So would you rather they played just the old songs and became a tribute band of themselves? Yes, you might like the older stuff, but guess what? Its the band who wrote the new stuff, not the new fans, and they're probably excited to play more relatively new material rather than hashing out the same old tunes time and again with only a token new one thrown in.

I never said I want them to just play the old stuff, I said it would be nice if they had more variation in the set. I enjoy some the new stuff and I'm always up for hearing newer stuff live but the key is variation, and just not churning out the same set every night which is what they've been doing since the new album

It's all about balance, they have older stuff they've never played live and some of the newer stuff that also hasn't been played yet either, so it would be nice to see some chopping and changing

No worries, you just came off as one of those over-protective fans who don't want anyone to like their band, or who feels like new fans aren't real fans.

I can see you point though, for example take Metallica and Pearl Jam, both two excellent bands who have been around for donkeys years. Now in the case of Metallica, their set is pretty much set in stone, and while they might rotate two songs on a set-to-set basis, you can pretty easily work out what they're going to play at which set on the tour after they've got a couple of shows under their belt. Pearl Jam, on the other hand, play nearly a completely different set each night, and in fact only write the set on the day of the show itself. I much prefer this approach, it means every time you see them, there'll be a few "surprise" songs, but also, they are much more relaxed and free in their playing of the songs, it's not a regimented two hour slot that they've been going though every day for the last 9 months. It leads to the band themselves being much more relaxed looking and they seem to enjoy it more, hence giving the crowd a better experience.

For the black keys though, maybe they're just not mad on the older stuff they've never played, or feel it doesn't work live (it happens). I can see where you're coming from, but I still think you shouldn't whinge about them playing new stuff, just be thankful that there's still amazing musicians out there making whopper music, and we get to see them in a few weeks time :D

I personally enjoy all of their songs. Their older works being my favorite. In particular "Keep Me" And the Album Rubber factory.

I have only been listening to them since before Christmas but they have quickly became my favorite artists. On to the point, I agree with the above, I don't mind new fans or "One song fans" But I do mind them influencing what is being played too much, I.e. no variance, only the newer works being played, and then when the older songs are being played, they talk. That ruins it for everyone else. Anyway, I'll get to see pleanty if I'm going to Tenants and then the 02 the next day!

Seeing as How we're all about the older stuff in this thread, what album would be recommended for someone unfamiliar with it? I currently have Brothers, El Camino and Attack & Release.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Rubber Factory is superb. Songs like Stack Shot Billy and 10 AM Automatic are amoung their best songs.

That's a pity, I wouldn't mind seeing some variety. Will still enjoy it though!

To be honest I first heard of them because of Lonely Boy but having listened to Brothers and Attack and Release countless times at this stage I think they're old stuff is much better. Still working my way back tough. Its a shame it probably wont be played at the gig.

Anyone know the timing for this? It says doors at 6.30pm on Tickets but does anyone know the actual times of support act and then the Black Keys?

Yeah, wondering about this as well

Also, I presume since this is their own headline gig they'll play more than the 10-15ish songs they've played the festival circuit. Their gig in Toronto was about 20 songs according to this:

Seen them last night and thought they were a bit...dull really. I'd like to see them at a smaller indoor venue though, not sure the great outdoors is for them.

Band of skulls are on at eight so you'll be grand, I'd say the black keys will be on around nine fifteen or half but that's just a guess.

9:15 is when black keys are on, only know as a mate who works for aiken just gave me tickets there, says she has a fair few to give away to mates as its a poor seller, should be a good show anyways

I didn't think Aiken were promoting this gig?

I'd say some of the seats might be curtained off though alright, although MCD said there are only limited tickets left. TM website only throwing tickets up in block N which is right at the back.

Savage gig. They gave it way more socks than last time I saw them, and the crowd was fantastic. Right up the front, and everyone was pogoing, moshing and singing along.

Managed to get a video of Little Black Submarines. I still can't feel my legs after this gig.

Yea great gig, absolutely brilliant setlist. Patrick Carney on the drums was outstanding

Anyone know if it was a sell-out in the end?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,231 ✭✭✭mutley18

There was some seats at the side at the back and in the backrow but apart from that it looked packed.

Definitely the most obnoxious crowd I've been in (never thought in a million years I'd feel out of place wearing a Rory Gallagher shirt to a Black Keys gig, but I did last night for sure), but damn they were good.

I was really excited to see Band of Skulls, and they ****ing killed it. I was a little bit scared the Black Keys would disappoint me after that, but they didn't. Pat was really beating the **** out of those drums.

They somehow sound more powerful when it's just the two of them, and it would've been cool to hear a few more older songs. Ending with "I got mine" was a good choice though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭Dubhthamlacht

I thought The Black Keys were good (third time seeing them) but I honestly thought they played better in Tripod 2 years ago; now that was a fantastic gig. Stand out songs on the night, for me, were Gold on the Ceiling, I Got Mine, Your Touch, Ten Cent Pistol. Bit disappointed nothing from Rubber Factory was played.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭Martyn1989

I was near the back standing and I have to say the sound was woeful, one of the quietest gigs Ive ever been to. For the whole gig there was a steady stream of people going to the bar/smoking area (which was packed) and the babble of conversation could be heard even during the louder parts. Quite a number of people seemed to be leaving early also. I thought the Black Keys played very well and it was a great setlist but the gig as a whole was a bit of a let down from where we were. A shame as I was really looking forward to it :(
