    Hiya,

On a max 5k budget and as the car market has changed since this time last year any recommendations.

Would really prefer a diesel car which reduces the search criteria. Low mileage as well 65k ish. Any recommendations?

I was thinking of avensis, bmw 3 series ( if I can get one ), mazda 6.

I want the car to be cheap to run with good mpg

Get cruise control in that mofo if it doesnt.

Good purchase. It seems to be well maintained and thats great for a diesel VW.
Please keep good care of it :p

My cruise control comment seems ever so out of place here :p

    To the OP.
    VW:
TDI 1998 to 2000 = Great engine, but not as quick. 90hp and 110hp
TDI from 2000 to end of budget = Better engine if well maintained, which is hard to find. Usually any other HP then above.
The two engines do overlap a bit year wise.

    FORD:
    TDDI = no
TDCI = Yes, but maybe budget cant get that far.

My research said VW or Ford were the best.

    Thanks bbk.

Would you put the vw above the toyota's? Which VW just the passat?

Is the VW and Ford better than the toyota and/or mazda?

Im going with what is realistically a fairly limited budget but want the best of all worlds. Nicest lookin plus best mpg etc. etc.

    Thanks,
    Ronan

Go for the avensis. Totally reliable (especially the earlier ones), north of 50 mpg is possible and will last forever.

VW arent as reliable as they are made out.

How about a seat toledo? they are a great car. Ive had two, both with the 1.9tdi engine. It has the same running gear as the vw's and audi's for a fraction of the cost.

What type of mileage are you doing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,908 ✭✭✭GTE

The Toyota would probably be very good also.
Seat would be one to check out too, I always forget them. And Skoda.
    Same engines across them all.

would be doing about 25-30k miles per year.

If you are doing that kind of mileage then comfort should be as important as reliability and economy.

I would be looking at something like this:
