Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Noel Dempsey on Vincent Browne, Dublin Transport Plans

As has happened so many times before, our transport minister appeared on the national airwaves, was asked a series of unoriginal and uninspiring questions about transport in Dublin and responded with unoriginal and uninspiring answers. He stated several times that a combination of "Metro, Luas and buses" would solve Dublin's transport problems.

Slightly worrying was Dempsey's reassurance to the public that Metro North could be cancelled at any time. Seriously worrying is Dempsey's unwillingness to mention the interconnector unless directly questioned on it (which of course he wasn't).

Also worrying, his inability to articulate what the benefits of an integrated rail system would be. When questioned with the same old BS about the demand to travel from the airport to the city centre, he replied that the Metro would also be beneficial to commuters in Fingal. No mention of interchange with Drumcondra or the interconnector. Even when Browne said that not everyone commutes to the city centre, he didn't point out the interchanges possible, instead reiterating "buses, Luas and Metro".

This is really starting to get frustrating. If the Department cares about public perception of what is planned in Dublin, it needs to get network maps in its advertising. It needs to hammer home how frequent and reliable these services could be. It needs people to say "oh, that could be handy". How many people that live on the Maynooth line know how convenient (hopefully, but that's another issue) it will be for them to get the Metro to the airport? I'd hazard a guess at very few.

Furthermore, if the politicians won't promote the interconnector then Irish Rail need to do so themselves. It should be advertised to the hilt. Two DART lines, five minute frequencies etc. Again, route maps. Noone cares about this stuff because they don't know about this stuff. Irish Rail should not allow the government to sweep this under the carpet when times get tough. They should be shouting from the rooftops about it.

You're acting as though Dempsey is supposed to know what he's doing. Look at the bang up job he did in communications.

Only saw a few minutes of it (taped the rest) but that looked like a bizarre interview. The question were soft at best.

    - Why are you pushing the metro when the same job could be down with .... buses?

I thought he was going to say the same job could be done by extending a spur of the DART line or something, but buses? Of course the metro is going to do a better job of getting large volumes of people to the airport than buses.

He then followed that up with:
    - How do you know large numbers of people will want to get to the airport frmo the city centre?

Has it been posted online yet as I wouldn't mind seeing it. Did Demsey make any refernce to the Public Consulation Process on sustainable travel at all?
