Mini Winter Matchplay Event

Great day for links golf. A strong enough wind at times - for example 9 was a 4 iron even after a JD.

But a perfect day for winter golf - a bit wet in places and bunkers out of play in parts. So was a non qualifying day.

I'm fairly inexpereniced at matchplay (only played it 3 times now) - so sort of new territory in what is a friendly enough competition - but great practice for future club events. But I genuinely would be looking forward to trying to get to a Semi and final on what are 2 great courses.

I was genuinely disappointed that his driver deserted him at the wrong time - I also started to play better on the last 4 holes too. Didn't make too many putts , but as Golfgraffix has said to me , sometimes the battle in matchplay can be to get on the green. You can win a hole without needing to make a putt at all. Long putting still strong enough but.

Best I ever seen Golfgraffix play in Corballis - and he had me in trouble as was in the lead 2 times and 1 up with only 4 to go.

So enjoyable event - looking forward to my next two games. Looks like there is not going to be too many easy games in our group.

By the way, whatever you think of the place, it is a great place to try get hole in ones. I can remember at least 5 very close ones there over the last year - Myself, darcool, Scub and to add to that PARlance was bang on for one yesterday - hit the flag but major bounce back from flag 13. So I've seen a very close one now on 1/4/6/13/17.

I wonder will we see one there soon ?

Anyway looking forward to 2016. This looks the makings of a nice little event - and will keep game moving in winter.


BTW - Golfgraffix and I played full difference - so all others do same please - lower guy to scratch - higher guy to difference.

Also finish out games and record score. I'll post up a table after everyone has played a few games.
Do not play extra holes in group stage - a 1/2 is a 1/2 each.

If everyone could target 1 game at least played by mid January.

Again - it does not have to be Friday but that is the general plan. Corballis can be played most days and if need be we can play Saturday.

Put a notification onto this thread - so you see if someone is looking for a game.

You can play matches in any sequence.

Maybe someone would fancy a match in gap to new year.

Lads - The weather is very good for the next week or so.

Well, courses will need a few days to dry. Even Corballis will be very wet in parts.

Was out today. Just knock around . A bit like above.
But oddly nice.

Lads we didn't know this winter league was going to be so honest a winter league.

No looks nice. Lined trousers . Two socks ready.

But it looks Mediterranean.

So 2nd match played - we will up the ante in new year, to get 2 games done each by end of January.

As we said , would only be right to keep the winter league an honest winter league. As we travelled to Corballis on the back sea view road, it was still covered in the sub zero frost. The place was packed , Christmas golf is fun , but we look forward to having the place back to ourselves , not the Christmas present rush.

Horrendously slow - frozen practice green , almost unplayable in parts. But was still a great day for golf (at times).
Was a pleasure to watch dar's start , considering he is not playing much winter golf this year. First hole, 8 inches from hole - hole won , putt not given :D
And then it continued , 3 up after 4 for dar. Looked like we could head in at 13.

But that is the joy of matchplay - stick at it, and well done The Big - he played the important shots at the right times - some remarkable up and downs , I was all over the place looking for balls , but the ones I can recall are great wins / halves on 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17.

The most memorable by The Big, was a par on 12 after being in bad positions twice. Including a great up and down from bunker edge.

So a great win of 3 up for The Big- and proof that you never give up in matchplay , never.

To accommodate everyone playing, that lads kindly put the tee time forward, but the pace of play was chronic - and at near 3 pm hitting 11 - things were not looking great to finish. We were waiting to play on almost every tee , this did not help the flow of good play. Some of the greens were actually frozen too, causing bizarre bounces and ice hockey pace. .

The match ended on 17 - in darkness (even with the extra minute per day ) , but thankfully it didn't influence outcome, as in darkness the 2 lads had pars on 17 , a par on 17 is a good score any daylight of the week , 2 fantastic up and downs from the 2 lads. And that was that. Another match still in the mix up to 17.

So - see all in New year, when we will have the course back to ourselves. great little event.

On 4 , with the backdrop of Lambay, the clear fresh cool air, blue sky - you could have fooled yourself it was mid summer. As dar's ball did that true golfers' flight , high and turning onto the pin again. You realised after all the wait, it was worth it again.
