Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi my daughter has aspergers syndrome and was just refused disability allowance
she is 16 now and not like other girls of her age because of AS. However, she was just refused disability allowance on the grounds that his condition wouldn't last for longer than a year.In his application her doctor backed it up with a letter telling of my daughters problems. I haven't the paperwork to hand so cannot say the exact words, but it was one of those general letters refusing it.she was in receipt of D O M allowance until she was 16 I'm disappointed because I can't see her going to college or working for a very long time yet.she was in receipt of Dom allowance up till she was 16 they sated that it stops at 16 so we applied for disability i don't understand when you are 16 it mean you are cured of ASD? We shall appeal, is it to do with the lack of money? And do appeals for AS go through eventually or is it a waste of time.can people with aspergers clam disability allowance? Thanks for anyone who might know.

At her age she is eligible for disability allowance

For everything in Ireland there is a lobby group

Give this crowd a call, they will have seen similar situations before

You have 21 days to Appeal. Does your daughter attend a specialist? if so you need to get a really strong letter from him/her stating that the Aspergers is ongoing. If he/she could include a list of your daughters daily medication , then that is helpful. Write a letter yourself describing daily life with your daughter, asking for the decision to be reconsidered. Dont send it to the Appeals office, but back to Longford

    This.

That's insane they think her aspergers will be gone in a year, they truly have a fantastic misunderstanding of what aspergers is.

There is a long waiting time for the appeals.
You should be prepared for at least a year.

Keep on appealing and ringing up about the claim. Your dautgher is 100% entitled to disability and a bus pass.

What? Wouldn't last longer than a year? They realise it's Aspergers she has and not a mobile phone contract right?

If your daughter has a diagnosis of Aspergers from a psychologist then she is 100 % entitled to a disability allowance payment. My brother is 23 and has been in receipt of this payment, along with a free travel pass since he was 17, for the same condition.

It is a complete disgrace that someone employed by a government department working in the area of disability is so uneducated to this and other conditions that they would label it a 'temporary illness'.

Aside from your entitlements, if your daughter is self-harming, you should definitely try to get her some help sooner rather than later. In my experience of Aspergers (both personal and professional - I have taught many students on the autistic spectrum), sometimes they can get so frustrated that they have difficulty finding an outlet. My brother also self-harmed for a while but has now found other ways to release his frustrations.

Also, just to let you know it does get easier - my brother has come along in leaps and bounds, especially in the last three years. He is almost unrecognisable to the person he was as a teenager.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how long the appeals process takes, or why they would make you jump through hoops for something you are absolutely entitled to. Could you approach a TD, or someone who could lobby on your behalf?

Best of luck with your appeal, and I really hope you and your daughter receive everything you are entitled to.

A lot of these general letters list quite a few different conditions for which a claim can be disallowed. However, there is normally one ticked.
Is it definitely because of it being a temporary illness?
You need to double check this to ensure you are appealing the correct thing.

thank you LilMsss; my Daugherty has beaning seeing a specialist who deals which As for the last 3 weeks we hope to see some improvement and we are going to see our local TD and see what they can do.

CEE JAY this is what the refusal letter there are no ticks on it striate to the point.
A]the person must be suffering from an injury disease congenital deformital or physical or mental illness or defect which has continued or may reasonable be expected to continue for the period of at least a year
B]as a result of the condition the person is substantially restricted undertaking work which would otherwise be suitable having regard to the persons age experience and qualifications

Hi OP, I had to appeal a decision last year, the appeal took five months for the decision to come through (June 2010, awarded in Nov 2010). I don't know if it takes any longer now.

I don't understand this payment, What expenses does a 16 year old child with Aspergers have that another child of the same age does not?
