Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Have you tried it recently with the combat enhancement mod? I've not tried it, but it's supposed to be excellent (though i doubt it'll ever compare to Dark Souls).

i hated the enchancement even more. just couldn't wrap my head at all around how the combat was supposed to work with it installed.

Oh my god the combat is doing my head in in the first one. He either flattens an Enemy too easily or just stands there until he's dead if there's more than 3 of them.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Combat in the 1st was pretty awful. I remember breezing through the first area, and than getting crucified by the demon dog boss. Absolutely slaughtered me over and over again till i gave up (think i cheated actually).

Are you playing the enhanced edition? It makes it more balanced from what i remember.

You do need to use heavy attacks against big enemies, and fast attacks against fast enemies, and consider group attacks when there's a group of enemies. It's not hard when you get used to that.

I gave up on it. Watched the story and went straight to Witcher 2. Got to somewhere in Chapter 2 before combat just frustrated me to stopping

i just finished a replay of witcher 2.. i'd never actually played through iorveths story (having done roche first time around when it was released). got to chapter 3 and realised why it took me so long to replay it.. jesus that game took a serious nosedive in quality.

chaps 1 and 2 are excellent though, the crappy finale doesn't really ruin the game as 1 and 2 feel like enough. at some point before witcher 3 i'll have to do a runthrough of 1 and 2 to get a save to import... not sure if im looking forward to that or not

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I never actually played it after the released the Enhanced Edition. It was supposed to improve the 3rd act, but i guess it was still pretty poor. Definite drop in quality. Also never did an Iorveth's playthrough. You'd miss out on the best quest in the game though, resulting in a brilliant tattoo :P

    Plus...Odrin!! Odrin!!

I was stuck at a part in chapter 5, so was well used used of the combat mechanics, just found them really awful. If you were drastically outnumbered geralt would just stand there unable to react a lot of the time, generally spent most of the time, and the dodging was useless, even if you dodge you still take damage.

Just completed it there anyway, such a frustrating game but the storyline and characters just about make up for the combat parts which were a massive chore to get through imo.

Have witcher 2 sitting unplayed on my X-Box so will be on to that next I reckon.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

You can carry over your save if you're playing on the pc. Changes a few things in the 2nd iirc.

    New gameplay trailer from VGX.

If combat is fine-tuned, could be excellent.

Tis more than a bit shit, I've been looking forward to this since it was first announced. Thought it might have been released around August/September this year.

If there is one developer I trust - its CD Project Red. If they need time, IT MEANS THEY NEED FECKING TIME! They should take as long as they need, I dont mind to wait for Greatness. I dont want bioshock Infinite 2.0 Where to cool parts from trailers did not even made it in to game or were way under used.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

In an open letter, the Polish studio said the delay would help the game reach the quality "gamers expect from us".

I expected a broken buggy release followed by an enhanced edition a few months later :) How history can be rewritten in gamers' minds. I love their games but lets face it their reputation is not as smooth as the current group think seems to suggest. Glad they are taking the time though.

I understand that but it still is disappointing. It was one of the few games I was looking forward to this year.

The Kayran? It's easy, just cut its tentacles off, the rest of the fight is a QTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,268 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

Use the trap spell to trap its tentacles and then hack them off. Then run up the bridge on to its head. It is tough though. Took me so many attempts.

I don't recall either games being that broken or buggy on release, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.

I'm actually a little relieved to see the delay now.

I trusted CD Project Red before, but now I'm sure that the game they release will be worth the hype.

Too many studios sacrifice quality to deliver at a certain time, it's good to see someone doing the opposite.

Disappointed it's being delayed, but i trust CD Projekt to get it right. Plus, it gives me a chance to replay the 2nd game.

It is a shame about the delay, but if they are giving us areas twice the size of Skyrim it is worth the wait.
CD Projekt Red and Umbra Software held a presentation titled “Solving Visibility and Streaming in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Umbra 3“ at the Game Developers Conference, and it included a very interesting detail (that I happened to overlook when I first examined the original slides) as discovered by Reddit user fughp.

The slides mention the size of two of the areas included in the game: the city of Novigrad measures 8.5 x 8.5 km for a total size of 72,25 square km, while Skellige is 8 x 8 km, meaning 64 square km. Summed up, the two areas cover 136,25 square km, which convert to just north of 52 square miles.

By comparison, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s world has been calculated to measure 14.8 square miles. This means that the two areas named above are already over 3.5 times larger than the whole Skyrim map.

This is actually fairly interesting since back in June CD Projekt RED described The Witcher 3 as 20% larger than Bethesda’s open world game. We currently don’t know if that was just a preliminary estimate, or the Witcher‘s world just got bigger since then.

We reached out to CD Projekt RED requesting information to shed light on the issue, and we’ll keep you updated if we receive any relevant answer. In the meanwhile one thing is for sure: the world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is pretty damn big.

Worth playing before this comes out, you can carry the saves over like in mass effect/dragon age. Usually dirt cheap in the steam sales too.

She ends up with you at the end whether you rescue her or not, but if you choose to rescue her the mages are grand where as if you don't rescue her yourself everyone turns on the mages and it's a huge massacre, but then the assassin guy has rescued triss when you meet him at the end anyway. Think both of those things happen the same way whether it's Iorveth's path or the other guy. I presume the one they talk about returning in the trailer wasn't Triss but Yennefer?

Charles Dance. Nice. And fair play to gog with the pre-order deal. Discount if you own W1 or W2, discount if you pay in euro because we always get done against the dollar. I don't do pre-orders but in this case I might simply because they deserve it. Big publishers should take notice.
