Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone bothered getting any of these or doing anything cool with them? Come to think of it, has anyone even turned nfc on in their device yet? I don't think I have on my One X. Gonna pick up a few tags seeing as they're so cheap

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-NFC-Smart-Tags-Sticker-A-dhesive-Label-13-56MHz-ISO14443A-Mifare1k-S50-MF1-/120934052597?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c283b32f5#ht_1461wt_952

Would love to think of some cool stuff to do with them, definitely going to have one in my toilet that opens the browser and launches a porn website, if only for the laugh. :p Would be useful in a hotel or cafe or something for setting up wifi for visitors as well. They could just tap their phone and get on the network straight away without fiddling with the security code etc. Probably put one in work that turns the phone on silent and turns off wifi etc. Can't really think of much else. Is there anywhere in Ireland that uses NFC for anything?

I have 1 in work for my work profile settings (volume off, vibrate on etc)
1 in my car holder for car mode and change a couple settings
1 for leaving the house & 1 on my bedside table too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭elderlemon

Guy on another forum uses one by his bed and when he puts the phone there it switches off data etc and enables the night clock.

Has another one in the car and when he sticks the phone in the holder it switches on BT, connects to the car, turns the brightness up full etc.

There's an app in the market that allows the phone to respond to the tags.

    Chinholio beat me to it.

I have similar ones set up.. i think i actually got the ones off ebay on your recommendation!

Quick question - How do you find NFC being constantly on affects your battery? I think the chips kind of defeat the purpose if i have to toggle NFC to be on before scanning (Not a major deal as i have a widget with it there on my homescreen) but just wondering since you must have it on all the time with the range of places you have it whether you notice it draining the battery

Havent noticed a thing tbh. Its effect is miniscule from what I can see. Youd probably waste more battery from the screen when changing all the settings :pac:

you stick one of these to your phone and then in various places that you go often. when you go to these places the one on your phone can be designed to do a certain thing etc?

You dont stick them to your phone, the chip is built in. You can then buy blank ones to program for certain tasks when your phone taps them.

    ^This.

For example, I have one on the top right corner of my monitor, and when I tap it it activates the program I use to sync files over to my phone etc(MyPhoneExplorer 10/10 btw). Pretty handy. Others put them in the car on the back of the dock to activate navigation. I also have one tied to the charger cable to turn on wifi but I dont bother with it now cause my wifi is set to never sleep so it burns charge fast enough and I have AYCE 3G.

i feel like im missing something very obvious here, every phone has a "nfc" chip built in or just particular ones?

Some newer ones (except in places like Japan where mobile payments are common)
One X, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Nexus would be the main ones

Think a couple Nokias have it too

I got 5 tags today from airnfc, I'm going to use one in the car and one beside the bed, I use an app called NFC task launcher, it allows you to set two lists of commands and you toggle between them on the one tag,

You can get label ones for like €1 that you can then just stick to any holder you like.

Was just wondering the same thing. Are there "better" makes than others?

Also, how easy are they to program? Actually, how do you go about programming them?! :pac:

Some have larger memory so you can assign more tasks to them.

You use an app like NFC Task Launcher to assign activities to them

How do you reverse what a tag does
ie you have a tag in car, you configure NFC to turn on Blue Tooth, go into car mode and switch on GPS

When you leave the car, the phone is not in proximity to tag. Does moving away from tag, switch off, wifi, BT, exit car mode

Or do you need to manually switch off, wifi, BT, exit car mode

Depends on the App used, most nfc coding apps allow a tag on tag off like set of functions that would do what you describe

as in first tag does the 'on bits' second tag does the 'off bits'

    so yes.

I didn't realise you could tag on and tag off the same tag. That's handy alright.

So I might as well make the effort and get some now, can people recommend which ones to get? Is that link in the OP the best?

I bought these ones, seem to work perfectly with zero issues. Ive had them about 3 months

I want to see can I somehow get the phone to emulate a tag so that I can make a backup of the tags I need for other things (e.g. I can backup the tag to get into my apartment block).

Does anyone know if this is possible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭nedd

    Nice one, just ordered some.

Do I need an app to program the response to each tag? What app do people use?

This is probably possible, but it would be pretty poor from a security point of view if you were just able to do it yourself!

If you already have "tasker" then there's a plugin in the market that will trigger tasker on nfc changes.
NFC Task Launcher seems to be the best of them

Ordered the ones that Listermint recommended.

Think I'll only need 3 for day to day use. Wonder what mischief I can get upto with the spare 2....

Airnfc seem to be the only place in the country that sell the tags. I ordered 10 tags a couple of weeks ago and they came in 4 days.

I'm using the NFC TagWriter by NXP to program but I might start using NFC Task Launcher since they recently made it free.

Just a quick question for anyone with tags, how near do they work? Do you have to touch the phone off the tag?

Just about. Theyre designed for close proximity so its about an inch or so

I have a one x but not even used NFC or don't have reason to for the moment.

silly question maybe, but if you stick a tag to your car dock, wont it be constantly scanning the NFC tag since its in close proximity? I've never used NFC before so maybe its something obvious i'm missing.

No it reads only once, (entering the zone) and then you have to exit.

When you reenter the 'zone' it tags again (be it off or on depending on your settings)

But there is no constant 'in the zone' tagging.

    I will PM you now.

Need to find somebody else with NFC so I can try out Beam.

Also tempted to try and replicate my luas card xD

I don't think replicating RFID cards using NFC is possible. I'm open to correction here.

I guess what needs to happen is Leap to release an app that can recognise your phone (as a card) and you can just top it up?

Surely you can't just replicate them -otherwise NFC wouldn't be touted to replace chip + pin cards

You're right NFC runs at 15.37mhz where RFID runs at 125mhz

Well considering my XS can read my smartcard I would have to assume that the system is NFC based.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭Chet T16

RFID runs at 125kHz or 13.56MHz. The SIII will only read the 13.56MHz ones

OK, so some tags have arrived and before I start i have a question for people who have used them.

    Firstly can i re-write a tag?

Secondly i want to do the following:
Swipe Tag: Turn On Wifi, Turn Phone to Silent.
Swipe the Same Tag: Turn Off Wifi, turn phone off silent.

can I do this with one tag or do i need two tags? One for when i get into work, and one for when i leave work?
