Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The latest Collins Comprehensive Road Atlas of Ireland (April 2009) shows all open motorways, and everything that's under construction too (bar the N18 G-C scheme). It's worth picking up as a collectors item.

As promised I have some pictures.

These are from near the R348 East of Athenry. Got some from down on the mainline and some from up on the embankment that the R348 will climb in order to go over the M6 on an overbridge. Click for full size image

    Galway-Ballinasloe scheme.

    R348 underbridge West of Athenry:
    th_P1010560.jpg th_P1010561.jpg

Looking West. Notice the absence of any sort of a railway underbridge structure (behind the steel fence in these pics is the Galway-Athenry railway line):

All are looking East from the N6 Dual Carriageway (Doughiska terminus of the M6):

A bit off topic but 2 photos of the N6 Dual Carriageway East/Southbound at Doughiska near where the M6 will terminate:
    th_P1010523.jpg th_P1010524.jpg

And a couple of photos of the N6 Quincentennial Bridge (the bridge actually has several names. I don't know which is correct but this is my preferred one) over the River Corrib in Galway. Usually if we get a hot summer me and my mates will jump off the Bridge and go swimming - didn't get good weather at all last summer; hopefully it'll be better this year. It doesn't look that high in the photos but, trust me, it seems very high when you're up there!

Does anyone know what building a road bridge over a railway line involves? Does it involve a closure of the line for any amount of time or can they do it without any closures?

The lack of progress on the M6 bridge over the the Galway-Athenry railway line is really annoying me. The R348 runs parallel to the railway line and it's bridge was done 6 or 7 months ago.

They have the necessary earthwork done and from what I can see they have some of the materials for the bridge structure ready and waiting on the site. I'd love to know what the hold up is.

I'm beginning to think that Irish Rail are maybe dragging their heels a bit on the issue. Wouldn't be surprised because this piece of road infrastructure will inevitably have a negative impact on their intercity and commuter passenger numbers.

Depends on the bridge type - the M4 Celbridge West interchange required a D2AP bridge built over the Maynooth line, only required overnight closures.... until it fell down on to the line during construction!

Snap KevR. I was down around Esker/Kiltulla/Athenry yesterday aswell. Didn't have much time for pics unfortunately but had a good look around.

    IMAG0205.jpg_595.jpg
    IMAG0206.jpg_595.jpg
    IMAG0207.jpg_595.jpg

Have to say the site in general is very untidy around there. Much better around Ballinasloe.
About the railway bridges, there are 3 in total to be built and none of them have started yet. Designs still being finalised with IE.
Consultations are still ongoing with Irish Rail for the construction of
three railway bridges. The first of these is the ST7 Ballygaurraun Overbridge
which will carry the new N6 over the Dublin/Galway rail line. The new road
will pass over Graigabbey River, continuing until
it meets with the second railway bridge, ST12
Farranablake Overbridge, and finally the third,
ST42 Newford Rail Overbridge, each of which
will carry the new motorway over the Athenry/
Limerick rail line. There is a maximum of 45
people scheduled to be working on each railway
    bridge simultaneously; inclusive of inspectors
    and health and safety personnel.

It looks like this is going to be the official version of the tie-in
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=59295412&postcount=137

They have now broken through the median there on the bypass. I would imagine that it's only a matter of days until the diversion begins so they can do the tie in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,779 ✭✭✭Carawaystick

the median will need to be filled and surfaced first, dunno if there is a need for settling before traffic goes on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭KevR

Will probably only be a temporary surface. Can't see them putting a proper one down only to tear it back up again when the median is re-closed

Don't think a temp surface will cut it there with the amount of traffic that will be using it. It'll be in use for 3/4 months won't it?

Have they finished all the works on the Tuam road where they had the temp lights and the Daneshill rab? Can't see them opening the diversion until that work is complete.

The opening was started early last week, perhaps waiting for other works to finish before completing this temporary road.

I believe that the Tuam road past the eastbound LILO will be closed while a new roundabout is constructed and all traffic will be diverted onto the old Tuam road that runs parallel to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,779 ✭✭✭Carawaystick

Oh yeah, there was a stop/go traffic light system on the bridge over the N6 on Easter Monday, the one between this new opening and the western end of the dual carriageway. dunno if that's related to the M6 works.

Also something that has been bugging me. Going west approaching the new RAB at the western end of the Athlone bypass, about 50m before the rab there's a right turn slip lane for access. Why not direct all local access around the RAB and back the 50m to left turn in instead of crossing????

Yeah! would have made sense, but was only a temporary situation anyway - in a few days time they'll have their own dedicated access from the roundabout.

That was part of the reconstruction of the Tuam road, why didn't they wait 'till the road was closed before doing this work?

Google earth updated their shots for East Galway (long overdue) The earthworks are apparent on the Galway Balinasloe scheme.

Have to say East Galway is horrid of sprawl.

Going Westbound yesterday evening there was a VMS saying the Tuam Road exit would be closed Wednesday 15th (Today).

About time! Not sure when those shots were taken but I would say at least a year ago due to the lack of any sort of underbridge at Garraun North.

Not sure that's correct, I think they mean that the slip road will become the mainline as part of the diversion.

The median was tarmaced this morning, but there are still no white lines on the link road.

I hope not. It looks incomplete at the moment. Would say it wont be changed until next week at earliest. Work left to be done at the traffic lights, Central Mediam and as DB mentions above, the white lines on the road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭KevR

I'll have a look at the sign on the way home today (if it's still there). Maybe I read it wrong but I'm almost certain that's what it said.

Could it have been that they needed to close the Tuam Road exit today to carry out some work? Rather than it meaning the diversion was coming into effect from today?

    **Note to self**
Avoid the massive pothole on the bridge (Westbound lane) in Ballinasloe town. Went into yesterday and a few times last week. It's bad enough to possibly cause damage to cars. It's difficult to avoid because the bridge is quite narrow and there are always cars coming in the opposite direction so it doesn't leave much room to avoid it.

Incidentally who would be responsible for filling in this pothole? Would it be the NRA because it's a National Primary Route (N6) or the County Council? I might get in touch with whoever has the responsibility for it.

Thought they filled that late last week.
Some serious problems with that bridge and nothing can be done without serious disruption. They're hoping it holds out until the motorway is finished.

I went into that pothole last Thursday and again yesterday. Managed to avoid it today luckily!

Re: The VMS at the Tuam Rd exit of the Athlone Bypass:

The sign was still there this evening saying Tuam Rd exit closed on Wednesday 15th (today) but from what I could see the exit was still open; but with a lot of work taking place on it.

Hmm not sure what the status is on the west side of the Athlone bypass, might be worth keeping an ear on i105-107 as the DJs there have to use the road to get to work so they might be able to tell you what's what.
In other news there appears to be work on a slip through side road on the Portumna road in Ballinasloe. I believe this will be a foot bridge only with traffic on the (by then) old N6 driving past Texoil to get to the new RAB and bridge to drive towards Eyrecourt/Portumna

If it's this evening/tonight you mean then that was just council workers. No connection to motorway works.

On Athlone Bypass, the junction sign before the Tuam exit going Westbound had the straight ahead bit covered over today. Eastbound Tuam exit sign was not covered at all this evening but I'm sure it will be done shortly - they might just remove the Eastbound one altogether though.

Possibly an indication that the diversion will start over the weekend or on Monday?

They seem to be working long hours during the week on both M6 schemes from what I can see. On the Galway-Ballinasloe they're working Saturdays also, not sure about Ballinasloe-Athlone. Weather has been decent so far this year, hopefully we'll get a lot more of it during the summer.

All Eastbound traffic would have to turn right at the Summerhill roundabout anyway so won't pass that sign, as you say it'll probably be removed.

Makes it even more frustrating that Google Maps and Yahoo Maps are so out of date when printed maps are more up to date.

I'm glad they only have the relevant toll sections in red, I was thinking they'd be tempted just to mark the whole thing as a toll route so as not to confuse tourists. But this system is far better I think.

    haha thats good

They certainly seem to be the best updated, is Crusheen - Gort on there?

www.openstreetmap.org is easily the best of the online mapping things for the motorways, not so much for roads inbetween cos they're not mapped yet. The cities are now as good if not better than the other mapping.

Edit; Actually Collins are looking good - if you check it out, the motorway M7 under construction is marked in blue, but the N6 Athlone - Ballinasloe under construction is in RED, maybe as it hasnt been redesignated yet. If so, they're on the ball.

but the Athone to Ballinasloe is a free section, only west of BSLoe to Galway is tolled

but the Athone to Ballinasloe is a free section, only west of BSLoe to Galway is tolled
The section from Athlone to B'sloe is marked red because it's not clear it will be a motorway yet as the redesignation hasn't gone through. Blunt Guy is refering to the thin red 'central reserve' shown on the M4/M6 toll section. A lot of maps (including the AA) fcuk this up on the M1 motorway and show much larger stretches as being under toll than are in reality. This Collins map really does look to be the most accurate I've seen. Might get one.

I've posted more images from the Collins atlas on the general M8 thread over on the Infrastructure forum.

It has ommitted the N18 G-C scheme, and it has marked all of the Dublin to Waterford interurban as a motorway; this is technically wrong at the moment, but it will almost certainly be a motorway when tranche 2 of the redesignations go through.

    See: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Comprehensive-Road-Atlas-Ireland/dp/0007312814/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1

I picked it up as a general atlas, but also as a collectors item.

Hm. It looks like one of the builders of the M8 M-F scheme is a contributor to openstreetmap: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=52.2461&lon=-8.2554&zoom=14&layers=B000FTF

Is it possible for the openstreetmappers here to indicate a toll section similarly to how Collins have done it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,082 ✭✭✭Chris_533976

Looks to me like someones been experimenting with mapping or has been taking a gawk off overbridges :D

You can add the word 'Toll' to a particular node in OSM, but I dont think theres a specific way for a marked toll road, unless you split the road and call the road "M8 (Toll)". Horrifying as that is, it might be the only way to make it visible.

No change to traffic flow this morning but still a lot of activity. It must be fairly imminent..

Also, yesterday when I passed over the Athlone-Ballinasloe M6 on the N6 overbridge (which is still not fully open btw) they were laying another layer of surface on the M6. I only caught a glimpse of it as I passed; traffic was heavy and there was nowhere to safely pull in.

I know this has probably been posted elsewhere but how many layers go on? And when does the concrete barrier usually get installed - is it before or after the final layer?

    From AA Roadwatch:
*N6/WESTMEATH* A temporary diversion will be in place later today on the N6 Dublin/ Galway Rd, for 1.5kms just west of Athlone near Summerhil, from 7pm until 21st June (approx). This diversion will affect traffic in both directions; delays should be expected on the N6 and also in the surrounding area.

    Westmeath? :D

Won't have to take the diversion on the way home from work this evening because it's only starting at 7pm but will have to take it in the morning.

June 21st approx? Surely once the diversion is finished, the Athlone-Ballinasloe motorway will have to be open. Can't see how the diversion could no longer be in place and the motorway not open once they start the tie in.

That new roundabout on the Eastern side of Ballinasloe has the County Galway crest on its signs. Roscommon doesn't even exist as far as the contractors and AA Roadwatch are concerned haha.

The NRA has Start County and End County as Roscommon though on their website for the Athlone-Ballinasloe scheme.
