Processor speed in laptop

    Friend getting a new laptop.Wants a good one.What processor speed for

    Internet
    Word processing
    Email
    Photoshop
    Quark Express DTP
    No games

    Also is the bus speed important? The one she has has a 1.6 GZH celeron with a 400mzh bus speed.

    The Celeron she has would have been fine for the first 3 items in your list until you hit photoshop and then thats where a celeron would let you down a bit.
    For photoediting, while not 100% necessary, its nice to have a beefy enough processor and a bit of extra ram to allow its to do the job a bit quicker.
    Most new laptops will come with 2GB RAM (if not then 1GB) and more than likely have a Core 2 Duo or Core Duo processor which should be more than acceptable for the uses you have listed.

    OK assuming a 2GB RAM Core 2 Duo what bus speed would be good. I think bus speed is expressed in mhz, think hers is a 400mhz bus speed. what would the above laptop need as a bus speed. Thanks

    A core 2 duo will have a bus speed of either 667mhz or 800mhz. Either will be fine and it's something you really shouldn't worry about.

    You're right, some have a 533mhz bus speed. Some of the desktop c2ds have a 1,066mhz or 1,333mhz bus speed.

    Why? The bus speed determines how fast the cpu can get information to and from the memory. A higher FSB will give better performance but unless you plan on doing a lot of photoshop using massive images then it won't really matter all that much.
