Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

11,000 year old Giant Deer bone found on the shores of Pollaphuca reservoir

05-02-2015 12:37pm#1A leg bone from a Giant Deer has been found by National Monuments archaeologist, Christiaan Corlett, on the shores of Pollaphuca reservoir in west Wicklow.
Although as yet not officially dated, the find occurred in close association with a dated antler fragment and is understood to date to around 11,000 years BP.
Interestingly, the bone was in situ on the surface of a marl horizon, possibly beneath a peat deposit of up to 2m thickness. Peat (turf) deposits in this area are extremely rare, so it is conceivable that the living animal stumbled into what was a pool at that time, and drowned.
...and for those of you interested in Palaeolithic Ireland - no, there were no cut marks on the bone!
The bone is in the upper right portion of the photo, sitting on the peat.

I think most archaeologists would be thrilled to find cut marks on Red Deer bones dated to the Mesolithic!:)
Christiaan seems to spend quite some time on the shores of Poulaphouca ....am I right in saying he also found evidence of Neolithic settlement along the shores there too?0 -
