forest decades ago where large sections were at the crash site.

    * for want of a more appropriate term.

+1000. I couldn't see any debris much larger than a suitcase. That's a very high intensity impact. Lockerbie blew up and fell from 35,000 feet and there were bigger sections of aircraft left. Ditto for the Ukraine tragedy. Though one person did survive to the ground after Lockerbie A flight attendant IIRC. She was alive but unconscious and passed away before help could arrive. If someone lived through this tragedy, even for a few minutes that would as Mike said nothing short of a miracle.

    Terrible accident. RIP.

I notice Germanwings is due to be effectively wound up and re-incorporated into Eurowings, it was announced a few months back.

I assume there will be no adverse effects on the airline or on Lufthansa for that reason? The brand's days were already numbered.

I didn't know that you put on the oxygen mask to your children first. Thought it was the other way around?

It is. You can't help others if you're unconscious yourself. Ensure your own air supply, then ensure others.

edit: germanwings in-flight safety card states the same too: http://my-safetycard.de/pics/thumbs/17198.jpg

Oh God. I am just hearing from the BBC 16 kids died in that awful crash.

There are simply numb feelings when I heard about that statistic. R.I.P to all who were killed in that crash today.

He's wrong. I don't know where the media find these "experts" , the real ones are too busy working it seems.

Obviously early days as far as the investigation is concerned, but from the images I saw there didn't seem to be a lot of scorching to the impact area. May be nothing but I hope there wasn't a fuel shortage or problem. Rip

I guess he never even bothered listening to the safety announcement before a flight. Spreading incorrect safety information on National media is not something he can be proud of :-/

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭Thepoet85

Thought I heard the "expert" say children first but thought I misheard.

I was listening to the local deputy who joined the Interior minister for a heli flight over the crash site, he said very clearly that no impact site has been located. The debris is all there, but he said that no particular area seemed scorched or impacted.
The area looks dark and blackened to me, but I guessed they're talking about an obvious explosion site, there just isn't any.

They'll probably omit the clip at the 9 o'clock news.

    Southwest Airlines saftey announcement:

"If you have a small child travelling
with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are
travelling with two small children, decide now which one you love more."

    He corrected himself.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭Thepoet85

Could be possible that it broke up before impact maybe. Not much point in speculating I guess. I just noticed that I couldn't see a definitive scorch or impact zone

Tragic event for all involved, Sickening the news agency's bolting on "it's not Terror related" seems they cant help themselves inserting Terror into every event without any findings.

Off color, light hearted humor and jokes take away the morbidity from tragic situations such as these I think. It shouldn't all be grief porn should it ?

I agree. I know people are saying the tragedies of the last year or so are still less than miniscule in number compared to the amount of flights without incident - and of course this is true, and good to emphasise; it's important for there not to be scaremongering.

But there have still been more such disasters than normal over the course of a year, tiny and all as that number has been.

Statistically blips like this crop up now and again, But this does not detract from the terrible events and all involved.

Another two victims appear to have been identified.

A woman originally from the small Spanish town of Jaca was among the dead, according to the town's mayor.

The mayor said she was on board the flight with her baby son.

The woman - named as Marina Bandres - lived in Britain.

Other known victims include 16 students and two teachers from a high school in the German town of Haltern am See.

German opera singer Maria Radner, her husband and her baby are also thought to have been killed alongside opera singer Oleg Bryjak.

The Sydney Morning Herald says Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confirmed that two Australians were also among the dead.

An israeli man has also been confirmed to have been on board the flight.

Terrible how many young people lost their lives :(

Very, very sad turn of events. My heart goes out to the family and friends of all who died. I couldn't imagine the heartbreak of being told that a family member had died in a plane crash. A terrible, terrible tragedy. The absolute terror them people must have faced when they realised that plane was going down, god love them.

How many times, I couldn't count. But they are used on the Dublin/Heathrow route, and Knock/Gatwick route, which I use 2-3 return flights a year, for the last 15 or 16. Some could use it weekly.

Figures I heard today, over 2000 in service in europe, one taking off or landing every few seconds. The odds are very low.

None of that though is consolation to those who died today.

    :(
