I find it hard to spend €20 in Aldi let alone €50 when you don't include wine!

I just used this week's Aldi voucher from the Sunday Independent in Tesco. I also had a €6 off €40 spend voucher to be used this week.

Got 6 bottles of wine @ 25% off, 2 selection boxes, 2 big bags of Walkers Sensations and a tub of Quality Street for €36.95.

My shopping should have been €69.91 before offers and coupons, so I basically got almost 50% off.

The girl on the till nearly didn't let me use the Tesco voucher and the competitor voucher together, she was about to explode when I asked to check with the supervisor - who said it was fine!

    Happy Days!!

so if you spend 50 they give you 10 back? or they give you 10 of your next shopping?

They are usually in newpapers, buy 50+ worth and you get 10 off there and then, none of this next shop crap. Many people use them in tesco instead as they accept them.

The weeks aldi & lidl have these vouchers they are less likely to have amazing offers on at the same time. However in tescos they might be running really good offers so you hit them hard.

e.g. in a small amount of tescos you can currently get 24x500ml cans of guinness for €20 which is extremely cheap, so you could get 3 trays for €50, no way in hell you would get that in aldi or lidl the week they publish vouchers.

I'm beginning to wonder if Aldi & Lidl will actually do them this Christmas.....last year they did them in Aug/Sept for back to school - there was none this year. They'd nearly be out by now if they were doing them....

The vouchers were in the papers last year on the first Sunday in December & the following two Sundays also. So hopefully we will soon have them!!!

I'd expect at the very least they will be around Christmas week but if I was a gambling man I'd say weekend after next they will be back.

No vouchers tomorrow anyway. Are they giving them at all this year. Such a loss. I had a couple of lists ready!!

There will be threads all over here if there are vouchers. There is nothing gained by asking or griping.

Sorry Moderator. Ill be more careful in future.

    I'm not a moderator here.

I have a feeling that Tesco acceptance of vouchers has massively reduced the appeal to Lidl/Aldi of producing them. There are people here who I suspect work for Aldi due to how early we find out Super6 etc so if they are going to do them we'll likely be amongst the first to know.

What is your thinking/logic behind this?

My theory was aldi/lidl love the fact tesco accept them, as they can really screw them over and plan to release them while tesco already have really good offers on. e.g. right now tesco have trays of beer going cheap, so if I was in charge of Aldi/lidl I would release now. It is rare to see very good offers in lidl/aldi when the vouchers are released for their own shops.

People in other threads claimed to work for tesco and said they were being hit really hard by the aldi/lidl vouchers.

If people go to tesco instead aldi/lidl might think its a loss in potential sales, but in the long run they could be forcing tesco to sell at a loss and so really screw them. When I use the vouchers in tesco I am sometimes 100% certain they are making a loss (e.g. buying spirits which are already certainly below cost, even if cost was free).

My really cheeky suggestion would be for aldi to realise 49euro off a shop of 50 euro for use on stephens day, when all aldi shops are closed but tesco are open! ;)

I have also asked & wondered about how it works with papers. I am guessing lidl/aldi might get the ads/coupons published for free, or are even possibly paid by the paper to carry them. I know its the only time I ever buy those rags, some people buy mulitple copies and I have seen them sold out.

Dunnes have the better idea, spend 50 euro and get 10 off your next shop in tesco or dunnes. Lots of people have certain products they only buy in dunnes or tesco, so could spend 50 in dunnes and use it in tesco, which might be of benefit to dunnes, depending on what they buy.

If your intent is to drive market share, pushing people to competitors does not achieve that intent.

Who says that is their intent though? If it puts tesco out of business it should benefit them. Or if it severely severely reduces tescos profits, or in this case potentially increase their losses as they may not even break even -so is not just reducing profits.

Depends on what people are buying of course. In the tesco threads you will notice many peoples tesco vouchers prevent online purchases around this time. I figured this was to stop people buying up crates of beer, which are possibly sold at very little profit, or even at a loss, but are heavy and not attractive instore buys to many people.

My joke suggestion of 49 off a 50 euro spend is probably allowed to be done legally, and would totally screw over tesco. I do wonder if what they are doing is a more subtle version of this.

Seeing as Tesco did not take them for some time, I doubt damaging Tesco was the plan to begin with.

If tesco are onto such a great trick/idea by accepting them then why do you reckon aldi do not copy them and take competitor coupons too? tesco sent plenty out in recent mailings.

Not sure if tesco were accepting competitor coupons when aldi ones were first were in papers. I never said it was their initial plan, but quite possibly turned out to be a very beneficial unintended consequence for aldi, which they might later have taken advantage of by releasing on selective dates.

I was saying aldi are possibly paid by the papers to carry these coupons, aldi could be hoping they are not used in their stores, could be better off for people be causing tesco to make a loss. I don't see any tesco coupons in papers, and I am sure any paper would love to have the massive increase in sales.

Tesco are selective about what coupons they accept. People had previously reported having iceland and M&S coupons accepted, not certain if both were officially taken, I think iceland were officially accepted.

    http://www.tesco.ie/CompetitorCoupons/
    it is now only 4
We accept spend & save coupons only from Dunnes Stores, SuperValu, Lidl and Aldi

I got 4x10 off 50 euro spend coupons in the door for use in a local(ish) lidl, I live far closer to a tesco. I am waiting to hear if people nearer the lidl also got them too. I will be using all mine in tesco, mainly on stuff they are already definitely making a loss on.

If I worked in marketing/accounts of marketing in aldi/lidl I would be taking full advantage of tescos policy.

Tesco are taking them in a desperate attempt to retain market share.

Nobody in Aldi or Lidl HQ wants to hand market share to competitors

aldi or lidl can easily get around tesco using them. e.g. if people spend 40 or 50 euro then give them a 10 off voucher for the store (not a 10 euro off your next 50 spends like dunnes do). Tesco will not accept these, and if they did then aldi would be delighted. You would have people splitting shopping like they do in tesco, put through 50 euro, hold back 10euros worth and could possibly get that free using the voucher just handed to them. Though they might prefer people having to come back another day to use it, and most probably would.

There are probably a few other ways to get around tescos qualifications for accepting them too.

I suspect they've just found it easier not to do them and compete on cost instead.

This is a bit more local than most alerts - but it is a bargain.

The freesheet Dun Laoghaire Gazette currently (27/Dec-4/Jan edition) has a €10 off €50 voucher for Aldi Sallynoggin only Valid 27/Dec- 4th Jan.

Probably a response to the new Lidl opening nearby.

"only original coupons are valid" - so probably wouldn't work.

The papers are pretty widely available in the area though - including the nearby Tesco Park Pointe.

tesco should take them too. I got ones only for use in the new lidl and tesco accept them.

Tesco also has a deal of spending 50 and getting 10 off the next shop. Not sure if this is still going now, it was only in tescos near the new lidl. If you spend 60 you could use the lidl/aldi voucher and get another 10euro voucher.

I'd say Tesco accepting their vouchers was a considerable factor in them deciding not to issue spend & save vouchers in the run-up to this Christmas. Therefore a victory for Tesco.

I was thinking it was doing heavy damage to Tesco profits as the majority of weeks the vouchers ran around Christmas Tesco were doing big loss leading alcohol deals. I suppose if people are doing a full weekly shop and decide to go to Tesco to use the voucher the overall value of the trolley will result in a break even or modest profit for Tesco but where you had people buying only their alcohol with the vouchers that had to be a complete loss.

they sell alcohol at a loss?

Tesco certainly sell an own brand vodka at a loss, I worked it out as a 61cent loss, and that assumes they get it for free and have no overheads included in the price.

Lots presume the likes of guinness or heineken are below cost, as they believe the whinging publicans who take the public for fools. I have seen no clear proof of this. Beer is cheap to produce and I would be pretty sure its the breweries supplying it cheaply rather than tesco buying at the same price and selling for less than half price, by the pallet.

Grolsch was 5% and 500mlx24 cans were 20euro. That is cheap. The duty on that is 13.53, the VAT is 3.74. So 17.27 in total so you cannot be certain it is below cost, but it is certainly very little profit if any. If using vouchers it would be below cost.

I already explained one way to stop them.

I had more tesco vouchers than I could use over christmas. I got lidl ones in the door which could be used there, and my local tesco were giving out 2 more vouchers each time I used one. My lidl vouchers also came with a mini lidl card to be scanned in one specific shop. This gave you free items if you spent over 30euro and some other rewards.

So this is another way lidl/aldi can prevent tesco using them.

people I know living near the new store did not get lidl vouchers, A few people several miles away did. All mine were used in tesco and they definitely made a loss on me.
