Advice on second-hand family automatic car

Hi Folks,

I was hoping I could get some advice here on the best options for a second-hand family car. Key requirements are:

Budget - up to 13k
Milage - 10k per year. Mostly city + monthly trip down the country
Transmission - automatic. My left knee is telling me to buy one
Family - 13 month old at the moment another to follow at some stage. My bike also comes on trips from time to time.
Body - not precious on this provided there is boot space to put everything in.
Trade in - yes, 00 Accent with 77k miles on the clock

I test drove a Peugeot 3008 (2011) however was disappointed with the driving exp due to the automatic. Also couldn't believe it wasn't ISO compatible!

I'm looking online at a number of models Avensus, Insignia, Mondeo, Quashquai etc. Given that it'll prob be 2009/2011 for this price range it can be difficult to know the road tax as it seems to change between models.

Any advice would be much appreciated on this. I'm not precious what model it is provided it fits the requirements.

First off I'd take the Hyundai out of the equation when buying the new car. A 15 year old Accent is worth nothing to a dealer as it's too old for them to sell on their forecourt. You are better off trying to sell it privately and negotiate a better discount off the price of the newer car.

With your low mileage I'd tend to stick with petrol. Skoda Octavia estate is worth a look at. Choice is limited but despite it being only 1.2 litre it has 105bhp which should suit your needs and the boot is fairly large for the class. DSG box on them is very nice too.

I'll second a Prius, very safe and ultra reliable, the accent would be better sold off done deal.

As above, sell the Accent privately. You might get €100 from a dealer for it. As above I too would look out for an Octavia DSG estate.

Octavia is a good call, but... friend of mine has the small cc petrol version and it's just not adequate. It's s big car, the estate is even bigger. 1.2 with 100 bhp is not going to be fun in that.
