Get the Tosh and upgrade the memory yourself, 8 GB kit (2x4) costs €35.

    Thanks Torqay

Do you have any views on this in terms of value for money. Is there better out there for that money or would increasing my budget to €1,000 make a big difference in quality?

    Appreciate any views

The Tosh is pretty good value. Very powerful processor and the memory can be upgraded up to 16 GB (~ $75), these are the most important components for image and video processing. The graphics card should suffice (you're not playing games?). A faster hard drive (SSD or 7.200 rpm HDD) would help matters too. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a full HD display. Now that can be remedied with an external monitor but that defies the purpose of a desktop replacement.

I just had a quick look at PC Specialist, the Optimus IV might be an interesting alternative.

    17.3" (1920x1080)
    Core i7 3610QM
    8 GB RAM
    750 MB HDD (7.200 rpm)
    GTX 660M (2GB GDDR5)

Win7 HP x64 (incl. OS installation disk)
    3 yrs warranty

    £800 (€996)

Advantage: full HD display, much faster graphics, nearly everything can be upgraded later, it comes with a 2nd HDD bay (if you want to add a SSD) and 3 memory slots (24 GB RAM max).
