Making his first appearance in Dublin this Easter Sunday is Benji B of 1 Xtra. Best known as presenter of the definitive left field radio show touching on everything from garage to Brazilian funk in the vein of his mentor Gilles Peterson. From playing the sax at 7 to spinning in various clubs around London by the age of 16 Benji B linked up with Gilles at a precociously young age when he was at Kiss FM and was producing his Worldwide show from the age of 16. Diversifying the mix slightly the pairs musical understanding went from strength to strength, and when the show moved from Kiss FM to BBC Radio 1, Benji became the youngest ever producer to be making shows for the national station. He broke out on his own when the Beebs internet black music station came online in 2003 where his Deviation show is an essential listen for anyone with an interest in past, present or future beats! In London he has played residencies at the Blue Note, Plastic People, Bar Rumba and Ministry of Sound to name just a few, and ran a monthly residency with Gilles Peterson at Cargo.

"Westwood, Matt Black, Norman, Rodigan, Coldcut, Fabio, Paul Trouble, Gilles... I was checking all of these shows religiously." A Typical 80s adolescence in the hayday of UK hip hop and soundsystems Benj I B represents the London sound to the fullest. By the time he finished school he was the envy of his classmates - working on the radio all weekend, clubbing and DJ'ing during the week unknown to his folks! His radio shows and DJ sets blend tunes from various genres of underground soul music – broken beats, hip-hop, house, garage, jazz, soul or Detroit techno which may not be to everyone’s taste but there is something uniquely London about it.

Whether in the backroom for a party session - or the main room for an all-out dance music journey – Benji B has developed a reputation as the man who plays across the board and always delivers quality DJ sets.

Benji B alongside DJ Tu-ki play Ri Ra/The Globe Easter Sunday April 8th. Doors from 11.30pm €7 pre 12/€10 after.
