I have a Mac Air and a 32 inch LG TV. Can I stream TV (iPlayer, footy streams) and watch movies (via VLC player) on my TV? I don't want to connect a HDMI cable from my Mac to TV.

I've heard of Air Play and Chromecast but am not sure if they are what I' looking for.

So does the Apple TV let me mirror my Mac Air screen on my TV, wirelessly? I'm not talking Netflix here, I'm talking about playing my own torrented movies, and football streams, etc.

How old is your Mac? Needs to be one of the following:

    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)

Doesn't have to be one of the above I'm using a 3rd party app called air parrot to airplay my 2007 MacBook to my Apple TV

Yes you can just have the matches playing in safari then airplay to the apple tv.
    I do it myself

Great. Can you watch movies you have downloaded (not iTunes) on your TV?

Am I right in saying anything I have on my Mac screen can be mirrored on my TV? Websites, porn, footy, pics, word documents.. everything? I could in effect, use my TV as a large external monitor?

Are there any limitations to this?

AirPlay mirroring does just that - mirrors your entire display on your TV.
