Liberty Global Swallows Another European Cable Operator

On Monday January 27, 2014; Liberty Global (LGI) announced its plans to acquire Ziggo N.V. in a transaction valued at $13.7 billion. This follows its acquisition of Virgin Media announced a year ago, which propelled LGI into the second largest cable MSO in the world. The acquisition of the Netherland’s largest cable operator makes it a formidable competitor to KPN within the Netherlands; but the more important impact is its continued network upgrades across the continent to drive faster speeds which are putting further pressure on Telcos to meet or beat these speeds in many markets. Although a number of incumbent Telcos are planning network upgrades, the time to act is now and the question is whether VDSL2 Vectoring will be enough to remain competitive against speeds exceeding 150Mbps in many markets.
