Why is my mouse pad on laptop tempermental?

My mouse pad on my laptop doesn't work when the laptop is sitting on the table/counter but it will work if it is sitting on my knee or if it is on it's side. This happened overnight. Anyone have any ideas of what's wrong with it and how to fix it?
