Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Stone funny shape

I found this stone some years ago on a beach here in the South East.

I always thought the shape was interesting, it might be completely random natural, but I thought I would just show it here for opinions. It fits perfectly in the hand, like a tool, but I've never seen anything of the kind on here or online. Then again I have no clue.

It's a weird kind of stone that feels, weighs, and nearly sounds like metal. It doesn't feel heavy and dense like granite, say. If you clink it with a spoon it nearly sounds more like a metal. It looks like it's "melted" on the top, but underneath it looks more like it chipped off something.

So, is my stone just a stone ? Will I toss it or keep it ? :D

Only putting up one or two pics, but I have some more in my pix.ie album.

Judging by the number of views and no reply, I'm leaning towards just a stone... ? :D

I was on a beach in Sweden last week which had an old limestone kiln nearby. All the stones on the beach looked strange and had a metal sound like you describe. They were also whitish in colour. Maybe your stone did form naturally and whatever that metal sound is causes it to form in a strange shape?

    hhmmm interesting alright.
Lots of limestone kilns around co Waterford too.
And the copper down the coast a bit from where this was found.
Maybe you're right, maybe it's just the way that type of stone "chips".
I haven't really seen other ones like that on the beach though, I'd have to actively be on the look out I suppose.

Maudi, I've had it a few years, I like it, I think I will (keep it).
It would make a great carpet beater anyways. :pac:

At a push, I can use it as a mini shovel.

edit : the cone thingy in paleontology ? love it ! I'm clueless enough to get very excited at any fossil I find, no matter how ordinary. I wish I had spent a bit more time looking around at that place now, there might be more.

Don't throw that stone away just yet.
There is a chance, a slim chance that it might cause a bit of excitement in Irish archaeology.
I can't say much more at the moment.
