Im lookin for a healthy, tasty breakfast that isnt porridge. Preferably something that doesnt resemble horsefood in any way shape or form such as shredded wheat.
Also, what is everybodys fav cereal??

Jordans crunch with pecans. Looks like museli but is really more like junk food, which it seems you are looking for, lovely stuff.

Personally, I'm fond of Cheerios at the moment!

Otherwise, it's the usual Kelloggs Corn Flakes or Weetabix.

Weetabix when I was a lad with hot milk. Right now, just good ol corn flakes.

Has anybody come across the 'Oatabix' cereals that are forever being advertised on telly, coz they're not in any of the stores in my neck of the woods.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,657 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

Yup, I've had the little ones with sultanas and apple, I think. They taste just like Weetabix, really, and have the same texture. But I'm in Edinburgh, so that might not be much help.

I really like the Kellogg's Honeycrunch Muesli. It's just sweet enough to make you forget that you're eating Muesli, but still healthy!

I'm pretty sure alot of that range is quite bad for you. I was reading yet another survey in some magazine awhile ago about the various cereals and whats in them. It may not be the crunch one you mention but some Jordans cereal was almost top of the list in terms of sugar and other nasties.

Do you dislike porridge for taste or just preconceived notions? I used to refuse to eat porridge simply because it looked awful and being healthy and all, it has to be horrible, didn't it?

Once I started eating it, it's my favourite cereal now. That, or if not available, weetabix.

Yep the whole range is pretty bad. I was saying it is junk food. I eat porridge myself and love it, esp. with some maple syrup (tiny bit). Sugar puffs are almost 50% sugar, more than many sweets.
Most cereals, cereal bars, and "healthy bars" are just junk food. Smart advertisers know the majority of people are totally ignorant when it comes to reading nutrirional values. I had a mate who used to eat full packs of "go-ahead" biscuits, his answer "but the ad on the telly said they were healthy", as though he was eating a full head of lettuce or something:confused:

Porridge with chopped nuts and honey:)

Anyone know a good muesli without sultanas or raisins, can't stand the things but love a good muesli. Spending 5mins in the morning removing tortured grapes is very tedious!

I have moved back onto Weetos now. :)

    Corn flakes FTW.

Special K with different types of fruit, but fresh fruit that you have gotten yourself none red berries as they are gross! Another is muesli with yogurt, that's really good aswell, and healthy too.

Is there any way of making porridge without it being all stodgy and sitting in your belly like a rock when you finish a bowl? Cause I really like the taste but hate that feeling. I saw a chef on tv sieve it once to get rid of the starch, has anyone done that before? Any other suggestions for porridge recipes would be appreciated, now that I'm back on the poor student diet, porridge is definately a good start to the day and quite cheap too!

As a general rule: any Kellogs/Nestle cereal is full of sugar and/or processed carbs, including the 'healthy' ranges. Steer clear if you actually intended on eating something in morning.

Porridge + raisins + honey = delicious and nutrious.

    Don't have a favourite cereal but tend to go through phases of liking;
    • Corn flakes
    • Rice crispies
    • Ready brek
    • Weetabix
    • Shredded wheat
    • Frosties
    • Alpen
This week I be mainly eating corn flakes.

Also is it just me or does anyone else love the 'powdered' remains at the bottom of packets of corn flakes/rice crispies?

Crunch Nut Clusters. Almost like desert. In fact, I'd say you could probably eat it with ice cream.

if your looking for a healthy option that tastes nice (espec with a bit of fruit) weetoflakes (used to be called advantage) with a slice of banana is the one. Its really healthy and IMO the nicest cereal around.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I was once at a house party and the guy was American, we were looking in his presses for food in the early hours of the morning. Lo and behold, massive box of lucky charms. Given their untouchable reputation I immediately opened the box, and just poured in a carton of milk.

took one bite, bleugh, the cereal was definately not gone off or anything because my other friend thought they were amazing, me, I found them rather rank

either Crunchy Nut Cornflakes or Rice Crispies yum yum

Porridge with a scoop of muesli for me.... :)

If I'm not having porridge, Fruit 'n' Fibre or Sultana Bran are my favourites.

I started regressing to childhood recently and bought a packet of Start & Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, it seemed like a good idea but they are too sweet to eat in the mornings.

Chocolate Weetabix Minis or Honey and Nut Weetabix Minis. *drool*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Sainsbury own brand luxury muesli....about 30-35% nuts, 20% fruit and the rest oats/wheat/bran....probably full of salt and sugar but who gives a f*ck?
It tastes good...sick of all the healthy eating nazis who think salt and sugar are crystalised forms of arsenic or cyanide...

Jordan's maple pecan crunch of a weekend morning too.
Weetabix when I'm not so flush...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 984 ✭✭✭cozmik

I usually have kelkin muesli or kellogs all bran with chopped bananas

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,150 ✭✭✭LivingDeadGirl

If you're really looking for something healthy then I'd say a mixture of chopped fruits with yoghurt would be good.

My breakfast of choice would probably be Special K, original mind, I agree with whoever said the red berries one is disgusting!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭plonk

Wheetabix or cornflakes. But if you want healthy syou should never add sugar to your cereal as there is already quite alot of sugar in cereal.
Never had lucky charms so cant comment. (there the ones with the marshmallows ya?)

I love that Crunchy Nut stuff with the chocolate bits in it. I know it's not the most nutritious kick start to a day but we all have out treats

Crunchy Nut Feast with Chocolate Curls ......mmm so good...more like a dessert really, but hey!! you may as well have something to look forward to to make you get out of bed :D

Those kinda oat/grain cluster things with the strawberry pieces in them... Can't remember the name

Also love me some Just Right, mini fruit n nut weetabix, Nesquik... and Golden nuggets for my hangovers. I take soya milk in my cereal, makes them sweeter, and healthier.

We have tons of Rice Krispies in my house cos I've developed a rice krispie bun fad over halloween, make em every weekend with smarties n mint flavouring in them. I'm a big kid!

Wheatabix, Wheatabix and more Wheatabix!!!!! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 171 ✭✭JimmNeutron

Ive started to really like porridge lately but there is only one way to eat it. A handful of raisins and plenty of maple syrup followed by a nice banana and a glass of ice cold innocent smoothie....mmmmmm.
The only reason to get out of bed in the morning.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,657 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

    Are you me?

I have porridge too, but I found that maple syrup was too sweet with it. At the moment I'm having raisins, cinnamon and a sprinkling of brown sugar. It's also nice to stir berries into it.

There's a porridge bar over here, basically take-away porridge. They do loads of flavours, like cranachan (raspberries, roasted oats, cream and a raspberry coulis type thing), white chocolate and hazelnuts (yummy), whiskey and honey, marmalade... All sorts!

I have a glass of Mango & Passion Fruit Innocent smoothie with my breakfast too. Mmm, healthy!

Porridge, coco-pops, Special K or weetabix with honey.

Been eating a lot of porridge lately though, lovely on these cold mornings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I ate seven bowls of Cheerios yesterday morning. I was ravenous after a night out. Nothing like a massive 1,500 calorie intake of sugar and other crap to start the day.
