Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey all,

I am looking at changing my car within the next 2 months. I am looking for a 2008 car (to get benefit of lower road tax) and have a budget of €14,000-€15,000. I would want a 1.9TDI engine.

I am currently thinking of getting a 2008 1.9TDI Seat Leon. Do you have any other suggestions that would match my criteria?

    Thanks in Advance.

TBH for not a lot more you'd have a new Leon 1.9tdi with some bargaining.

A lot of the 08 Leon diesels for sale at the moment are imports. Some are perfect but there's a bunch that are dogs. Helped a friend of mine change car lately and they were literally in pieces. I wouldn't discount the 1.4 tsi though. It's economical and a nicer drive.

Minimum spec you should look for is Stylance

    Did you read the OP.

How about a 09 octavia new shape. Should not be too far away from your budget.

Lower tax can be blinding. You'd pick up a really well speced 05/06 Audi/Merc/Beemer for that money. I would think the depreciation might even be less too.

OP here again. The reason for 2008 car is road tax saving. As i am looking for a 1.9TDI the annual tax charge for most 2008 models is €156 per year whereas any car before 2008 it will be €582 per year.
Over the 3-4 years that i would intend to keep the car that would be a saving of €1,278(3 years) and €1,704(4 years).

Have you looked at the VW Passat 1.9tdi, one of the guys got a 2006 (i think) one recently and its a very nice car.
average price for a 2008 on cbg is about 19k, but there are a few at about 15k it seems.

OP here again. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm living in the city at the moment so would prefer a hatchback as easier for parking etc.

Wouldn't the greater depression of an '08 model over an older car balance that out?

Are you only looking at VAG 1.9 engines or something? If you're going for a 08, then the engine size is irrelevant. That said, how about an Alfa 159 JTD?

Emissions on that aren't great - €447 per year. Possibly a bit big for the OP too.

    Suggestions:

    Audi A3 1.9Tdi
    Ford Focus 1.6Tdci
    Kia C'eed / Pro C'eed 1.6d
    Seat Leon
    Of course, the Octavia

You might pick up a 2008 A3 in the North for that kind of money.

    like this:

When you take in VRT on bringing it across it would be way out of my budget!

'Say' you got it for £12k cash, thats 13500euro. VRT is 2100. So 600 quid over budget.

    2009 Leon:

That is a big "Say" very unlikely to get them to drop price by that much!

I'd recommend trying these guys out.

    http://www.dreamcars.ie/

Give them your budget and type of car your after and they will do the rest.

They ship cars over from the UK.

Got a really nice high spec'd octavia from them last year.

Not sure if they are still as good value but worth a try and see what they can offer anyways.

This Audi A3 is £8999 + £91 administration fee = £9,090( €10,033) + €2168 vrt = €12,201. The mileage is 78k but it has a service history and it's a diesel so it's only a walk in the park really. Don't know if it's good value compared to buying one here as I'm not aware of what A3's are fetching here, but looks good value to me anyway. The buddy bought a BMW from car giant last year and never had a problem with it. You obviously have to factor in the price of the flight over and ferry back.

You could do better spec-wise. That's the lowest of the lot of them

bmw Diesel would be a preference but not at such a low engine size.... Audi to the rescue !

Probably not, as an 07 although cheaper now will be impossible to shift in about 3 years time when 08 cars are in everyones reach especially if the 08 gets into the 156 tax bracket.

    Nobody suggested buying a '07.
