Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Advice on Injury Diagnosis

I'll start this thread by stating that I'm not necessarily looking for a diagnosis over the internet - I'm passed that stage ;) - but rather I'm looking for advice on who I should go to for a diagnosis.

I have had a pain in my foot for the past number of weeks. I noticed on my first few runs after completing the Dublin Marathon. I don't recall anything during the marathon that caused the injury so not sure if it's from that or something else.

Basically it's a pain that runs on the inside of the foot and up to the top of the foot. It's really sore when I press against it and is now a constant dull pain (it's getting worse and now I'm at the point where I think I need to stop and rest it). There is a slight swelling there as well but not so much as to prevent me putting on shoes etc

I'm wondering is a doctor or physio the best person to go to or based on some internet diagnosis of a potential stress fracture am i better off going to A&E (or something like VHI Swiftcare)?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Physio definitely.
If you give your general location, someone can hopefully point you to a physio with a good reputation. You essential want to see someone with a background in running specific injuries.

I'm based just outside Cork city.

Can a physio refer you for an x-ray or mri?

Impossible to say really as we have no idea what injury is.
50/50 that one will send you to the other, not much a GP can do for something like that other than send you for a scan.

Physio's don't refer for MRI/Xray - if you go to GP, unless you're in agony, it's unlikely they'll send you to A&E they likely give you a referral letter for the outpatient dept in your local hospital.

edit: not sure how it works in private hospitals etc...physios may be able to order the xray/mri there

Interesting. Where is your physio? This is bizarre to me? HSE hospitals only take GP referrals..any hospital I've worked in is GP referrals only.
A physio needs to get a doctor to order anything like that in a hospital environment.

The A & E is in Smithfield and is part of the Mater hospital, they took a referral letter from my physio and in fact told me they would take either GP or Physio. It meant I didn't have to pay the e100 charge and they sent me for a scan.

Edit, to clarify, a doctor in the A&E ordered the scan but I didn't need to go through my gp to get it.

Have worked in the mater and never saw that. May be a new thing. Mater website still only refers to gp referrals
Never understood why physio referrals were not taken tbh

See my edit above - yeah it was very convenient tbh, if id had to go to my gp just for a referral when id already paid a physio id have been very pissed off!
