    Hi all,

    I am definitly a newb at programming but i was just wondering how websites like http://www.restaurants.com/ are coded. Any help would be brilliant, Thanks in advance, Ciaran

    Ususally a site like that consists of:

    - Database: MSSQL or MySQL Database with all the information in them.
    - Frontend: ASP/PHP pages that open the database, look for the required information and displays it nicely to the end user.
    - Backend: More ASP/PHP pages (secure this time) that allow an administrator to update the database with new information and records.

    I'll just point out that ASP is almost (if not entirely) a legacy technology it has been replaced by ASP.Net which is based on the .Net framework.

    Hi Shoot,

    I would recomment downling Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition (free)
    and Microsoft Visual Web Developer (free)

    You'll find loads of video (free) tutorials for beginners on www.asp.net.

    Populate a test database and use visual web developer to create datasources etc and bind them to grids etc to look nice to the user. There are lots of wizards and is generally very easy and straight forward to get up and running.

    Ruby on rails is pretty simple to pick up.

    If you're really keen on making some sort of website for money you'd probably be better off finding some indian kids on the internet to develop it.
