Looking into a 1.6 Levin. But are they all driven to sheet rustboxes or is it luck of the draw? Dont want to be wasting money.

Do you know what to look for or how to tell the difference?

I'd genuinely suggest you bring someone along who knows what they are looking at. It's all well and good to say what to look for but an experienced eye on a specialist car would be far better.

this would be crucial in this instance.

has to be said, most are driven to death at this stage. that said, there are still some gems around. i wouldn't expect to get one needing no work for under €2k. i wouldn't go near one for around €1k unless you know exactly what you are looking for and are financially prepared for trouble.

i don't mean to be the barstooler here, but if you buy one with a worn superstrut be prepared for big bills. they are seemingly (proably due to "irish" maintenance) starting to become fond of spinning bottom ends now too which would equate to some big bills also.

have you a link to a particular car?

Let me reverse it, post an ad you're interested in and I'll look at it (I'm not an expert). I might spot something obvious or someone more knowledgeable may spot something else.

I can say limited things (a few bits aren't original), that car needs to be checked out on a ramp by a competent mechanic or someone who knows what they are looking at. Stored since 2012 sounds more like parked off the road as I was in Oz for 2 years, I'd prefer to see "Just clean for the first time since 2012".

Too much to go wrong and risk without a close up viewing. I'd love one though. Its a filthy pleasure of mine but too many crashed examples were brought in and their histories lost on the ship from japan by dodgy sellers. It needs to be professionally checked out.

Killorglin isn't far from where I live, only 40 minutes or so. They are a beautiful car. I dunno what the attraction is but it has me hooked.

I'm the same but I don't like the image that goes with them. For reasons beyond comprehension I won't have one for now :(

But find a spanner who will check it for you and go from there.

far from the worst one i've seen. it does look in good condition.

i'm sure it doesn't need pointing out that it's missing its spoiler. aside from that though it looks good.

still has its original airbox which is pretty ****ing exceptional at this stage. low km's and its a superstrut model that has just passed the NCT, so happy days there. i'd be checking has someone changed it to macpherson at some point though, as lots have at this stage.

max power era alloys would actually give me the confidence to believe that this car was in storage for a few years and has just came out (or off of the driveway as a pointed out)... maybe it hasn't had too many owners or been messed with too much since.

on the downside, panel gaps around the drivers side headlight and wing look pretty shocking.

is that a defi or gauge link unit or a turbo timer by the drivers knee on the dashboard?

Suspension seems to go gammy on a lot of them. Superstrut is very fragile! Cost me a few hundred to put right, also gear box can be dodgy! lovely car tho,so fast for a 1.6

That's a godawful example for 3k. That sorta money should have you at the top end of Levins, poxy Wolfrace wheels and mad panel gaps tells me that's your typical ragged one.

And god they look awful without spoilers.

Had one myself. Few things to look out for.
6 speed box are known to grind so if you are going to see one make sure the car is cold when first starting it so you can see are any synchros are crunching/grinding in cold and hot.l obviously while driving.
Superstruts squeak a lot when it is going/gone. So when you're driving listen out for squeaks they're quite loud.
They are also quite costly to replace but worth it when cornering.
Check if the engine is burning oil and check the level as most lads never put oil in them and the bottom end goes in them.

That's the main things to look out for. Mine was a fantastic car when I had it. Great pull through the gears and just great fun to drive. Miss my one a lot.

    hope this helps!
