    Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I've been trying to find out which brands of sugar available in Ireland are cane sugar, rather than beet. I can't find any information about this. I know the specialist and brown sugars are cane, but I'm looking for a cheap supermarket white sugar. Does anyone know if any of the own brands e.g. lydl or Tescos own brand are cane?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I've moved this into the general Food & Drink forum because you're much more likely to get replies here.

Cheaper sugars will usually be made from beets as the manufacturing process is simpler & less costly than that for cane sugar.

I think your best bet would be Tate and Lyle they identify which of their lines are Cane and which are Beet in origin.
Cash and Carries would be the main place to buy sugar in quantities like 25kg bags which is a lot cheaper than buying individual 1kg bags.

Really? I don't usually shop in Dunnes or Tesco so I didn't know you can buy 25kg bags in those places.
    Good to know.

Why would you want a 25Kg bag of sugar unless you're a business? That's a heck of a lot of sugar!

If you cook and bake and other stuff, 25kgs doesn't actually last that long.
Its like salt in that it doesn't really deteriorate if stored dry.

Dunnes/Tesco stock the 3kg bag (it may be 5kg, not sure), I have never seen a 25kg bag there, you'd only get that in a wholesaler. Branded names will be cheaper in bulk from wholesale but the supermarket own brands are cheaper by the kg than buying in bulk if their brand is suitable, I don't know which are cane or beet.

Which cash & carries? and can anybody buy from them. I remember when I brewed beer I looked in musgraves and it was more expensive than 25 single branded suicra bags -let alone buying own brand.

Whenever I saw the 3/5kg bags in supermarkets they were more expensive per kilo too.

Dealz do sugar cheap, not sure if its cane.

Just curious - why does it have to be cane over beet? AFAIK, they're both mainly sucrose with a trace of other sugars.

Thanks, I was looking at tate and lyle but can't find them in Ireland except selling specialist (expensive) sugars; not just 2kb bags of white sugar. Do you know where they are sold?

    Thanks for your idea!

I'm making chutney and jam and cane is slightly better for this as doesn't produce the frothy gunk on the top :-)

Just happened to be in a Euro Giant shop this morning and they have bags of Tate & Lyle for €1, it is marked Cane Sugar.

Also in Lidl at the moment they have Tate and Lyle Fairtrade caster sugar which is also marked as being from cane.

It's a personal thing for me. I can't stand the smell of beet sugar.
