Google maps, pointer direction?

When I'm in Google maps and I press to show where I am, there is a little blue arrow that I assume should point in the direction I'm facing. But it does not its always off by a good bit, about 90 degrees sometimes more. How can I get it to point where I am pointing or am I using it wrong?

Does the little blue arrow point north? seems to stay pointing north when I do a twirl

From here

You might be surprised that some android phones don't have a compass sensor.

Go back to old version of maps. New maps is bloody abysmal.
