The shareholders won't prefer everything on the network

If the WWE weren't on TV and were basically only showing their A shows on a glorified website behind a paywall they would see their exposure limited and would likely see fewer ticketsbsold, less merch sold, less money for licenses etc. etc. WWE need mainstream TV badly. Maybe in 20 years everything will be exclusively on the Network when they have 10million+ subscribers.

Would so much more prefer it if they pulled it and just stuck it all on the Network, maybe next time round...

No chance. How would they attract new fans? How would they bring back old ones? How would they promote their big monthly shows, the main selling point of the network?

The only possibility is if the network was so successful that they no longer needed the rights fees and agreed a cut-price non-exclusive deal where they could show the weekly shows on both TV and the network. Even then it's unlikely they would keep such a good TV slot in the US especially if the network versions didn't have ads, as the ratings would be way down.

Anyway the network isn't going to be that successful anytime soon.

If my calculations are correct then the new TV rights in the states alone will probably account for over twice of all the network revenue they would get at current subscriber levels.

Raw is now their main revenue stream.

UPDATE on Daniel Bryan from the WWE website
WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan underwent successful surgery to repair a lingering neck injury this morning, WWE.com has learned.

After being diagnosed with the nerve issue in his neck by WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann, Bryan underwent a procedure known as a cervical foraminotomy to decompress the nerve root. The surgery was performed by world-renowned neurosurgeon and sports medicine expert Dr. Joseph Maroon. WWE.com was not able to get an official timetable for Daniel Bryan's return, but can confirm that the WWE World Heavyweight Champion is out of surgery and doing well, with strength already returning to his hands.

Also pulled this from the Cena Cannot Wrestle Facebook page, some details of the procedure that Daniel Bryan had done.
During that procedure, surgeons go in through the back of the neck and shave the inside edges of joints in the neck and spine that are causing compression in order to prevent the eventual collapse of a spinal disc. Usual recovery from this procedure for heavy physical activity is 2-3 months.

    Or Summerslam

I wonder the WWE put the World Title on Kane until Summerslam

I thought this was all a work considering everything else that has happened to Bryan. If it is they are going incredibly far with it.

They wouldn't yank him from the European tour

So the TV rights fee increase was somewhere between $42 million to $55 million rather than the $100 or $200 million hoped by WWE and investors.

Yes, to state the bleeding obvious, well done. I was just stating my personal preference, of course it will be years and probably never before WWE put all of their eggs into one basket.

Glad to see Bryan's surgery went well and that it was just a nerve root decompression, assuming they went in anterio-laterally it's surprisingly non-invasive.

I would also prefer if RAW and Smackdown! were live on the Network since I'm paying for it and would like all first run programming live.

Only Vince McMahon's ego could ensure that a huge increase in $ is seen as such a negative.

I think if they'd not chirped so much about it and it just came out one day that they were now earning an extra $50 million without having to produce an extra minute of TV programming, it would be perceived as a win. Not now.

Still, in spite of that, I think it's good news for the company. Not the shareholders though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭takamichinoku

$100 million didn't seem that unrealistic; it's basically a long term guarantee of high ratings for whichever channel has it and that should be worth something right now when they've got to contend with netflix, etc. The fact they couldn't come close just shows how utterly worthless the wrestling viewing audience must be to advertisers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,061 ✭✭✭leggo

I think it was just posturing on Vince's part, trying to provoke a knee-jerk crazy money offer from NBCU. They didn't blink. The share price dropping isn't a huge deal, it's a transitional phase for the company so jumps and drops are to be expected while they test the market and find their way.

AMC have greenlit a Billy Corgan wrestling project:
Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project (eight episodes, 60 Minutes) As the leader of The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan helped revolutionize the indie music scene with his innovative brand of alternative rock. Now, The Pumpkins frontman brings his creative genius to the world of professional wrestling in this compelling docu-series that pulls back the curtain in a way pro-wrestling fans have never seen. The series follows Corgan in his latest undertaking as creative director of Resistance Pro, a Chicago-based wrestling league. Corgan will take us behind the scenes of this fascinating world, from creating storylines to choreographing fights to managing intense post-match locker room arguments, and will reveal that the most dramatic stories often take place outside of the ring.

Vince still has that promotional instinct even when it comes to shareholders. Raise expectations to a point where it can't be met. Both with the network and TV rights. Much better to underestimate and then over-achieve.

Wouldn't be surprised to see legal action from those who bought shares when they were close to $30 a month ago.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,089 ✭✭✭✭rovert

I know two people who quit working for Corgan's Indy fed. Wasn't that he was bad guy just his ideas were so bad and counter productive.

You're not wrong, but they wouldn't have a case, his counter would be that he was being genuinely optimistic about his product's prospects and then he'd have oodles of info on Netflix popularity and other sports rights fees to back him up.

In truth their projections on subscribers are realistic in the long-term and the rights' projection was completely justified, it's just that WWE or wrestling in general are never going to get the respect they deserve by the mainstream. Ultimately the likes of CBS and ESPN who have NFL and NBA rights aren't going to bid silly money for WWE so it won't drive the price up like those sports can.

Any "bizarre" reaction from the London crowd will simply be edited out by the airing of the show. No coincidence it's the taped show he's debuting on...

Otherwise, the crowd would simply be singing "He's got the whole world..." all through the match.

Maybe come out while BNB is talking. Nothing can overcome bad news like Bolieving in yourself. That should get him a reaction since Wade will be over with the home crowd

Bo did eliminate Barrett from the Royal Rumble in 2013. Maybe it was all because he Bolieved in himself.

Bo is truly one of the worst professional wrestlers I've ever seen. He's ok in the ring but his promo delivery and general charisma are gash. His face is truly one of the most annoying around too. Absolute go away heat.

Any novelty will wear off after a week or two. Maybe he can form a team with Adam Rose and feud with the early 90s throwback The Ascension for the tag titles.

    .

Haha completely agree. Very annoying head..

I thought Miz was the least tough looking pro wrestler I'd ever seen til this guy arrived. Makes Miz look like Stone Cold.

He thinks he is a babyface but he is actually a heel is best way to describe his gimmick.

It does demand an explanation of the backstory. Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) was renamed NXT two years ago or so. Bo was super over pushed in FCW and fans began turning on Bo with "No more Bo" chants quickly after FCW became NXT.

Like mxph3 said he prefers to here booing as cheers as in "Bo"s and not "Boo"s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,478 ✭✭✭✭gnfnrhead

Thought they would have learned from the Emma disaster that introducing people with a gimmick established on another show is a bad idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,309 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Or to put it another way: He is Cena, the fans react to him as if he's Cena, but he thinks they're reacting to him the same way the WWE thinks the fans react to Cena.

Reminds me of Kurt Angle, one of my favourite ever gimmicks. Could be good if he has the talent to pull it off.

Anything that requires that much explanation will definitely get over!

It sounds like something that happened organically, an attempt to recreate the same thing again is unlikely to work.

Another sign ROH is gaining on TNA domestically:
The annual pro wrestling event presented at The Brooklyn Cyclones' MCU Field in NY, which has been promoted by TNA for years, will be presented by Ring of Honor this summer.

ROH will debut at the Stadium on Saturday 8/16.

Was TNA's biggest US house show every year to my memory.

It's Photoshop, like, for me you should be able to find someone within your circle that can do that moderately well (or at least a fan who'll do it as a nixer for $50 and free tickets). It's kinda become a 21st century life skill at this stage. I've seen ICW's stuff before and agree it's good, I think it's PCW (or another English indie) that do decent stuff like that too. Those kinda skills are cheap these days and just require a bit of imagination and passion for your product, it's a bit unforgivable IMO.

Anyway, apologies for dragging us off-topic.
