Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

an irish team in the champions leauge, good or bad

    would it really be good for the leauge, or would it just cause further finanical problems,

    came up in conversation today when was talking about the current finanical problem for a number of clubs, if you consider the amount of money a club gets for playing in the first round of the CL, liverpool were recently quoted something like 15million for reaching the first round, if an irish club was to make it, on one hand, you think fantasic, irish representation in one of the worlds most glamerious football competitions apart from the world cup, fantasic income for the club, and exposure of our players, but on the other hand, just how much damage could that money do, so it might set your club up for a good few years, clear your debts, tidy up that stand, build the new clubhouse, etc etc, but what about the rest of the leuage, would they be able to compete, would they be able to keep up, would it create a gulf between clubs, personally, i think it would be great to see an irish team competing in it, but would be concerned of the possible damage it could do, as for some of the reason given above

    The status of the whole league would increase as a result. If the top side started to sign players from abroad or something, it'd just mean the level of footballers just behind that (who might have been with that side otherwise) would join smaller clubs, and everyone would benefit in some shape or form

    Kinda obvious answer as the funds would develop the club. And imagine the amount of eircom league quality players you could buy with that money

    Thats football, teams are already struggling to keep up, group stages should mean extra exposure and advertising revenue for the whole league.

    Actually I think it's a valid question. Look at Norway, Rosenborg qualified for the group stages, and with the extra revenue they've managed to finance a team that has won the league 8 out of the last 10 seasons. It could be argued that an Irish team making the group stages would end up doing the same, thereby stifling all decent competition in the league as the other teams would merely be playing for second place.

    Eh Man United have won 10 of the last 16 leagues? Surely thats much worse.

    Yeah, but there's a lot of money floating around the EPL, other teams can still qualify for the Champions League and get their share, that can't happen in Norway or Ireland, so the effect of a huge cash injection would be more distorted. The fact that other English clubs haven't been able to compete with ManU is because their wealth is derived as much from their off-field revenues as it is from matchday income or prize money.

    €4.5m before attendances, if it was to happen next few years youd have to expect a full RDS after that youd hopefully be getting a full house in Landsdowne.

    Nope. Anyone remember Shels-La Courna in Lansdowne, about 24,000 at that, next league game no more tha 2,400, so feck it and feck the bandwagon Oirish fans. We'll never attract new loyal fans and e'll have to live with that, it's Ireland, people pride in the interantional team but love their Enlgish team every other weekend.:confused:

    No one has qualified for the CL groups yet, but more or less what you are saying is still happening. Drogs, Shels, SPA, CCFC and Bohs have tried living outside their means, and at present, only SPA are ok, as they have a sugardaddy. The other, one was relegated, another is in examinership, and rumours that the other 2 are within weeks of entering same.

    Re the original question, it could do no harm. I just wish the former poster here "the jolly roger" were around to field it. he was fun.

    I take it you were one of the ones who didn't go to the next Shels match after Depor game then?

    On the other hand, an Irish team making the group stages of the CL is a far off dream as far as I'm concerned.

    Irish teams need to be concentrating on getting past the last qualification stage of the UEFA Cup first, we've already had teams at that stage of the UEFA Cup for a number of the last seasons.

    It's the next logical step for irish teams, NOT the CL Groups.
