Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I would highly recommend it. It's one of the easiest languages for english natives to learn :D

It's also ripe pickings for comedic and insensitive over pronunciation!

    Learn Polish language.
According to the latest Census 2011 there are more people in Ireland speaking Polish than Irish.

I'm wondering, why still all official documents/letters/sign posts are in English and Irish, not English and Polish :D:D:D

Latin. I've never had an Italian, Spanish or Romanian lesson in my life yet I can pick up a newspaper in any of those languages and understand it no problem.

I learned Spanish, and I could pick up an Italian, Spanish, Romanian or Portuguese newspaper and understand it, no problem.

Plus, I was able to converse with loads of people who haven't been dead for 2,000 years!

The question is obviously about human languages. Have you all missed this point, or are you just being wilfully dense?

The OP clearly wants to meet foreign chicks, not sit up in his bedroom playing with a fcuking computer like ye lot!

Depends on what your goal is. If you are looking for a job without worrying about visa issues, then German would be your best bet. German is the most widely spoken language in the EU and the DACH region is doing very well with the lowest unemployment within the EU.

Draw axes and a scale on the menu, specify the coordinates of the item you want.

The most useful language I know is the one I speak the most, its the only one I know. But its useful when a foreigner doesn't understand me all you have to do is speak it louder while poking them in the chest. They get the message.

For me it's been Spanish. It's come in more handy than English for me in non English speaking countries. I'd be trying a really slow broken conversation in English getting nowhere and then I'd ask hablas español and a lot of the time they'd speak more Spanish than English.

Mmh, I speak 4 languages (well 3 and a half really, my Russian is a little rusty) and I think they were all useful at some stage. German is great to have, especially for work, and Spanish is handy if you like travelling etc.

Why do you want to learn another language? If it's for work, German or Chinese are very useful at the moment, if it's for your own entertainment, I recommend Spanish.

I'd love to learn Italian, Polish and Gaeilge properly at some stage. So many languages, so little time :)

You should learn the humour language.

Rosetta Stone is crap - don't waste your money! You can get all the language resources you need on the web for free. Get a book or two as well and you're sorted.

Pick a language of a country you'd like to visit or just enjoy the sound of. I'm learning Swedish which, while not terribly useful in an international sense, will be most helpful in any Scandinavian country I find myself in :D

Not sure how that will be helpful considering that 90% of the locals in each scandanavian country speak perfect English...

I'm learning Dutch. No reason other than I like the sound of it. It's important that whatever language a person chooses to learn, that they enjoy doing so. It's hard at first and easy to quit, so making it fun will get your through that tough period.

I always wondered about those people who learn ancient Greek or Egyptian and even Mayan. Imagine the difficulty and dedication it took to learn those. It's not like you can go a type of gealteach to practice these ancient languages, unless you had a time machine.

This! Rosetta stone is not worth the mental prices they charge for it. While it helps a little bit, I think it does not help enough. It doesnt even teach you the meanings of most words, leaving you to go figure it out by yourself (which is good in some ways). Anybody who actually pays for it is probably mad in the head.

Sorry about that OP... I tend to assume that everybody on the internet is male until proven otherwise... :p

No offence intended... but be it chicks or fellas, let's face it, if we're learning a language, we tend to consider the potential hook-ups!

I did French in college and had about half an hour to choose either Spanish or German as my minor language, and all the time in my 18-year-old head there was a voice going "Spanish girls or German girls, Spanish girls or German girls..." so I went for Spanish :D

No regrets of course, learning Spanish was one of the best things I ever did - indeed career wise it jumped me up by about 5k one time being able to speak it, but I was in Munich a few weeks back and realised that I shouldn't have been so hasty with my prejudices at that age! ;)

Honestly op, learn a language that you're genuinly interested in. I think if you just try learn any ould language without having an further interest in the country or language then you wont succeed very well. I think thats what secondary school compulsory french taught me. :pac:

Well im most interested in Italian (for some reason) but its not much use outside of italy. Spanish makes the most sense and on closer inspection Spanish and Italian are quite similar!

So Spanish it is I think...

You should choose what ever language you feel your most attracted to. Choosing one language that is more widely spoken over a language which you feel most drawn to would be a mistake as you will might lose interest when it gets tough and its not easy to learn another language so it will be tough.

If its purely for business however go with what is most useful in where you want to base yourself.

For pleasure go with what sounds the nicest to you and the culture that your most attracted to. Theres no point of learning what is most widely spoken if its not what you really wanted to learn the most. Learn first what you love then second what is more spoken, would be a lot easier ;)

    COBOL
People might be laughing but tbh COBOL is still used a lot even today (I think JCL is also used still).
Mostly by banks and large corps that doesn't want to upgrade, and why should they as long as it's working.
