Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Here is a template email that can be sentDear duly elected representative of the peoples of Ireland,
I write to you today to call your attention to a matter of great importance and urgency to our nation. Before the months end, Minister of State for Enterprise Seán Sherlock is to publish an “order” which is understood to allow copyright holders to demand the censorship of Irish citizens access an open and democratic Internet.
The Internet represents the single most important economic, social, and cultural communications tool since mankind spoke his first words. The Internet’s ability to promote the free exchange of artistic expression and encourage the discussion of revolutionary ideas such as democracy makes it to the modern world, what roads were to the Romans. The Internet is the road upon which we and our children and our children’s children will prosper. Any attempt at limiting its efficacy, at censoring the free exchange of ideas and expression should be considered an attack on our liberties and our future prosperity, I hope you’ll agree. Whether you recognise it or not, your constituents certainly do and I am in no doubt that they will make you aware of this fact in the coming days.
The Internet, spurred on by the incredible wealth of human talent on the Island of Ireland, promotes and takes an active role in the development of technologies of global significance. Its potential positive impact on our Island has yet to be fully realised; we are only now beginning to reap the rewards of our earlier labours of investing in resilient and wide spread broadband to the nation and other investments.
Yahoo!, Twitter, Facebook, Google, AOL, FourSquare, LinkedIn, PayPal, Zynga, and many more US based companies came out to protest against similar legislation in their country (SOPA/PIPA) which aimed at addressing copyright holders concerns, by censoring the Internet. These companies and those much like them are the future lifeblood of Ireland’s knowledge economy. To believe we can summarily enact legislation that will censor the Internet and not severely detriment our economy and our democratic rights is foolhardy to say the least.
The means by which this legislation is proposed to work will not achieve its intended result of protecting the rights of copyright holders. Infringing sites will still be accessible by even the most minimally technologically literate persons. This legislation serves only to erode our rights and discourage international investment.
If we continue to let our rights be eroded at the whims of corporations, which place pressure on our leaders to create legislation that chips away at our ability to freely express ourselves, we will fade into insignificance on the world stage and we will have squandered the enormous potential that we, as a nation striving for a knowledge economy, have worked so hard to achieve.
On the 11th of January, The European Commission recognised that the Internet “has enormous potential for boosting growth and creating jobs.” and that 20-25% of new jobs could come from growth in this area. Growth which will not be possible if the policies in place are more harmful than they are productive.
I ask, with all due respect, please do not let this legislation pass.
Yours sincerely,
A technologically literate voter

Any reply worth mentioning? Were they both .... "we'll look into that" crap or do either of them have any substance?0 -
Nah, they were both "we will look into it". I think they will only listen if enough people email and phone them. Plus we need to get the media to cover it and we need to sign the petitions and get the word out to as much people as possible.0

Here is a template email that can be sent to all Irish MEP'sDear Member of the Development Committee,
Today, you will hold a first exchange of views on the draft opinion report presented by Mr. Jan Zahradil on ACTA. We write to you to express grave concerns regarding the substance of this draft report.
Many crucial issues raised by ACTA are completely overlooked. In particular, the fact that its negotiators purposefully chose to bypass international forums, such as WTO and WIPO. Last year, leaked US diplomatic cables showed that from the beginning, ACTA was designed to be imposed on developing countries, while excluding them of the negotiation process.[1] This all the more shocking that many NGOs such as Oxfam, Doctors Without Borders and Health Action International have shown that ACTA would have negative consequences on the legitimate trade of generic medicines.[2]
Moreover, several advocacy groups also stress that ACTA's digital chapter will export to developing countries several civil and criminal measures to fight the sharing of online culture. ACTA would provide the legal justification for measures such as those proposed in the extremist copyright bills discussed by the US Congress (known as “PIPA” and “SOPA”). Though these US bills have been shelved after huge online protests, ACTA would pave the way for similar extra-judicial measures undermining freedom of speech online and innovation in the digital economy. It would have dramatic consequences, especially in countries that don't have the same fundamental rights protections as the EU. [3]
Finally, ACTA has absolutely no democratic legitimacy. Indeed, it was drafted by a small group of unelected officials in charge of promoting the interests of rights holders in their respective countries — not by legitimate democratic representatives. And now, Members of the European Parliament are asked to approve these new criminal sanctions without the possibility to amend them. If ACTA were to be ratified in Europe, it would undermine the very democratic values on which the Union was founded.
As protectors of the public interest, we trust that you will fully consider these important issues, and amend the draft report to that effect.
Sincerely,0 -

Google Ireland has been contacted and they are being considerably quiet considering the likeness, if not worse, than it's US counterpart.
I really hope that the EU takes a case against the state for breach of EU's human rights court ruling.0 -

Hi
Just received this email back from martin.ferris@oireachtas.ie I'm guessing everyone that emailed has received the same email but thought i should post it.
For immediate release, Wednesday, January 25
Ferris calls for full debate and vote on internet legislation
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Communications, Martin Ferris TD has called on the Government to have a full debate in the Dáil on measures governing access to the internet. He was responding to an interview with the Minister responsible Seán Sherlock yesterday which Deputy Ferris said leaves many questions to be answered regarding the implications of the legislation.
Deputy Ferris said: “While the Minister is claiming that he needs to act in order to reflect both a recent Court judgement and two EU directives, he appears to be pretty vague regarding the implications of what he is proposing. Experts in the field are taking a diametrically opposed view to that of the Minister.
“There is understandable fear among both commercial and private users of the internet that this will leave the door open to actions that would severely restrict access to information if copyright holders can secure orders preventing it being made available.
“That would not only represent a significant attack on individual freedom but also a threat to a healthy sector of the Irish economy which has attracted major international players to locate here.
“In the interests of teasing all of this out I am calling on the Government to facilitate a debate and to present legislation that will require approval by the Oireachtas prior to any enactment. That would allow a full debate with meaningful inputs from all interested parties.”

What difference will spamming their email accounts make?0
-
Dear ******,
Thank you for your email outlining your opposition to ACTA. I will bring the points and concerns you have raised to the attention of Mr Aylward.
As you may be aware the European Commission has asked the European Council to authorise the signature for ACTA and then the European Parliament will be officially asked for consent. As ACTA is a mixed agreement - partly competence of the Member States - ratifications by national parliaments, including Ireland, will be required as well.
The European Parliament Committees that are responsible for this file - DEVE, INTA (Internal Market) and JURI (Legal Affairs) have already began preparatory work and have asked the Parliament legal service for opinion. We have been informed that the JURI Committee is currently checking the compatibility of ACTA with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
The was concern among MEPs regarding the secrecy of the negotiations surrounding ACTA and there have been several Parliamentary questions on this issue, mostly calling for publication of the documents from negotiations.
Mr Aylward is not a member of the committees responsible for ACTA but his ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) colleagues in these Committees have been to the forefront in asking for increased transparency and called for the European Commission to present all discussion documents, relevant studies and impact assessments on ACTA.
At present, clarification is still needed on the compatibility of ACTA with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights before a final position is taken. The MEPs are awaiting this and the feedback of their colleagues working directly on this file. Mr Aylward has received several emails from constituents concerned about the impact of this agreement on their livelihoods and access to information and will take these views into consideration ahead of full Plenary vote.
I trust this information will be of interest to you.
Yours sincerely,

Endakenny.com has been defaced with a ****ing hilarious fake site.
Just a year and a week or so since the last fine gael pwnage... They need better web app coders IMHO.
Also, if LOADS of people email ALL of them, they WILL get the message.
I am sending sherlock 3 to 5 individual emails/day + tweeting at him non stop until he gives me a personal response. Others should do the same.
Any other people I should be emailing, or calling on the phone? May stack up some Skype credit.
Or we could just text them... over9000 times... (JOKING!)0 -
Email sent off to all of them anyway. Just standard replies so far and saying they will get back to me.0

I don't agree with what they've done but it has brought the matter into the public eye.
Keep spreading the message. You only have to email the politicians once. Repeatedly emailing them would be classed as spamming and is unlikely to get the desired result. Just ask everyone you know to also send an email, phone them, sign the petition, and get the word out to as many people as possible. If they see that alot of people are against this they will have to back down.0 -
endakenny.com was always a joke site, not a defacement.
Also how many web spiders are gonna crawl this thread and add all those email addresses to their spam target?

Hi
Its a bit insignificant but every little helps!
Ive created a QR code linked to the stopsopaireland.com website

I followed that link to the Irish embassy in japan. I had no idea what to write and the box is rather small so I just put in the following
We need to stop the signing of the ACTA aggreement as they go against our sovereign rights. We should not be dictated as to how we utilise the Internet by another country. You only have to look at the SOPA/PIPA debacle of late to see that nobody wants these kinds of short-sighted restrictions. Please oppose this on behalf of the Irish people. Regards.0 -

And here is the attachment:
PRESS RELEASE
DEPUTY Tom Barry has urged serious caution in relation to proposals to introduce a Statutory Instrument to allow the courts to block access to websites suspected of infringing copyright.
“While I have not seen the specific text of this proposed order yet; I would like to put on record my considerable concerns at any threat to restrict personal freedom in relation to freedom of expression or access to information on the Internet. In addition, I also think the proposal raises serious concerns about protection for Internet users.
“In the case that has led to this proposal, Mr. Justice Charleton said that existing legislation constrained the judiciary from granting injunctions to prevent infringement of copyright against Information Service Providers. However, I feel we should be reluctant to pre-empt criminal activity. We already have sufficient law to allow prosecution for copyright infringement if and when it does occur. I am fearful of the consequences of introducing preventative legislation that may impact on personal freedoms.
“If we are to tackle the suggested flaws in the existing Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 we must examine in detail the potential implications of handing control of the monitoring of Information Service Providers over to the judiciary. There are some extremely large corporations who would welcome this legislation or something like it; but there are even more organisations - upon whom we depend for a great deal of employment and potential future growth - who are vehemently opposed.
“We must consider the stringent opposition to this kind of restrictive and legislative Internet control from companies like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, EBay, Linkedin, AOL and Twitter – amongst others – who represent so much promise for Irish employment and innovation into the future. The very nature of the Internet means that inadvertent copyright breaches are almost inevitable – but we already have legislation to deal with these breaches after they happen. Allowing for the blocking of any website where infringements occur seems like an extreme and counter-productive response.
“Another serious consideration relates to the recent decision by the European Court of Justice ruling that Internet access is a human right and that EU law precludes injunctions being taken against ISPs. The position of the European Court of Justice is very clear – the matter can be taken to the courts after the holders of intellectual-property rights have had their rights infringed. But the Court categorically underlined the prohibition of the monitoring of information transmitted on ISP networks.
“The key word in Mr. Justice Charleton’s judgement is ‘prevent’. I do not, at this stage, believe that it is possible to ‘prevent’ the offending activity without putting personal freedoms and human rights, as clarified now at EU level, in danger. I await the final wording of the proposed Statutory Instrument but the Internet Industry must be protected. I believe it is vital to our future and that the core principle of the Internet - the principle of freedom of access to information - must be protected.”

As both a staunch supporter of Fine Gael and the protest movement against ACTA it pains me to post this. I know firstly that there is a massive chance that this bill will get passed if we don't all unite and put pressure on the right people in our government. I also know that for the most part Fine Gael have the Irish people's best interests at heart (I'm not here to debate politics, so please don't focus on that). I'm posting because I want to preserve the current freedoms in which we all enjoy online. As a close friend to the FG party I regretfully give you the names and numbers of the TD's in which I believe your calls and emails will most influence. Well basically any form of protest only gets about 1/2 days of publicity. Look at the student protests. Regardless of protests, letter and e mail campaigns the grant is still reduced significently every couple of months.0
