Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can I get Sky+ without a phoneline

    I've been a Sky subscriber for a number of years. I've just moved house and I want Sky+, but I've no phoneline in the new house.

    I purchased a Sky+ box from a normal dealer (i.e not Sky direct) and paid the normal "no offer" €299 for it. He told me to ring up Sky to get them to activate my existing card in the Sky+ box (I can get most channels but not the Sports) and to turn on the recording facility.

    I rang up Sky (on my mobile) and the guy took me to the Installers Menu to press a few buttons to activate Sky+. He then told me to get off the phone as the final step requires the use of the phoneline. I just said "okay" and didnt let on I had no phoneline and hoped for the best. But the activation failed and I was left as I had been (no Sports and no recording facility).

    I then read the Sky+ terms and conditions and it said you're obliged to be connected to phoneline if you bought direct from Sky - which may imply that if you didnt buy direct from Sky (like me) you're not obliged to connect to a phoneline?

    Does anyone know for sure if I ring up Sky and tell them I have no phoneline whether they will activate my card in the Sky+ box?
    Or will I need to wait until I get a phoneline in (or maybe activate in another house that has a phoneline)?

    You have to have a phoneline, I was living in an apartment complex last year and tried to get Sky+ but the three dealers in the town refused to install it because they'd 'get into trouble with Sky' for installing a box in a home with no phone line.

    you do not need a phone line if you buy the equipment then you dont need the phone. the Sky agent said it was fine when i rang in to activate my card

    I can confirm I am now fully connected to Sky+ without a telephone line - but I did pay the full whack for the box, dish and installation (something like 300+50+170 AFAIR)

    As an aside I'll just mention that I've had to ring Sky a number of times recently and the customer service people I've been talking to have generally been very friendly and helpful.

    Same as was with ordinary Sky, without a phone line there is less subsidy so it cost more for box / install. Renatl the same.

    Er, can I just slip in a quick almost-unrelated question to the end of this... It is possible then to "buy" a Sky+ box and not pay for box-rental?
    I didn't think that was possible with Sky+.
    What does it save? €10 per month? ...or is there something else I'm missing?

    (I would be more inclined to go for Sky+ if I didn't have to pay the ongoing extra)

    If you're already subscribed to two Sky premium channels then the monthly fee is waived.This fee is basically for the right to record.Tis a farce tbh.

    At the moment we have 'basic Sky'. If I _bought_ the Sky+ box (assuming that is possible) could I use that, in full, as a Sky+ (with record I mean) without paying extra?
    If not, what is the advantage of paying full-whack for the box?

    it's not as already mentioned. buying the box gives you the right to have it unplugged to the phone line for the 1st 12 months

    To use the Sky+ box to it's full potential (ie. record) you have to pay Sky the extra monthly sub or sign up for the extra premium channels for the privilige.

    It was the TiVo box in UK that allowed you to pay extra for the box and get a lifetime subscription to recordign features and TV Guide, IIRC.

    I wish Sky+ had a similar offer, whereby, pay a montly PVR fee and get the box free or near it, or pay a wadge for the box and no extra PVR fees. Until then I too won't be buying a Sky+ bosca. :(
