Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi guys iam back for a bit of advice hope you guys can help.I have a website that iam currently changing i.e text and header tags.

I have done the bits on the site that i have access to and i was getting the web designer to add the rest.

Problem is the price to get it done is way to dear for me (500) and i am half thinging of doing some tutorials about html and doing it myself.

My question is really would i be able to do this myself (i have no real knowledge of html and stuff)

Its done in dreamveaver they have told me and have given me all the codes i need to do this.

    all advice appreciated.

It's really hard to tell how easy you'll find this. It depends on the changes you want to make.

iam a bit confused now because ive just had the chance to have a proper look at what codes and stuff i was given, ive been told the site was done in dreamweaver and she gave me codes for this and ftp.

Does this now mean that if i am going to attempt this myself that i need to buy dreamweaver or is there somewhere i can download it for free??

Am I correct in saying that you were quoted €500 to change the content of your website? Thats crazy! Is it just a html website that you need changed? Notepad++ is your friend :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,257 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Dreamtime, you might be able to download an evaluation version which will do you for the time being.

If I remember correctly, the OP was given a CMS, but it didn't offer control over all the elements that s/he wanted.

yes thats correct eoin i was given access to a cms to edit basic text.but i am adding text to pages that hasent got any text Products and top of special deals page etc and also changing titles aswell hence no access through cms.

Somebody asked was i quoted 500 euro, Yes i was quoted 50 euro an hour and was told it would take 10 hours to do so i asked for the codes to get access but now ive found out i have to download dreamweaver and access through passwords i was given.

I now need to find an alternative to dreamweaver or dreamweaver itself

If i use notepad how do i transfer that to the site??

I think that Notepad (or the excellent Notepad++) is an alternative to Dreamweaver for what you want to do i.e. change text but not the design or layout.

Neither Notepad or Notepad++ will transfer files to or from the site. You could use a FTP program (I use WinSCP) or, if you get access to your hosting control panel, you could download the files via that.

Having said all that, I am concerned that you might break something if you do start editing files. Be very careful.

    hi daymobrew

they gave me codes for ftp but it doesent say what one it is or how i access it.also gave me a link to something that is parrellels, but just shows hosting info.

If i do it myself I am planning to read up on tutorials and do a backup before i do anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,257 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Your FTP address is most likely ftp://ftp.dreamtimebouncycastles.com (I just pinged it and it works).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

I code in notepad++ for small sites but if you are going to be doing alot of page updating or template changes it is alot easier to use dreamweaver.

Also if they created the site in dreamweaver then i am pretty sure there are seperate template files that they should have given you unless they uploaded the files to your webserver.

If you have the FTP server name/username/ and password then you can FTP in and download all the files you need to update it.

If it is a basic HTML site that is... if they have coded it in PHP then thats a totally different story. It is easy enough to read up a few tutorials on how to update it... definetely if its going to save you 500 quid... and you will be able to update it in the future.

ok so that worked for me eoin thanks does that mean i can edit the site from there ??

The best thing to do would be to download the site to your local computer and edit it from there - then upload the files when you update them.
another feature of dreamweaver is that there is a built in ftp client so you can automatically make it upload the new version.

Might be an idea to look into your control panel on your website and see if there is a backup facility so you can download everything in one.

    Hi samhail

the site was done in dreamweaver originally but i dont have dreamweaver can i download the free version and log in there with the details i was given??

i know nothing yet about html so iam trying to keep things simple for myself i will be updating pages that content wont change(static) text on top of products etc so most of it will not change.

i am also changing titles to h1 headers and so on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

you dont need dreamweaver to get access to your site.

as daymobrew suggested you need to download an FTP program to access your FTP where you can download the website files to your computer. i use one called FileZilla. its good and free.

there are two ways you can go.
    1) Dreamweaver: you can download a trial copy from http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/ and edit your pages in a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editor (alot like word in that you dont see all the code that makes text go bold or italics etc). thats alot easier to do, and there is a code view in dreamweaver (well there was a few versions ago when i used it) so you can see the HTML code updating as you change the text. That might be a good way to start off learning HTML as you are actually doing something, and can see how you are doing.

    2) learn HTML/PHP. This is the quick and dirty way to update websites. very handy when you are more experienced or know your way around web pages.

If you do go for option 1... at the end of the 30 days trial (if it is 30 days) you will either have to pay out the US$399 to buy a license or switch back to HTML (or maybe another WYSIWYG editor)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Dreamtime

ok so maybe dreamweaver might suit me best(if iam going to even attempt this myself) when i log into ftp its just a screen with dates, times and diff named links which brings me to more pages the same with links.how would i download the things i do in dreamweaver into this or is there something in the free dreamweaver that will do this.

The changes that i will be making will be mostly static so once its done i wont have to touch it again.

Dont forget to take a backup :)

im not sure of how your server is setup.
but usually when you FTP into your account, on the right hand side usually( files on the left are on your machine, and files on the right are on the remote machine) you should see maybe "www", "public_html", or the name of your domain, "dreamtimebouncycastles.com" ?
in there you should see all the files that are available on your web server.
They are the ones you are interested in.

if your website is dreamtimebouncycastles.ie then you should see a few files in your root directory (that you found above), index.html, or index.php or index... something.
you will see a folder for products, special_deals, booking_request, and contact us, and a few other.
(all gotten from looking at your website)

    once you find them.
you need to select them all and drag them over to your computer - somewhere logical. i have a web folder under My Documents, and all the sites i edit there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,257 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Dreamtime - be very careful editing your site. Your web design company would be well within their rights to not stand over any changes you make that could cause problems.

I would download an evaluation copy of dreamweaver and see if you can try updating a copy of your site on your machine first, before you go anywhere near your live site. The €500 you're saving now by not using a pro, could well turn out to be a costly saving if you're not careful with your site.

    Backup, backup and backup again.

I've probably taken this out of context, but learning HTML is the way to update websites, not the quick and dirty way!

You're starting to mess up your site badly, you're using html elements to format your document's structure and you're adding inline styles - have a look at your source code, it's a mess:

compared to loading the site up in dreamweaver and doing expansion through there, is where i was coming from with the quick and dirty

but i agree learning HTML is a necessity for updating websites.

You said in your first post you'd edited the site.

    Who added the:

    Birthday Parties Christenings Communions

    Confirmations Corporate functions Community events

    Fun Days

    section in the centre?

The code I posted above is behind that. It's been added since March 7th ( http://66.102.9.132/search?q=cache:vzR_7czFfaoJ:www.dreamtimebouncycastles.com/+http://www.dreamtimebouncycastles.ie/&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ie&client=firefox-a )

And I said you're starting to mess up your site badly.

As lostprophetsie said, that's probably the HTML generated by whatever WYSIWYG is installed in the CMS.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Dreamtime

yes eoin i think you have said it i have added that through the cms as plain text so why does it come up as cormee has said ?

Probably. I never said it was being caused by and specific piece of software, I said it needs to be edited by someone who knows what they are doing. Using inline styles and &nbsp to format a document is not the right way to go about things.

    Dreamtime wrote: »

Because you're laying out that centre text incorrectly, it needs to be done using an unordered list (you're using the space bar to format it) and your styles need to be imported from a separate style sheet (you're currently creating new styles and hard-coding them into the actual page), the CMS isn't really at fault here it's only doing what it's being told.

If it was done correctly it would look like:

    <ul>
    <li>Birthday </li>
    <li>Parties</li>
    <li>Christenings</li>
    <li>Communions</li>
    <li>Confirmations</li>
    <li>Corporate functions</li>
    <li>Community events </li>
    <li>Fun Days</li>
    </ul>

instead of what I posted earlier.

ok so are you saying that by me adding txt through the cms that it is messing up the codes on the site if so why is this

    Dreamtime wrote: »

is the HTML code for a non breaking space. This is needed because HTML will not show multiple spaces between words. For example:
If your HTML has the following:
    "This gap"

It will appear as "This Gap" in your browser

However, if you pad out the spaces like this: "This      gap", the spaces will appear as expected.

Unfortunately, this is very messy markup and is to be avoided.

The items you are displaying should really be in an unordered list like this, with CSS used to lay it out properly.
    [HTML]<ul>
    <li>Item 1</li>
    <li>Item 2</li>
    <li>Item 3</li>
    <li>Item 4</li>
    <li>Item 5</li>
    <li>Item 6</li>
    </ul>[/HTML]

Unfortunately, you need a decent knowledge of HTML and CSS to get the hang of this. I don't know if any WYSIWYG editors will help you too much with this.

    Edit - beaten to it...

:D - your &nbsp explanation was better in fairness.

@dreamtime - I see you changed it to a ul - well done - the code is much cleaner now.

Now get rid of your inline styles - go to your html view in your cms and remove all the

    <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> <span style="font-size: medium;"> type code between your <p></p> tags

ideally you should not have any style code between your <p>'s. Also use <strong> instead of <b>, also never use underline <u></u>.

Err on the side of caution when you use a CMS, it gives you the ability to make too many changes and some users will get carried away with the end-result of their page having the dreaded ransom-note look.

hi ive redone the code issue but doesent look right on the page is there a way using the ordered list to span them accross the page?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,257 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Dreamtime - you should not be using your live site to test this stuff out. Do your testing locally, and upload it when you're happy it works.

The CSS will be something like

    li
    {
    display: inline-block;
    width: 150px;
    }

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Dreamtime

    Hi eoin

problem is that i dont know where else to test it and how and also how to upload it so iam stuck doing it the only way i know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,257 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

Did you try to install an evaluation version of Dreamweaver to see if you can run the site on your own PC first? There's a good chance that you're going to spend a lot of your time to save €500 and end up needing professional help to fix the site anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 912 ✭✭✭chakotha

There is a neat FTP plugin for Notepad++ so you can edit live pages and clicking save or CTRL+S will upload the new version.

    FTP Synchronize

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,257 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

That is handy, but in this case, I think the last thing the OP wants to be doing is real time updates of his live site.

Thanks guys for all the help, I have decided to have somebody do it for me for under half the quote i got.So happy with that.I am doing some tutorials at the moment about html and also css finding it fairly ok so far.

Will be quite handy to know for future, I am using nopepad++ as somebody suggested its very good and am just using a file saved as .html to mess around with.

While iam here somebody might help me out with the img tag, I have the code but when i load it to the page it comes up blank with a red x in the corner?

Ive read up on it and it seems i have to save the image to the same directory as where iam loading the content. Is this correct if so how do i do that and if not how do i do it.

    Thanks again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

if you use <img src="name_of_image.jpg"> the name_of_image.jpg file needs to be in the same folder as your image.

you can display any image if its on the internet.
so you can use the URL for the src
<img src="http://www.dreamtimebouncycastles.ie/img/logo.png"&gt; for example will display the logo on your site.

You have to upload those images to your web site - this is where FTP comes in, or you can probably upload them via a File Manager in your hosting Control Panel.

I recommend putting them in the 'img' directory like your other images, for consistency.
